Health education is a process which effects changes in the health practices of people and in the knowledge and attitudes related to such changes. Education is an internal process for the individual concerned. He educates himself, even though his education is assisted by such means as contacts with health workers, appeals directed to him, information made available, clarification of issues, alternatives, and consequences as a basis for a rational choice. Education thus places responsibility on the individual and is essentially different from a compliance approach. It involves motivation, communication and decision-making. Planned education must take into account the relevant knowledge …

The flora of California has been studied as a whole, but with the exception of Yosemite Valley few specific areas in Tuolumne County have been investigated.

The area chosen for this investigation was approximately forty acres of the lava flow known as Table Mountain. This forty acres is located in the southeast portion of the Omega Mine near Rawhide Flat, Tuolumne County, California. The decision to use this area for study was based on its relative freedom from man's influence and its accessibility. The Omega Vine belongs to the author and its use was restricted during the period of investigation

The study of conformation in drug action can be approached from two directions, (i) that of the drug, and (ii) that of the receptor. Since the problem of elucidating the biologically active conformation of drug molecules has been extensively studied and is very well reviewed^1,2, it should be equally productive to explore the conformational aspects of receptors.

An original study was undertaken to examine the relationship of clients of Project Jump Street, Inc., a methadone maintenance program, to changes in personality factors as measured by R.B. Cattell's Sixteen Personality Factor Inventory, to compare the national norms of drug addicts/methadone users to the result of the 16 PF of clients of Project Jump Street, Inc., and to determine if significant differences appear among treatment phase I, phase II, and phase III.

Atherosclerotic disease is an almost universal phenomenon and increases in severity and frequency with increasing age. Atherosclerosis may contribute to several disorders including bursting of an artery, blockage of an artery, or induction of arterial clotting. The culmination of these diseases is usually premature since at the time of death the unaffected organs are in reasonably satisfactory condition and could have operated for several more years. Among the many factors which act in concert to produce the disease, serum cholesterol levels play a central role. [From the Discussion] In summary, we have shown that prostaglandin E1, when injected in the rabbit knee produces synovitis and cartilage matrix degradation. The finding that salicylate cannot prevent this degeneration whereas chloroquine can, is most likely due to their different mechanisms of action in this system. Whereas chloroquine's ability to stabilize membranes is protective int his experiment, salicylate's ability to prevent the biosynthesis of prostaglandins is by passed and therefore is not.

The major objective of the work was to clarify some of the adaptive mechanisms that a common widespread species would show as a possible requirement for survival in its natural habitats. Analysis of various populations of Xanthium (cocklebur) indicated differences in chlorophyll levels and leaf chloroplasts ultrastructure between populations. The study also revealed some insight into intrapopulational variation in dark requirements for flowering of selected populations. In addition, caloric values of dried leaf material of cocklebur were analyzed for interpopulational differences. It was evident that higher chlorophyll levels are correlated with increase in latitude of origin and a corresponding decrease …

Efficacy Of Betaprone With Ultraviolet Irradiation On Hepatitis B Antigen In Human Plasma Pools (A Retrospective Study), Gerald A. Logrippo, Hajime Hayashi

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

In a retrospective study, hepatitis B antigen (HB Ag) was found in 14 lots of human plasma pools (16-20 liters each) that had been treated by the combined Betaprone (BPL) with ultraviolet (UV) irradiation procedure. No evidence of clinical hepatitis was found during a six-month follow-up after 185.2 liters of HB Ag positive plasma were Infused into 257 patients. Since HB Ag positive blood products treated by BPL with UV produced no clinical hepatitis, it is evident that our treatment is efficacious against hepatitis virus agents.
