An Investigation Of The Ability To Predict The Frequency Of Occurrence Of Words Between Normal And Articulatory Defective College-Age Individuals, William Joseph Divers Iii Jan 1973

An Investigation Of The Ability To Predict The Frequency Of Occurrence Of Words Between Normal And Articulatory Defective College-Age Individuals, William Joseph Divers Iii

All Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to see if normal speakers and misarticulators differentially predict the frequency of occurrence of 80 words containing one or more of the five most frequently misarticulated speech sounds. The 80 words were selected from a study by Ausherman and Black. The subjects were 20 college-age individuals, ten with normal articulation and ten with articulation disorders. There were five males and females in each group.

All subjects predicted the frequency of occurrence of 80 words on the basis of an eight-point scale. Error scores were computed, used as a criterion measure, and statistically analyzed and …

The Residual Effects Of Long-Term Amphetamine Intoxication On Avoidance Learning And Retention In Rats, Larry Paul Liberty Jan 1973

The Residual Effects Of Long-Term Amphetamine Intoxication On Avoidance Learning And Retention In Rats, Larry Paul Liberty

All Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of chronic long-term amphetamine intoxication on active avoidance learning and retention in rats. The two experiments in the study were designed to investigate whether the effects noted during acute administration of the drug would be present at intervals of 2, 8 and 14 days after cessation of a chronic drug treatment. Experiment 1 indicated that rats trained 40 minutes after injection of the drug acquired the active avoidance task at a significantly faster rate than rats injected with saline, but their retention levels were the same. The results of Experiment …

An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Accented Words In The Spontaneous Speech Of Stutterers And The Frequency Of Stuttering Occurrence, Cherie Richardson Jan 1973

An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Accented Words In The Spontaneous Speech Of Stutterers And The Frequency Of Stuttering Occurrence, Cherie Richardson

All Master's Theses

This study explored the influence of word accent upon the precipitation of audible stutterings in the spontaneous speech of five adult male stutterers. The results indicated that three of the subjects stuttered with significant frequency upon accented words and two of the subjects evidenced a definite tendency to stutter on accented words. It was proposed that accented words may be a locus of stuttering in sentences and phrases of spontaneous speech in addition and perhaps relative to the four loci postulated by earlier research.

A Compatibility Study Of Common Additives In Protein Hydrolysate-Dextrose Solutions For Parenteral Hyperalimentation, Norman Hideo Kobayaski Jan 1973

A Compatibility Study Of Common Additives In Protein Hydrolysate-Dextrose Solutions For Parenteral Hyperalimentation, Norman Hideo Kobayaski

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The use of the alimentary route to supply essential nutrients, either by mouth or nasogastric tube, is by far the best. This route, however, requires an intact and functioning gastrointestinal tract which may be found in certain chronic intestinal diseases, malignant tumors, and cases of gastrointestinal obstruction. In there and certain other clinical situations, parenteral feeding is necessary to provide essential nutrients normally provided in the diet.

The intravenous route of administration is generally recognized as the most effective means of systemic administration. Yet, considering the other routes used clinically, it is of relatively recent development. Parenteral therapy began in …

Introduction, Thomas L. Shaffer Jan 1973

Introduction, Thomas L. Shaffer

Journal Articles

This symposium abounds with learning and insight, but one should not overlook the fact that its purposes and its effect are revolution. Institutional confinement of the "mentally ill" in America is a massive social failure and a festering evil. These authors lawyers, social scientists, scholars, psychiatrists, and students have a target in their sights, and they are not out primarily to analyze the target; they are out to destroy it.

Beef In W.A., Department Of Agriculture And Food, Western Australia

Bulletins - 3000 - 3999

There are four major regions of beef production in Western Australia, each suited to its own type of husbandry. In such a large area, climate plays an important part in limiting production off pasture and this is reflected in the different patterns of production that have emerged from the accumulated experience of working in these areas.

Lice Of Public Health Importance And Their Control, Harry D. Pratt, Kent S. Littig Jan 1973

Lice Of Public Health Importance And Their Control, Harry D. Pratt, Kent S. Littig

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials

Lice have been intimately associated with man for centuries. Infestations with lice occur today in the United States and many other countries despite great efforts to maintain high standards of public health. Public health agencies are often called upon if infestations include or expose large groups of people, particularly those in public institutions such as schools, jails, hospitals, or homes for the aged.

The three sucking lice that infest humans are: the body louse (Pedlculus humanus humanus), the head louse (Pediculus humanus capitis), and the crab louse (Pthirus pubis). The body louse is the …

Compatibility And Stability Of 8% Amino Acids Solution In Combination With Electrolytes, Vitamins And Antibiotics, David Harold Schuetz Jan 1973

Compatibility And Stability Of 8% Amino Acids Solution In Combination With Electrolytes, Vitamins And Antibiotics, David Harold Schuetz

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

For centuries, researchers have attempted to devise the ideal parenteral nutritional product readily amenable to physiological requirements. Hyperalimentation, intravenous alimentation, parenteral alimentation, parenteral feeding, and total parenteral nutrition are synonyms which refer to a method of complete intravenous nutrition reserved for patients demonstrating negative nitrogen balance.

The nutrient solution appeared to accommodate levels of potassium phosphate, calcium gluconate, and magnesium sulfate well in excess of “usual” therapeutic concentrations. Similarly, commonly employed vitamin supplements and insulin were examined in combination with the hyperalimentation solution and failed to demonstrate signs of physical incompatibility. However, instrumental analysis, i.e., U.V. spectroscopy and thin-layer chromatography, …
