The approach to total patient care in a teenager with malignant disease represents one of the greatest challenges to any physician. To bridge the generation gap and communicate in an area of medicine where we cannot always cure, but often only palliate, guide, comfort and listen, is often difficult for we physicians who are so often taught only how to win therapeutic battles. Malignancy is the leading medical cause of death in the 10-21 year age group in the United States. ALTHOUGH it was first thought that all varieties of subterranean clover would cause ewe infertility, research in the last 10 to 15 years has shown that varieties differ in potency.

The relative level of potency has also been shown to remain consistent for any one variety under normal conditions.

Bates, one of the trustees of the M. D. Anderson Foundation, on the history and development of the TMC is significant because he was one of the founders of the TMC.

Since the introduction of the hypothesis that abnormal transmethylation of biogenic amines may be associated with mental illness, transmethylation processes have been shown to be important in the production of biologically active amine derivatives. Laduron has shown that dopamine can be N-methylated with an enzyme from rat brain that requires 5-methyltetrahydrofolic acid (5MTHF ) as a methyl donor. This study shows that the methylation reaction which produces epinine from dopamine is greatest with supernatant from homogenized caudate lobe as compared to the cerebellum, hippocampus, cortex, and raphe nucleus: the brains of male rats were dissected and homogenized, the supernatant was …

It would seem appropriate that studies be conducted on the development of an oral inhalation dosage form antinauseant. The present project will consist of developing and testing a series of aerosol formulations to determine their feasibility in antinauseant therapy. In vitro pressure, valve release, spray pattern, particle size, and aging studies will be performed. The present work will also include an in vivo evaluation of promising formulations.

An in vitro method was tested whereby the processes of dissolution and distribution of active ingredient into a lipoid solvent were combined in one model and evaluated.

The objectives of this research project were: (1) to evaluate the efficacy of the in vitro model known as the Desaga Resomat, in the testing of gastrointestinal absorption; (2) to apply the procedure and instrument to a group of therapeutically important products in determining their absorption characteristics; (3) to graphically illustrate the absorption profile of a specific drug as per cent absorbed vs. time, simulating in vivo absorption; (4) to compare the profile …

The Immediate Effect Of Swimming And Track Competition On Blood Ph Values, James B. Knott

Masters Theses

The purpose of the study was to investigate the changes associated with blood pH and different exercise work loads during competition. Finger tip blood samples (1 milliliter), were obtained from 33 male subjects from the varsity swimming and track teams of Eastern Illinois University. The samples were taken prior to exercise and between three and seven and one half minutes after cessation of the event. The blood samples were analyzed with a Radiometer Micro Blood pH Unit. Observations Related To The Mechanisms Of Tetracycline-Induced Lipid Accumulation In A Strain Of Mouse Fibroblasts Cultivated In Vitro, Dale William James

Intravenous administration of tetracycline has been known to result in fatty degeneration of the liver. This study was undertaken in order to elucidate some of the actions of tetracycline on mammalian cells in culture and to attempt to relate these findings to the clinical condition of fatty degeneration of the liver mentioned above.

It is suggested that lipid accumulation occurring after tetracycline administration is possible the result of a decrease in B-lipoprotein synthesis and enzyme inhibition. These factors could result from the high blood levels of tetracycline seen after large and rapid intravenous injections of the drugs into normal patients …
