Associations Between Phonology And Syntax In Speech-Delayed Children, Rhea Paul, Lawrence D. Shriberg Jan 1983

Associations Between Phonology And Syntax In Speech-Delayed Children, Rhea Paul, Lawrence D. Shriberg

Communication Disorders Faculty Publications

Interactions between phonology and syntax are inspected in continuous speech samples from 30 speech-delayed children. Two types of interactions are examined: The co-occurrence of speech and language delay and the effects of phonological reduction on the realization of phonetically complex morphophonemes. Four possible patterns of association between the phonological and syntactic systems are outlined, and subjects are assigned to these patterns based on their phonological and syntactic performance. Results indicate that two-thirds of the subjects display evidence of overall syntactic delay, whereas half show some limitation in the use of phonetically complex morphophonemes, their performance in that area being below …

Irritability In Autistic Children Treated With Fenfluramine, Fred Volkmar, Rhea Paul, Donald J. Cohen, B. Shaywitz Jan 1983

Irritability In Autistic Children Treated With Fenfluramine, Fred Volkmar, Rhea Paul, Donald J. Cohen, B. Shaywitz

Communication Disorders Faculty Publications

Letter to the Editor in response to a report by Geller et al. The article presented preliminary results suggesting the possible usefulness of fenfluramine (a substituted phenylethylamine widely used as an appetite suppressant) in the treatment of infantile autism (July 15, 1982, issue). The rationale for the use of this agent rests on its ability to lower peripheral-blood levels of serotonin and on the observation that a substantial minority of autistic persons have elevated peripheral-blood serotonin levels. The report emphasized the preliminary nature of the results in a small sample of three young autistic boys with elevated serotonin levels.

Toward A Phenomenological-Based Perspective Of Acculturation With Application To Scottish Immigrants, Dorothy M. Sermol Jan 1983

Toward A Phenomenological-Based Perspective Of Acculturation With Application To Scottish Immigrants, Dorothy M. Sermol

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis is an attempt to construct a perspective of the acculturation of immigrants drawing on certain communication- based phenomenological assumptions. From these phenomenological assumptions a Framework of Acculturation is constructed as a guide through which to examine the acculturation process. The Framework of Acculturation is then applied to the particular group of Scottish immigrants who live in the Northwest of the United States.

Validation Of Eisegesis Concepts In Assessment Reports Using The 16 Pf: A Training Method With Examples, Richard H. Dana, Brian Bolton, Vickie West Jan 1983

Validation Of Eisegesis Concepts In Assessment Reports Using The 16 Pf: A Training Method With Examples, Richard H. Dana, Brian Bolton, Vickie West

Regional Research Institute for Human Services

A training method for psychological report writing uses reliably abstracted concepts from reports prepared by students and experts for the same data sets. Consensual and unique concepts are compared for student and expert reports and evaluated by assessees. Unique concepts are further subdivided into skills (assessee accepted) and eisegesis (assessee rejected). Karson 16PF Reports from assessors were similarly broken down into consensual and unique concepts. Comparisons were made between 16 PF and Rorschach eisegesis that suggest student personality effects upon reports. A procedure for providing feedback to students is presented.

Increasing Staff Use Of Sign Language, Melanie Hepworth Neville Jan 1983

Increasing Staff Use Of Sign Language, Melanie Hepworth Neville

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the effectiveness of two procedures, a visual cue and performance posting, to modify the use of sign language by psychiatric technicians. The visual cue was first introduced alone, then paired with performance posting to encourage staff use of sign language with the developmentally disabled children in their charge. Application of the visual cue alone produced little change in staff sign useage. The visual cue plus performance posting condition increased staff use of sign language during mealtimes. Four weeks of follow-up data indicated that the use of sign language remained at a level well above baseline.

A Study Of Threshold And Loudness Summation In Normal-Hearing Listeners, Bruce Kwiecinski Jan 1983

A Study Of Threshold And Loudness Summation In Normal-Hearing Listeners, Bruce Kwiecinski

Independent Studies and Capstones

This paper presents some normative data on the relation between the perceived loudness of third-octave bands of noise and that of broad-band noise. The study used normally-hearing listeners and was used as a control study for a parallel study done with hearing impaired listeners.

A Study Of Threshold And Loudness Summation In Listeners With Sensorineural Hearing Impairments, Judy Ann Matsumoto

Independent Studies and Capstones

This paper investigates loudness summation in a group of listeners with moderate to severe hearing losses and the applicability of this information to hearing aid fittings.

Difference Limens For First Formant Frequencies Of Synthesized Vowels In Hearing-Impaired Listeners, Sheryl L. Guda

Independent Studies and Capstones

This paper studies auditory-vowel perception abilities of the hearing impaired. The study investigated the relationship among the difference limen for first formant frequencies of synthesized vowels in severe and profoundly hearing-impaired listeners, degree of hearing low, and general auditory speech perception.

Interaction Of Phosphatidylserine-Phosphatidylcholine Liposomes With Sickle Erythrocytes. Evidence For Altered Membrane Surface Properties, R. S. Schwartz, Nejat Düzgüneş, D. Tsun Yee Chiu, B. Lubin

All Dugoni School of Dentistry Faculty Articles

The sickle erythrocyte (RBC) is a pathologic RBC that contains multiple membrane abnormalities. Some of these abnormalities have been implicated in the pathophysiology of vasoocclusive crises characteristic of sickle cell disease; others have yet to be defined in terms of their clinical significance. Recent information has shown that sickle RBC adhere abnormally to cultured endothelial cells yet little is known about the ways in which sickle cells interact with model membranes of defined size and lipid composition. We investigated this phenomenon by interacting sickle RBC with artificial lipid vesicles (liposomes) containing acidic phospholipids. Our results demonstrate that sickle disease (hemoglobin …
