By those who regard orthodontic treatment in the light of a purely mechanical procedure the etiology of malocclusion is given a position of secondary importance. While not belittling the necessity for thorough treatment, it has been found that some cases under the most careful treatment procedure have been failures. This leads one to suppose that in such conditions the causative factors, whether known or unknown, are still in force. Perhaps one of the most puzzling of all dystrophies of the teeth is the macroscopical malformation called "Mottled Enamel".

This peculiarity is characterized by white, brown, and corn-colored opaque areas of enamel surrounded by apparently normal enamel. Upon examination, this enamel presents a smooth surface, though at times it may be slightly pitted. Nevertheless, the surface remains highly polished. If this surface is broken up with a bur, it is found to be of a chalky granular consistency, the whitish material at times containing the yellowish pigment which may occupy the entire thickness of the enamel. Successful animal husbandry is fundamentally dependent on the efficient reproduction and preservation of young stock. Not only are losses among the latter a prolific source of direct economic damage, but they also tend to create an equally serious disadvantage of a more indirect nature. Losses of young animals, unless a reduction of our live stock population can be tolerated, necessitate the setting aside of a larger number of females for purely reproductive purposes than would be required if such losses were not a factor.
