The purpose of this study was to find out the immediate and residual antibacterial effects of the two preoperative skin preparation procedures most commonly used in the operating room of this selected hospital.

This study was conducted on one hundred selected surgical patients from the general medical and surgical units of this hospital. The preoperative skin preparation Procedure A (ether-alcohol-tincture of zephiran) was compared with the preoperative skin preparation Procedure B (3 per cent hexachlorophene solution). Data for the comparison were gathered by taking four cultures at specified times. The cultures were taken from the operative sites on the surgical …

Biomedical Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

The growth of Rickettsia mooseri was accelerated and quantitatively increased in embryonate eggs containing tritium oxide at levels of 180, 90, and 45 mc./egg during the growth period. The eggs of a group containing 22.5 mc./egg showed only a slight increase in the rate of growth of organisms; the infections in the eggs of a group given 11.2 mc./egg did not differ significantly from those of the control group. On the other hand, growth of R. akari was inhibited in embryonate eggs containing tritium oxide at levels of 180, 90, and 45 mc./egg, and partially inhibited in groups containing 22.5 …

The purpose of this study was to determine if Staphylococcus aureus present in mothers when admitted to the maternity unit of the Loma Linda Sanitarium and Hospital could be a factor in the development of staphylococcal infection in infants. Biological specimens were collected from one hundred and forty mothers and their infants from September 1, 1959, to January 31, 1960. The specimens were obtained from the nares and external vulva of all mothers upon admission to the maternity unit, and from the nares and head of their infants after delivery. The intellectual calm that prevailed in thyroid physiology on the basis of the concept that thyroxine was the thyroid hormone, was upset by the discovery and characterization of a new thyroid hormone in 1951 and 1952. In a brilliant series of experiments this new sub¬ stance, triiodothyronine, was found to be more potent and its action more rapid than thyroxine. Such observations had a salutary effect on thyroid physiology and stimulated a ferment of investigation of far-reaching consequence. Other thyroactive analogues of thyroxine and triiodothyronine have since been studied in an effort to elucidate the nature and mode of action …

The Effect Of Slowly Digesting Carbohydrates On Abnormal Glucose Tolerance Curves, Marie Klein

This has been a study in which it was attempted to determine the effect of slowly digesting food on the glucose tolerance curves of patients who had abnormal blood sugar levels.

The experimental method was used. Patients were selected by criteria which included certain symptomology and background of diabetic history. Fifty-two patients were prepared for glucose tolerance tests by a diet predominating in rapidly digested carbohydrates. This diet contained food which is commonly used in the American diet. After following the diet for three days, blood samples were drawn during the fasting state, and the patient was then given glucose, …

RESULTS from a five-year research programme carried out by the C.S.I.R.O. on the Abydos-Woodstock Pastoral Research Station indicated that euros could be controlled in a practical and economic way by the traditional method of water poisoning,

if it was continued for an extended period and carried out over a large area. Smallscale trials supported this claim, but no opportunity had occurred to assess the practicability of a large-scale poisoning operation.
