A Clinical Trial Of Tobramycin With Pharmacological And Microbiological Studies, Keith Burch, Richard D. Nichols, Edward L. Quinn, Frank Cox, Evelyn J. Fisher, T. Madhavan, Donald Pohlod

Tobramycin, a new aminoglycoside antibiotic, was shown to be effective in vitroagainst Pseudomonas, Klebsiella, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterobacter, Proteus mirabilis, indole-positive Proteus, and Eshcherichia coli. It was shown to produce serum and urine concentrations similar to gentamicin when administered intramuscularly. Preliminary animal studies showed this agent to have nephrotoxic and ototoxic effects similar to gentamicin. In our studies, tobramycin was well tolerated and produced only two transient elevations in serum creatinine and no abnormalities in audiograms and vestibular function tests. It was effective in 10 of 12 susceptible infections, including 2 of 4 with Pseudomonas endocarditis. Tobramycin compared favorably with gentamicin …

Effects Of A Nuclear Detonation On Arthropods At The Nevada Test Site, Dorald M. Allred

Fifty-three arthropod species were studied in an area affected by an underground nuclear detonation. These were represented by 10 species of ants, 17 beetles, 5 orthopterans, 4 scorpions, 6 solpugids, and 11 spiders (Table 16). Relative populations were determined prior to the detonation and at three periods after the detonation–(1) one and two months after (August and September 1962), (2) 11 months after (June 1963), and (3) 13 months after (August 1963). The results of experimentation approximately twenty years ago with variuos bacteriophages by Ralston and Krueger¹⁶, Anderson and Felix¹, Luria and Human¹², and by Bertani and Weigle² have shown that the host range of a given phage depends directly on the bacterial strain on which the phage has last propagated. This event came to be known as host-induced modification or host-controlled variation. As this phage host range is controlled by the host environment and can be altered from one generation to another it has, according to Luria, made microbiology "the last stronghold of Lamarckism" …

A quantitative and ecological study of the algae of Huntington Canyon, Emery County, Utah, was conducted from March 1971 to April 1972. Net plankton, nannoplankton, periphyton, and visible attached algae were studied. Certain physical and chemical parameters in the waters of Huntington Creek and a small pond along its course were also measured.

Huntington Creek contains a wide diversity of genera and species of algae. Diatoms are the main constituent of the flora of this stream throughout the year. Hydrurus foetidus is prevalent in Huntington Creek from late winter to early summer, and filamentous blue green algae abound in the …

This study was undertaken to record the known history of the Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus) in Utah as we have been able to construct it from both the literature and from our original research that extends over about a 30-year period in the state. The present total population of the peregrine in Utah is possibly only 10 percent of what it has been in historic times. In an effort to find explanations for the decline, we have explored hypotheses of climatic changes, impact of pesticides, disease, and human disturbances. A comparative study of the breeding ecology of 12 raptor species was conducted in the eastern Great Basin from 1967-1970. The project was designed to determine the composition and densities, habitat selection, territoriality and predatory habits of raptorial birds in a semiarid environment. All topics were analyzed comparatively, relating the requirements and activities of the 12 raptor species.

Average yearly population densities of all species approximated 0.5 pairs per square mile, but much of the available habitat was not utilized. Predominant raptors were the Ferruginous Hawk and Great Horned Owl. Other important raptors included the Golden Eagle, Red-tailed Hawk and …

Ford Institute for Medical Research, was the first private medical center in the State of Michigan to purchase a scanning electron microscope and to begin to apply it, a year ago, to the study of medical and biological problems in both the animal and the human. This article briefly describes how the instrument works and shows some samples of micrographs produced.

The purpose of this paper is to introduce a new theoretical finishing appliance which should reduce the problems encountered during finishing with the present appliances. Maxillary and mandibular Buccal Arch Positioner appliances were constructed on a model that could deliver custom-designed force magnitude and direction to each tooth.

The mean force and displacement of 1 mm. for each flexible component were quantitated individually while all other flexible components were in a passive bracket position to see if the force magnitude to each tooth was constructed properly. The effect of tooth cleaning procedures on the gingival sulcus has been investigated. Clinically healthy gingivae from thirty-two maxillary anterior teeth of eight individuals served as experimental sites. Measurements were obtained from zinc-oxide eugenol impressions of the sulcular area. Subsequent to periods of toothbrushing, the presence of a gingival sulcus could generally be demonstrated. This was observed for the Roll as well as for the Bass method of brushing. Following no-brushing periods, during which chlorhexidine plaque control was exercised, a reduction in sulcus depths and often a disappearance of the sulcus was noted. The virulence of animal-passaged Mycoplasma arthritidis (158) was demonstrated to be enhanced in rats by growth in oleic acid-enriched broth. The virulence of a laboratory-maintained culture of the same strain was unaffected by similar growth conditions. No differences either in the immune response as measured by complement-fixing (CF) antibodies or in the histogenesis of the disease were detected when rats were injected with animal-passaged M. arthritidis grown either in the presence or in the absence of oleic acid. All tests for metabolism-inhibiting (MI) antibodies in the rat were negative.
