This institution began as part of a liberal arts college. This tradition in the state of Virginia started with Mr. Jefferson when the University was established at Charlottesville. He decreed that one of the first chairs should be in medicine, not as preparation for a professional career, but as a discipline which should be understood by all educated men. A number of years ago I decided to attempt to measure the intracellular pH of skeletal muscle by a more direct method than those in current use, that is, by an electrode. I excluded all forms of pH electrodes except the glass electrode and then set up a certain number of characteristics or requirements that this electrode should have. First, the electrode should be insulated in such a manner that only the pH-sensitive portion is in the cell cytoplasm. Second, the reference side of the electrode group should also be within the cell, because the cell has a transmembrane potential; …

In summary, one can find many reasons for believing that family planning programs should in general be associated with maternity services and that educational efforts should be concentrated during the weeks of pregnancy and the puerperium. During these periods the women of an age and fertility most in need of family planning are easily detectable. They are for obvious reasons interested in the subject and the most susceptible to advice. The staff needed for this work is already partly available among the physicians, nurses, midwives, and social workers connected with maternity services. In this lecture I want to address myself to the questions: What is the lowest oxygen tension compatible with adequate function, and what are the factors that set this limit? Much of the background to the material present here has been reviewed extensively in the not too distant past (Jӧbsis '64), and I will take the liberty of letting that article provide most of the detailed justification of my remarks today. THE toxic species of the genera Gastrolobium and Oxylobium are a unique group of poison plants which have caused considerable economic loss to stock-raisers in Western Australia ever since the early days of settlement.

These plants are widely distributed over the agricultural areas of the south-west, and, with the opening up of large tracts of land for stock-raising, the danger is as high as it has even been.

The purpose of this thesis is to test the theory of cognitive dissonance as it relates to a reader's selectivity in reading controversial material involving his personal prejudices or attitudes. Festinger states that forced or accidental exposure to new information which tends to increase dissonance will frequently result in misinterpretation and misperception of the new information by the individual thus exposed in an effort to avoid a dissonance increase. Therefore, cognitive dissonance theory would predict that a person's prejudiced attitude would negatively effect his reading comprehension on material which was disharmonious with his attitude. The organic base choline is of considerable interest to the physiologist because of its role in normal metabolic function, and to the pharmacologist because of its possible application in the treatment of several human diseases.

The overall function of choline in the biologic system must be seen as an equilibrium between its lipotropic activity as a whole molecule and its function as a source of methyl groups in biochemical reactions.

The substance choline, one of the quaternary nitrogen bases, has been the subject of a number of reviews and investigations. It has been described as a cholinergic agent, an inotropic agent, a vitamin, and perhaps in other ways. In spite of the interest shown in its action and uses, there is as yet very little information available as to the mechanism by which it is absorbed by the intestinal mucosa.

Within the few years following the publications of the first studies on reptilian thermoregulation (Mosauer, 1936; Attsatt, 1939; Cowles and Bogert, 1944; and Strelnidov, 1944) there has been an increasing number of investigations concerned with the mechanisms that underlie this phenomenon. Many studies have demonstrated that heliothermic lizards maintain a relatively constant body temperature during per- iods of diurnal and seasonal activity. Much of this regulation is dependent upon behavior. An extensive review of thermoregulation in both lizards and snakes has been compiled by St. Girons and St. Girona (1956).
