Visual Speech Training Aid For The Deaf, Subhashri Venkat Jul 1990

Visual Speech Training Aid For The Deaf, Subhashri Venkat

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A computer-based vowel articulation training aid has been developed. A "continuous" acoustic-phonetic transformation is performed to map speech parameters to a lower dimensionality display space. There are two possible approaches to this transformation problem. The transformation could be either linear or a combination nonlinear/linear. The nonlinear transformation is performed using a multi-layered feedforward neural network with linear output layers. Speech parameters are extracted either from an analog filter bank arrangement (band energies) or by a digital signal processing procedure (Discrete Cosine Transform Coefficients). The speech parameters obtained from both methods correspond to the spectral envelope of the speech signals. The …

Characterization Of Hsd::Mudx128 Operon Fusion Mutant Of Escherichia Coli K-12, Marjorie Ann T. Reyno Jun 1990

Characterization Of Hsd::Mudx128 Operon Fusion Mutant Of Escherichia Coli K-12, Marjorie Ann T. Reyno

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The study of the regulation of gene expression in complex genes can be facilitated by the use of operon fusions which place a well characterized lacZ gene under the control of a promoter of interest. An hsd::MudX128 operon fusion mutant of E. coli K-12 isolated by Prakash (1986) was observed to have a high β-galactosidase activity (1000 units), ten to twenty times higher than other hsd::MudX mutants. This β-galactosidase activity was suppressed to a very low level (25 units) by the introduction of an F’ plasmid, F'101, which carries the 98 min to 2 min region of the …

Evaluation Of Headgear Safety : A Comparative Study, William J. Pritchard

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to determine the relative safety of headgear safety straps. Samples from five different safety headgear straps simulated orthopedic and orthodontic use and data were collected from a series of pulls on an Instron machine. The straps were compared by the distance the face bow traveled before the safety mechanism released, the force built into the face bow at safety release and the force required to remove the inner bow out of the molar tube. The conclusions are as follows: (1) the distance a face bow can travel from the molar tube and still be …

Head Nurse Leadership Behavior And Head Nurse And Staff Nurse Job Satisfaction And Burnout In The Intensive Care Setting, Dianne Vick Benton

Ellmer School of Nursing Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between head nurse (HN) leadership behavior and head nurse and staff nurse (SN) job satisfaction and burnout in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The two target populations for this study were: ICU HNs and ICU SNs. A sample of 10 HNs and 65 SNs completed four questionnaires. This study was conducted in eight community hospitals ranging in bed size between 150 to 700. Four research questions were tested. Utilizing t-tests. a significant difference was found between ICU HNs' and SNs' perceptions of the HN leader behavior of high task - …

The Effect Of A Multi-Component Treatment Package On Seat Belt Usage Among Hispanics, Senez Rodriguez-Charbonier Apr 1990

The Effect Of A Multi-Component Treatment Package On Seat Belt Usage Among Hispanics, Senez Rodriguez-Charbonier

Masters Theses

This study analyzed the impact of a combination of approaches on the frequency of seat belt usage in a large Hispanic community in western Michigan. Subjects in either a treatment or a no-treatment control condition were observed weekly for seat belt usage while arriving at church over several months. They were observed for four weeks prior, during and after an intervention program. Subjects in treatment condition attended weekly group meetings where they viewed seat belt use promotion videos, publicly signed behavioral contracts agreeing to use their seat belts, and received permanent prompts which were installed on the dashboard of their …

A Comparison Of Two Methods For Measuring The Attenuation Provided By Insert-Type Hearing Protection Devices, Brenda Barrett Kabat Feb 1990

A Comparison Of Two Methods For Measuring The Attenuation Provided By Insert-Type Hearing Protection Devices, Brenda Barrett Kabat

Dissertations and Theses

The need for hearing protection in industry has evolved from the growing awareness of the detrimental effects of noise on hearing and recent legislation enacted to protect the hearing of noise-exposed employees through the use of hearing conservation programs. In lieu of expensive or impractical engineering and administrative controls, personal hearing protection devices (HPDs) are considered to be the most practical and effective means of protecting employees from the damaging effects of noise in industry today.

Alternatives To And Reduction Of Animal Use In Biomedical Research, Education And Testing, John M. Frazier, Alan M. Goldberg Jan 1990

Alternatives To And Reduction Of Animal Use In Biomedical Research, Education And Testing, John M. Frazier, Alan M. Goldberg

Experimentation Collection

Biomedical endeavours can be divided into three major categories: research, education, and testing. Within the context of each of these categories, activities involving whole animals have made major contributions and will continue to do so in the future. However, with technological developments in the areas of biotechnology and computers, new methods are already reducing the use of whole animals in certain areas. This article discusses the general tissues of alternatives and then focuses on the development of new approaches to toxicity testing.

Detection Of Shigella In Feces Using Dna Amplification, Gad Frankel, Lee Riley, Jorge A. Giron, Janice Valmassoi, Adam Friedmann, Nancy Strockbine, Stanley Falkow, Gary K. Schoolnik

United States Public Health Resources

A rapid diagnostic method employing a polymerase chain reaction procedure (PCR) was used to identify Shigella and enteroinvasive Escherichia Coli. This procedure amplified a region of the invasive-associated locus (ial) from a crude DNA extract of feces. A synthetic 21-base oligonucleotide corresponding to the ial gene sequence was shown to specifically hybridize only with enteroinvasive E. Coli (EIEC) strains and Shigella species. Upon PCR amplification, a 320-base pair fragment was generated in DNA extracted from feces reconstituted with EIEC or Shigella flexneri but not in DNA from 70 normal stools lacking these organisms and could be readily …

Pesticide Exposures And Other Agricultural Risk Factors For Leukemia Among Men In Iowa And Minnesota, Linda Morris Brown, Aaron Blair, Robert Gibson, George D. Everett, Kenneth P. Cantor, Leonard M. Schuman, Leon F. Burmeister, Stephanie F. Van Lier, Fred Dick

United States Public Health Resources

Mortality surveys and death certificate studies have suggested an association between leukemia and farming. To investigate whether exposure to carcinogens in an agricultural setting is related to risk of leukemia, the authors conducted a population-based case-control inter view study of 578 white men with leukemia and 1245 controls living in Iowa and Minnesota. Consistent with recent mortality studies, there were slight, but significant, elevations in risk for all leukemia (odds ratio (OR) 1.2) and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (OR 1.4) for farmers compared to nonfarmers. There were no significant associations with leukemia for exposure to specific fungicides, herbicides (including 2.4-1) and …
