This thesis, submitted to Xavier University in 1933, surveys the chemical classification of proteins and their role in human nutrition, with the stated aim of preparing home economics students to understand protein's function in the diet. Jones organizes proteins into three major classes: simple proteins, including albumins, globulins, glutelins, protamins, and histones; conjugated proteins, including nucleo-proteins, glyco-proteins, phospho-proteins, and hemoglobins; and derived proteins, including albumoses, peptones, and peptids, describing the chemical composition, solubility properties, and sources of each.

This thesis, presented for the degree of Bachelor of Science, provides a systematic chemical study of the alkaloids, a class of complex nitrogenous plant substances possessing basic properties. Barre opens by defining the alkaloids and surveying the various systems used to classify them, whether by natural versus artificial origin, chemical nucleus (pyridine, quinoline, or isoquinoline), volatility, or botanical family of origin, and outlines their general physical and chemical properties, including solubility, optical activity, and characteristic reactions with precipitating and color-test reagents.

Pyorrhoea is one of the best known and commonest diseases in civilization. A certain dental company is advertising that four out of five are infected by this disease. This company has been lenient in their accusation, as men who are ardent students of pyorrhoea state specifically that 90 per cent of the world’s population have it in some form or other or have symptoms which would eventually turn into pyorrhoea. Knowing this and knowing also the results and unnecessary pain and discomforts that are produced, every individual should respect and fear this disease accordingly.

The pulpless tooth has been a topic of long discussion in the dental profession. From the maze of arguments that have been given certain concepts, have been accepted. To begin with, it is commonly believed that the periapical infection, if allowed to persist, will sooner or later lead to a breaking down of the patient’s general health. It is also generally accepted that, biologically, the pulpless tooth is not a dead tooth, in the sense that it becomes a foreign body. The determination of Calcium in the blood of Arthritic patients as an interesting problem was suggested by Doctor J. C. Metts, physician at the Sacred Heart Sanitarium from August 1927 to September 1930, and encouraged by Doctor F. W. Mackoy, present physician at the Sanitarium.

All the experimental work was carried on in the Laboratory of the Sacred Heart Sanitarium and all the specimens of blood were taken from cases present at the Sanitarium during the time of the writing of this thesis.
