Immunoglobulin Levels In Spinal Fluid And Saliva By Direct Immunochemical Assay And Microscopic Measurements, Hajime Hayashi, Gerald A. Logrippo, Mary Perry

The immunochemical procedure used in this hospital for serum immunoglobulins (Igs) has been modified to increase sensitivity (5-to-20-fold) so that minute quantities of immunoglobulins can now be measured directly in unconcentrated body fluids. Normal spinal fluid Ig levels (±2 S.D. from normal means) were found to be: 0.01-0.21 mg/100 ml for IgA; 0.5-2.50 mg/100 for IgG: and no detectable quantities for IgM. Normal (pooled) salivary Ig levels were found to be 0.01-2.25 mg/100 ml for IgA: trace quandties to 1.85 mg/100 ml for IgG: and no detectable quantities for IgM. The differences observed from the osteology and myology are few and subtle.

Neither species is consistent in having all of the anatomical characters equal. E. skiltonianus, however, is more variable than gilberti. This species: 1. exhibits a wider range of variation in the number of slips of the intermandibularis anterior; 2. has two distinct bundles of the depressor mandibularis; and 3. has variation in the anterior suture pattern of the frontal, nasal, prefrontal and maxilla elements. E. gilberti on the other hand has: 1. only one distinct bundle of the depressor mandibularis; 2. a frequent reduction of the relative size …

Mites of 47 species and lice of 16 species were taken from reptiles of 3 species, birds of 23 species, and mammals of 18 species at the National Reactor Testing Station between June, 1966, and September, 1967. Mammals differed in degree of infestation relative to their geographic distribution at the station. The number of species of ectoparasites which occurred on a particular kind of host generally was in direct proportion to the number of hosts examined, but exceptions occurred in some instances. In some cases the rate of infestation differed relative to the sex of the host. The greatest numbers …

Algal Growth And Decomposition: Effects On Water Quality, Phase Ii, Edward G. Foree, Ronald L. Barrow

The decomposition and associated nutrient regeneration of three unialgal cultures and one mixed culture containing an indigenous population of bacteria and microscopic animals were studied under dark, constant temperature laboratory conditions. After periods of nutrient-deficient growth ranging from O to 30 days, these cultures were inoculated with decomposer populations and subjected to anaerobic and aerobic environments for the decomposition studies. The extend of decomposition was determined from the percentage volatile suspended solids and percentage particulate COD remaining after 200 days of decomposition. Distribution Of The Native Trees Of Utah, Kimball S. Erdman

Although botanists have been actively collecting in Utah for well over a century, the distribution of many plants are as yet imperfectly known. This is, in part, due to the scattered nature of Utah herbarium material. Also the terrain of the state has impeded collection in more rugged and remote areas. The present study gathers together the data from the major collections of native Utah trees and clarifies our present understanding of tree distributions in the state. The older collection records have been extensively supplemented by the field work of the author and other botanists.

Growth hormone (GH) synthesis and release is controlled by hypothalamic GH releasing factor. Thyroid hormones, androgens and estrogens in physiologic concentrations enhance GH secretion but a controlling role for glucagon and vasopressin in GH release is not established. Under stress, ACTH directly facilitates GH release while the similar action of the catecholamines is mediated by the a-adrenergic receptors. Though physiologic doses of glucorticoids and progestins do not affect GH liberation, prolonged administration of medroxyprogesterone acetate or of glucocorticoids in high dosage will decrease blood levels or blunt Gti responsiveness. A program to upgrade the level of nursing involvement in patient care has been established in conjunction with Wayne Slate University. Offered as a possible solution to the shortage of health care personnel, the master's degree program would result in an upward movement of medical personnel and provide more continuity of care to the patient. More specifically, the trained Health Nurse Clinician would be able to provide better nursing care because of the nurse's greater awareness of the patient's health problem. The Biodegradability Of Detergents And The Effects Of Biodegradable Detergents Upon Root Elongation Of Certain Plants, Nancy Lou Bishop

Masters Theses

The effects of three biodegradable detergents upon root elongation of Cucumis sativus and Avena sativa was determined. All three detergents inhibit root elongation; the degree of inhibition depends on the brand of detergent and the species tested. Contact of the detergents with a sandy-loam results in reversal of inhibition of root elongation; the degree of reversal varies with detergent and species. However, reversal after 48 hours contact with soil does not appear to be due to degradation by microorganisms. Effects of aeration and of pH on test solutions are discussed.

Two group A phages, P9c/2 and P4/2, were studied. Their density, sedimentation velocity, and biochemical properties were compared. Their densities were determined by density gradient centrifugation in 38.3% cesium chloride. Sedimentation velocity was used to determine their molecular weights. To accomplish this, the DNA of P9c/2 and P4/2 was labeled with tritium and T₂ DNA, labeled with ³²P, was used as a standard. The DNA of P9c/2 and P4/2 was separately mixed with T₂ DNA and centrifuged in a 0-15% sucrose gradient. The molecular weights were calculated using the formula D₂/D₁= (M_{2 …}
