This project began with the notion that an in-depth examination of perceived changes in the parent-child relationship as reported by the noncustodial father would be both beneficial to mental health professionals as well as to paraprofessional groups and organizations working with divorced fathers. The authors were aware of much related research pertaining to the children of divorced parents and also the plight of divorced mothers, but felt there to be a lack of data concerning the noncustodial father and thus identified this area as an important mental health concern.

During the last decade, the literature on media exposure has been dominated by a single theoretical system of personality functioning—the social learning model. The model emphasizes that the disinhibition of already-learned behavior, the learning of new behaviors, and the establishment of patterns of personality result from observing the behavior of other people (models) and from vicarious reinforcement upon viewing those models successfully engaging in rewarded sequences of behavior.

It is a tribute to the degree to which social learning oriented psychologists have successfully influenced intellectual and governmental thinking that the model is seldom questioned as providing the appropriate basis for …

Ultrasonic Versus Hand Filing Of The Human Root Canal System, Howard W. Scholz Jr.

A comparison was made of ultrasonic filing versus hand filing using three solutions to flood the canals of 24 extracted human maxillary central incisors. A modified PR-30 Cavitron insert was used in a Cavitron 1010 unit for the ultrasonic filing. The clinical crown was removed with a diamond saw and water spray at the cemento-enamel junction. The two major groups were ultrasonic filing versus hand filing; the three subgroups were solution/solvents - 10% EDTA, 2.0% NaOCl, and distilled water.

An experimental study was conducted with twenty-one breast-feeding primiparas during the initial four-week post-partal period to test the effect of in-home community health nursing assessment and counseling on the breast-feeding success rate. It was hypothesized that mothers receiving assessment and counseling regarding physical, informational and psychosocial needs, would be more successful than those who were not counseled.

Criteria for success were: (1) breast-feeding at four weeks postpartum, (2) an adequate milk supply as evidenced by no need for formula supplementation to keep the baby satisfied, (3) an infant weight gain of one to two pounds during the four-week period, and …

Human Placental Alkaline Phosphatase And Steroid Metabolism By Rat Adrenals, Allen G. Meier

Human placental alkaline phosphatase was purified by butanol extraction, methanol precipitation and chromatography on DEAE-cellulose. The pH optimum was found to be 10.9. The enzyme was competitively inhibited by di-ethyl-p-nitrobenzyl-phosphonate and copper sulfate. An increase in enzymatic activity occurred in the presence of the phosphate ion (HPO₄) and ATP.

The enzyme was crystallized from a 40% saturated solution of ammonium sulfate and shown to be homogeneous by sedimentation analysis. Homogeneity of the enzyme was also demonstrated using poly-acrylamide-gel-electrophoresis. At a pH of 7.5% the electrophoretic pattern yielded a single band and showed no significant contamination.

Stability Of Perceived Tension As A Function Of The Menstrual Cycle, Paula Englander-Golden, Keith A. Willis, Richard A. Dienstbier

The stability of tension judgments among males and females who were either taking or not taking combination low-progestin oral contraceptive pills was investigated. Judgments of interpersonal pressure in videotaped vignettes provided tension measures. The vignettes were presented in two sessions separated by two weeks. Correlations between pressure judgments of .94 for males, .79 for pill females and .40 for non-pill females (all sig < .002) supported the prediction that non-pill females experience the largest fluctuations in tension across the menstrual cycle. A significant number of non-pill females who changed their scores and who changed from midcycle to premenstrual-menstrual phases or vice versa between the two experimental sessions shifted their tension scores in the predicted direction (p < .04). As predicted, non-pill females scoring in the lower half on premenstrual-menstrual symptomatology were more consistent in pressure judgments than those high on symptomatology, with correlations of .51 (sig < .004) and .24 (NS) respectively. Analysis of pressure judgments as a function of menstrual phase and high-low symptomatology indicated a main effect for symptomatology (sig < .01) with the high group perceiving more pressure. Lack of a main effect for menstrual phase was attributed to large individual variations in tension scores. Results were interpreted as indicating physiological causality underlying the variability in tension across the menstrual cycle. Substituting the Repression-Sensitization dimension for symptomatology yielded no significant results which could lead to a psychological interpretation of such variability.

