Background/aim: Colchicine poisoning has been associated with systemic toxicity, multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS), and mortality. In the present study, the demographic, clinical, and laboratory characteristics of pediatric colchicine poisoning cases and the incidence of organ failure are investigated to identify potential risk factors associated with MODS.

Materials and methods: Included in this retrospective multicenter cohort study were pediatric patients admitted to 28 tertiary-care pediatric intensive care units with a diagnosis of colchicine poisoning. Background/aim: This study aimed to evaluate the demographic, clinical, and hormonal characteristics; comorbidities; surgical pathology; treatment modalities; and long-term clinical outcomes of patients diagnosed with and managed for acromegaly at our tertiary referral center over a 15-year period.

Materials and methods: Between 2010 and 2024, 247 patients with acromegaly were evaluated. Diagnosis and biochemical remission were determined according to the 2024 Acromegaly Consensus Criteria.

The unfolding argument in the neuroscience of consciousness posits that causal structure cannot account for consciousness because any recurrent neural network (RNN) can be “unfolded” into a functionally equivalent feedforward neural network (FNN) with identical input–output behavior. Subsequent debate has focused on dynamical properties and philosophy of science critiques. We examine a boundary condition on the unfolding argument for RNN systems with rapid plasticity in their connection weights. We demonstrate through rigorous mathematical proofs that rapid plasticity negates the functional equivalence between the RNN and the FNN. Background: An estimated 5 to 8 million US children live with a parent who uses cannabis, and most cannabis users report smoking cannabis inside their homes, placing children at risk for cannabis secondhand smoke (cSHS) exposure. Indoor air quality (IAQ) monitoring provides real-time feedback on airborne pollutants and has shown promise in reducing in-home tobacco secondhand smoke exposure, suggesting its potential as an effective harm reduction strategy for cSHS.

Hand hygiene is the cornerstone of infection prevention in healthcare settings and is particularly critical in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) where patients are highly vulnerable due to immature immune systems and frequent exposure to invasive procedures. Healthcare associated infections (HAIs) remain a significant cause of morbidity and mortality among neonates. Evidence consistently identifies proper hand hygiene as the single most effective intervention to reduce HAIs in NICUs. It complements percutaneous liver biopsy (PLB) for complex or high-risk cases where PLB cannot be performed. Clinical practices for LLB vary across centers due to the lack of international standards. Background & aims: Clinical data show that genetic variants are significant risk factors for acute recurrent pancreatitis and chronic pancreatitis. To expand the understanding of the role of genetics in acute recurrent pancreatitis and chronic pancreatitis, high-throughput next-generation sequencing of 14 genes was completed in a multicenter pediatric cohort.

Methods: A cross-sectional study involving 944 pediatric patients with acute recurrent pancreatitis or chronic pancreatitis was conducted. High-grade gliomas (HGGs) are aggressive brain tumors with poor prognosis, driven in part by metabolic and epigenetic adaptations. Methionine metabolism supports HGG growth by supplying S-adenosylmethionine for methylation reactions, yet how nutrient availability influences chromatin organization in HGG remains incompletely understood. Using an immunocompetent mouse model of HGG, we found that dietary methionine restriction reduced tumor proliferation, extended survival, and induced partial nuclear inversion. We identified Hp1bp3 as a key regulator of tumor growth that functions by interacting with nuclear tethering proteins to mediate chromatin reorganization. The antibody response to influenza virus infection targets numerous viral proteins, with those specific for the hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) surface glycoproteins being the most extensively studied. Antibodies to HA and NA function as independent immune correlates of protection and form the basis of most vaccine approaches. In contrast, the contribution of antibodies to other viral proteins such as the nucleoprotein (NP) remains unclear, and existing studies have reached conflicting conclusions. BACKGROUND: This observational, quality initiative evaluated the impact of changing from a passive (dismissible) to an active (nondismissible without action) electronic health record alert on guideline-recommended lipid-lowering therapy (LLT) prescriptions in patients with recent myocardial infarction at risk for secondary events.

METHODS: We sequentially recruited a retrospective passive-alert (February 2018-July 2019; n=733) and a prospective active-alert (August 2020-January 2022; n=587) cohort of patients who triggered an alert to intensify LLT or order a low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) test if they had a recent myocardial infarction (within 12 months) and elevated (≥70 mg/dL) or missing LDL-C. This study compares several deep learning models including DenseNet20, CNN, ResNet50, VGG19, EfficientNet-B3, MobileNetV2, NASNetMobile, Xception to automatically classify brain meningiomas from MRI scans. A public dataset was used to evaluate the proposed model. All models were trained, validated, and tested on this dataset. Because meningiomas are common and manual reads, the goal is to speed and standardize diagnosis. Our main contribution is pairing a high-accuracy classifier with deep learning models. Among all models, DenseNet201 performed best, reaching 0.991% accuracy and reliably separating tumorous from non-tumorous MRIs.
