Objective The objective of this article was to conduct a comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis on the molecular epidemiology of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in the Middle East and North Africa. Methods PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, and Google Scholar databases were used for literature search on the molecular epidemiology, clustering rate and recent transmission index of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) published between 1 January 2000 to 31 December 2025. The study quality was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) and meta-analysis was carried out using R statistics version 4.5.3. Background

The project was implemented within a large Age-Friendly Health System (AFHS) in Houston, Texas, comprised of a geriatric outpatient clinic and a House Call program. Although the 4Ms of AFHS were regularly documented in the outpatient setting, there was limited documentation in the House Call Program.

BACKGROUND: There are few prospective studies of mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) versus cyclophosphamide (CYC) for pediatric lupus nephritis (pLN) and none evaluating rituximab (RTX).

METHODS: The Prospective Pediatric Lupus Nephritis Registry (ProPeL-R) enrolled patients <  21 years within 4 weeks of an initial kidney biopsy diagnostic of pLN. Demographic, clinical, and laboratory data were collected prospectively at enrollment, 3 months, 6 months, and then every 6 months thereafter for up to 5 years of follow-up. For this study, we compared patients receiving initial therapy with corticosteroids (CS) and either MMF (n = 33) vs. CYC (n = 18), and those treated with CS, either MMF or CYC, with RTX (n = 20) vs. without RTX (n = 51).

RESULTS: Histology consisted of 18% class III; 35% class IV; 25% mixed class; and 22% pure class V. Eighty-two percent were female. No significant differences in response or infection rates were identified between those receiving MMF or CYC. There was a significant increase in combined complete (CR) and partial response (PR) at 24 months with RTX use. Overall CR rates at 6 and 24 months were 35% …

Suitability of renal-mesenteric target arteries is an essential criterion for fenestrated-branched endovascular aortic repair (FB-EVAR). We describe a staged adjunctive technique of target vessel false lumen (FL) embolization to improve suitability for FB-EVAR in patients with chronic postdissection thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms (PD-TAAA) and dissection extension into the superior mesenteric artery (SMA). Three patients with SMA dissection and ectasia (diameter > 12-14 mm) underwent staged FL embolization with pre-emptive stent placement to optimize SMA incorporation. BACKGROUND: Urinary tract and kidney infections are potential complications in pediatric chronic kidney disease (CKD), especially among patients with congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT). We characterized the prevalence of self-reported infections from childhood through young adulthood; evaluated risk factors; and quantified the association with CKD progression.

BACKGROUND: In-vitro studies suggest that patients on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) may struggle to achieve therapeutic ceftaroline exposure to treat infections due to antibiotic sequestration within the ECMO oxygenator; however, there are no published data regarding ceftaroline concentrations from patients supported by ECMO.

PATIENT PRESENTATION: Here we present an analysis of ceftaroline pharmacokinetics in a 5-y-old patient supported on ECMO due to influenza-associated necrotizing pneumonia.

Background: Middle meningeal artery embolization (MMAE) has emerged as a promising adjunctive treatment for chronic subdural hematoma (cSDH); however, the efficacy and safety of adjunctive MMAE compared with surgery alone remains uncertain.

Methods: We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials from inception through June 2026. Randomized controlled trials comparing adjunctive MMAE plus surgical evacuation with surgical evacuation alone in patients with cSDH were included. The primary outcome was hematoma recurrence. Pooled odds ratios (ORs) with 95% CIs were calculated using a random-effects model.

BACKGROUND: Neonates with kidney failure require placement of a peritoneal dialysis catheter (PD-C) shortly after birth. PD-C malfunction and peritonitis, both common in this population, are associated with PD failure. The aim of this study was to describe our center's PD-C-related practices and outcomes in neonates with kidney failure.

METHODS: We performed a retrospective chart review of neonates who required kidney replacement therapy (KRT) within the first 30 days of life from 01/2018-12/2023. We evaluated for PD-C duration, PD-C replacement or revision, and peritonitis.

NAXE encephalopathy, also known as early-onset progressive encephalopathy with brain oedema and/or leukoencephalopathy-1 (PEBEL-1), is a rare and often lethal autosomal recessive mitochondrial disorder. Typical presentation includes psychomotor regression, ataxia, respiratory insufficiency and seizures triggered by febrile illness. This report describes three siblings from a consanguineous family who presented to a tertiary care hospital in Muscat, Oman, in 2022 and were found to have a homozygous pathogenic variant in the NAXE: NM_144772.2:c.827del, p.(Pro276Hisfs*43). Surgical site infections (SSI) are considered a hospital-acquired infection, leading to increased hospital length of stay (LOS), readmission rates, increased cost, morbidity, mortality rates, and poor postoperative outcomes. The literature review demonstrated the benefits of preoperative Chlorhexidine (CHG) bathing, but called for standardized protocols, improved education, and patient compliance. Research and clinical experience supported the need for improved patient compliance with CHG bathing. The purpose of this quantitative, cross-sectional secondary data analysis was to examine the relationship between music engagement and self-reported quality of life among adults aged 60 years and older, using data from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS). Guided by the Biopsychosocial-Spiritual (BPSS) framework, the study explored whether music engagement significantly predicted perceived well-being in later adulthood while accounting for chronic health conditions. The purpose of this qualitative mini ethnography adapted from traditional ethnography with limited time and scope, was to explore and understand perceptions of barriers and facilitators to health literacy among Black Americans with overweight and obesity in three South Carolina counties. Population data showed that approximately 40.3% of U.S. adults are obese. Moreover, Non-Hispanic Black communities are disproportionately affected by overweight and obesity despite efforts to combat the weight-related health risk. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate neonatal outcomes associated with birthweight discordance in twin pregnancies managed at a regional tertiary care centre in Oman. Methods: This five-year retrospective cohort study (2020–2024) was conducted at Nizwa Hospital, Nizwa, Oman, and included twin pregnancies of ≥ 24 weeks' gestation. Birthweight discordance was defined as ≥ 20%. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed, adjusting for gestational age at delivery, chorionicity, preeclampsia and gestational diabetes mellitus. Results: A total of 226 twin pregnancies were included, of which 45 (19.9%) had birthweight discordance ≥ 20%. Discordant pregnancies were delivered at an earlier gestational age than …