Stressor Effects Of High Relative Humidity And A High Moisture Diet On Appearance Of Disease From Nuclear Polyhedrosis Virus In Larvae Of Porthetria Dispar (L.), Pauline Thomas

High relative humidity (R.H.) and a high moisture diet were tested as stressors in the incidence of nuclear polyhedrosis virus (NPV) disease of larvae of Porthetria dispar (L.). Relative humidity was shown to have no effect on the appearance of NPV disease in larvae reared in the laboratory. However, a high mortality from other causes was sustained by a group of larvae subjected to both high R.H. and a high moisture diet. The absence of NPV disease during the first larval instar period confirmed earlier findings that effective egg sanitization virtually eliminates NPV disease. This thesis explores the concept of bioenergy as an integral force underlying both human physiology and emotional experience. Drawing on a wide range of historical, cultural, and scientific perspectives, the work examines how different traditions and researchers have conceptualized and attempted to measure or influence this subtle energy. The discussion begins with Wilhelm Reich’s notion of “orgone energy,” a vital force he linked to psychological health and emotional regulation. Reich’s controversial theories and experimental devices are considered in the broader context of psychoanalysis and somatic therapy.

Phytic acid was quantitatively analyzed in sprouted alfalfa, lentil, mung bean and soy bean seeds. Pulverized dry seeds served as a control and the various sprouting times were 12, 24, 48 and 72 hours after a 12 hour soaking. A comparison was made between sprouts grown in the light for the last 24 hours vs sprouts kept in darkened areas for the total growing time.

A cephalometric study was conducted to determine the ideal inclination of the maxillary central incisor for various facial patterns. Selected measurements were made on lateral headplate tracings of three samples: ideal, random and Class III malocclusions. Statistical analysis of data included means, standard deviations, simple correlations and stepwise regressions.

The Frankfort plane was found to be the most reliable reference plane when measuring the inclination of the maxillary central incisor. The white-faced ibis (Plegadis chihi) which nested in northern Utah was assessed as a species with a relatively low reproductive potential. Ibises normally laid either three or four eggs in a clutch and did not renest persistently, nor with good success, if initial nesting attempts failed. Evidence indicated that the birds did not breed until at least 2 years old. Competition for food, exposure to severe weather, and predation were conspicuous sources of nestling mortality. White-faced ibises usually fed in irrigated agricultural areas, where they came into direct contact with insecticides, such as DDT which was used routinely …

Early Vagotomies At Henry Ford Hospital: An Historical Vignette And A Follow-Up, James C. Gruenberg, Conrad R. Lam

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Over a one-year period beginning in April, 1946, nine transthoracic vagotomies were done at the Henry Ford Hospital. Three of the patients had had a partial gastrectomy previously and the operation was done for recurrent bleeding from marginal ulcers. Thirty years later, an attempt was made to ascertain the present condition of these patients. Long term follow-ups were possible on six patients and follow-ups of one, six and 14 years on the others. All nine patients had immediate relief of ulcer pain and cessation of bleeding if present. No subsequent drainage operation was required for the six patients with primary …

This study compared the ability of three different bone growth factor combinations with that of Ca(OH)₂ to stimulate apical closure as well as the effectiveness of Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) as an apical barrier. Fifty-six roots of second and fourth mandibular premolars of seven six- month old beagle dogs were used. Periradicular lesions were created over a four week period. The canals were cleaned and shaped and filled with Ca(OH)₂ for one week. They were then irrigated and received one of seven different treatments in a balanced design. Growth factors were placed in a carboxymethylcellulose carrier and delivered …
