The effect of 9α-FF on the Na:K ratio, chloride, and pH of saliva and gastric secretions, and on the total and free acid of gastric juice in normal human subjects was investigated. This study was designed to investigate whether conditions could be produced in the normal human subject similar to those present in patients with primary aldosteronism by using large doses of 9α-FF. August and others found a change in salivary electrolytes when cortisone, desoxycortisone, or ACTH were given to normal subjects. In these cases as in primary aldosteronism there was a decreased Na:K ratio and potassium excretion, with sodium …

The Pathogenesis Of Periodontal Disease And Treatment Implications, Richard C. Oliver

Presently accepted concepts of the etiology and pathogenesis of periodontal disease do not adequately explain the following consistent clinical observations: (1) equal local etiologic factors do not result in equal periodontal destruction in all patients; and, (2) equal therapy is not equally successful in all patients. The differences in patient response must be due to differences within the patient. By relating the broadened concept of disease, as described by Engel, to periodontal disease, the reasons for these individual patient differences become apparent. A Survey Of Verbal Communications To Clinic Patients Related To Their Health Problem, Dorothy Kuester

The purpose of this study was to see what information concerning eight aspects of their health problems was communicated to return patients in the General Medicine Clinic of a part-pay urban outpatient department, and who of the clinic personnel were involved in verbalizing this information.

The descriptive survey was chosen as the method of study, using the observation technique with a work sheet. The eight categories of the work sheet were decided upon by a review of literature. These were broken down into four levels beginning with no information or slight information and progressing to greater depth and detail.

A Study Of Regeneration Of Peripheral Nerve In The Rat, James C. Jay

Due to improvements in fixation and embedding techniques a restudy of regenerating peripheral nerve was thought advisable in order to better understand and describe the processes which take place.

Femoral nerves of white Wistar rats were used. The lesions were made by either crushing or severing the nerve. After a period of regeneration, varying from 12 hours to six days, the wound was reopened and the injured portion fixed in situ with 1% osmium tetroxide. The tissues were then removed, dehydrated, embedded and sectioned. The sections were stained and studied with a modified RCA EMU2A electron microscope.

A Technique For Studying The Spacial Relationship Of Oral Hard Tissues Utilizing Panoral Radiography, Howard W. Conley

Although panoral radiography employing various techniques has been described in the literature since 1949, no information is available relative to its application in quantification of positional charge of the hard tissues of the oral region.

An assessment of the radiographic equipment available to this investigator for quantification studies seemed imperative before embarking on this research.

In order to establish a standard, five exposures were made on radiographic film rotating the source of radiation from left to right and from right to left. These films were superposed and it was established that the tolerances found using the Panorex machine were within …
