Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Types of psychiatric emergencies seen in general practice or in a hospital emergency setting are defined, along with recommendations for handling. Also discussed are P.E. in children, methods of detecting the potential suicide and some conclusions based on a 2562 patient survey in one hospital.

Normal and hypophysectomized rats were divided into equal homogeneous groups to determine the effect of cholestyramine, corn oil and cholesterol on the excretion of fecal bile acids and sterols. Bile acid turnover rates, pool sizes, and spectrums were studied and compared.

Vegetable Entrees In Nitrogen Balance And Obesity Studies, Gloria Tyndall

The first study was designed to evaluate by the nitrogen balance method the protein quality of a pure-vegetarian diet containing about 6 grams of nitrogen per day. The group as a whole maintained nitrogen equilibrium the average being - 0.11 grams of nitrogen per day. Two subjects were not in nitrogen balance, however, factors other than diet may have contributed to these results and are discussed in the thesis. Hemoglobin, serum cholesterol and total serum proteins did not change significantly during the study. The average true digestibility of 5 of the subjects was 85 percent. It was concluded that this …

Adults of the blood fluke Schistosoma mansoni were perfused from the hepatic portal system of CF1 female mice sixty to seventy days post infection. The worms were then incubated in Eagle’s minimal essential medium with glutamate and 0.03 mg/100 ml of nonlabelled aspartic acid. To this medium was added 10 μc of either NaH¹⁴0₃, glucose-UC¹⁴ or aspartate-4-C¹⁴. The worms were found to fix carbon from the NaH¹⁴0₃ and to incorporate the glucose and aspartate. The amount of activity recovered in five different chemical fractions after two hours incubation was determined …

The action of a chemotherapeutic agent as a tool in studying its effect upon a primary growth center, the mandibular condyle, was investigated. So far as can be ascertained, no studies have been reported where these growth sites have been eliminated or modified by the use of chemotherapeutic growth inhibitors.

Observation of mandibular and alveolar growth following the infusion into the left external carotid artery of a cancer chemotherapeutic agent, 5-Fluorouricil (Roach-Hoffman), was noted. Comparisons were made between the infused and the uninfused sides of the mandible observing gross growth changes.

The morphologic characteristics of the oral cavity in five contemporary Western Indian and Alaskan Eskimo groups have been investigated by the use of study models of the dental archs. The sample consisted of 216 individuals, including 44 Navajos, 43 Apaches, 40 Papagos, 42 Pimas and 47 Alaskan Eskimos.

The first purpose of the study was to determine the extent of investigator error. This was accomplished by remeasuring many morphologic traits of the dentition in 125 Indians which had previously been measured by different investigators using the same study models. The Effect Of Schistosoma Mansoni On Free Amino Acid Levels In Mice, Richard D. Tkachuck

Free amino acid levels in the blood plasma of mice infected with Schistosoma mansoni Sambon, 1907, were measured at 3, 6, and 9 weeks post-infection with an automatic amino acid analyzer. Significant differences between experimental and control animals occurred at all three time periods. At 3 weeks, asparagine, alanine, citrulline, proline, methionine, and threonine levels all were lower in the infected animals. At 6 weeks, four differences were noted. Alpha-amino-n-butyric acid, ornithine, lysine, and histidine all had lower values in infected animals. At 9 weeks there were 12 differences. A computer model of a human maxillary central incisor was devised to predict the momentary center of rotation of a tooth when a force was applied to the crown. The root of a tooth was divided up into a series of small segments to simulate the resisting forces set up along the root by the periodontal fibers. Each segment was assumed to resist a force in proportion to its area.

I have made it my task with this paper to outline principles for the treatment of ovarian carcinoma. Emphasis has been laid on pathology and on anatomical extent of the growth. The extension of the tumor should be outlined in detail at clinical examination and at laparotomy. Excision of the carcinoma should be performed to the greatest possible extent. Every effort should be made to keep the capsule intact. In cases of serous and endometrioid carcinoma fixed to surrounding tissue by firm adhesions, it may be appropriate to restrict the operation to an explorative laparatomy and to operate on the …

The truth about generic equivalency has not yet been determined. The arguments in the generic equivalency controversy are confounded by names, proprietary (trademark, brand name) as opposed to non-proprietary (generic, branded-generic), yet quality of the products is not necessarily related to any name. The efficacy and not the name of the product is important. The crucial question to ask is whether the product is clinically or therapeutically effective, giving reliable and uniform results.

Rational therapy requires accurate diagnosis. When we apply this precept to anxiety a fundamental question arises. Is anxiety an illness in terms of the now berated medical model which holds that an illness has a cause, a natural history, and hopefully a cure? Or is anxiety a basic aspect of the human condition, an innate pattern of response which becomes pathological when stress, induced by physiologic and social forces, is magnified out of proportion to the original stimulus? If the latter is true, then stress and social interactions are the causative factors, the anxiety only a reaction. Logically then, the …

Adrenergic Stimulation And Sodium Transport, Charles O. Watlington

The effect of catecholamines and a beta-adrenergic blocking agent on sodium flux and short-circuit current was evaluated in isolated frog skin. Alpha stimulation (pronethalol plus epinephrine) decreased net sodium flux and short-circuit current to an equivalent degree. Kinetic studies during alpha stimulation demonstrated a decrease in rate coefficient for entry into the skin transporting compartment but no change in the rate coefficient presumed to be related to active transport. Beta stimulation (isoproterenol) produced an equivalent increase in sodium influx and outflux with no change in net flux, and development of non-sodium current.
