Studies On Uveitis Part I: Aqueous Studies, Philip C. Hessburg
Studies On Uveitis Part I: Aqueous Studies, Philip C. Hessburg
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Aqueous microbiological and cytological studies were performed on 134 anterior chamber taps done on 118 patients both with and without uveitis. Cell wall defective bacterial forms (CWDF) were recovered from about 40% of these aqueous specimens and classical bacteria were recovered from 12%. A statistically significant difference could not be found between the incidence of bacterial cell wall defective forms in the various anatomical types of uveitis. There were hints from this work that the presence of CWDF In the aqueous was more frequent in younger patients with uveitis, early in the uveitis attack, if there were multiple foci of …

The Cardiovascular Effects Of Human Contact With Coronary Artery Disease Patients In The Coronary Care Unit, Margaret A. Palmour
The Cardiovascular Effects Of Human Contact With Coronary Artery Disease Patients In The Coronary Care Unit, Margaret A. Palmour
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Ten coronary artery disease patients were selected using purposive method of sampling and observed for six hours. It was postulated that 1) Human contact with coronary artery disease patients in the coronary intensive care unit would be associated with significant (p = 0.05) changes in the electrocardiogram such as: (a) increased heart rate more than 10 per cent, (b) changed atrio-ventricular conduction more than 10 per cent, (c) changed ST segment one millimeter or more and (d) increased frequency of ectopic beats more than 10 per cent. 2) The degree of stress and cardiac response was related to a number …

An Understanding Of Care For The Geriatric Patient, Lois Jacobs Ricci
Theses
Lois Jacobs Ricci’s thesis, An Understanding of Care for the Geriatric Patient: A Manual for the Inservice Instructor, focuses on the need for continuous education in nursing homes to enhance the quality of geriatric care. The manual provides guidance for inservice instructors, emphasizing that nursing home staff must regularly update their knowledge and skills to address the unique challenges of caring for elderly patients.
The study highlights the significance of inservice training in maintaining high standards of patient care, job satisfaction, and effective communication among healthcare workers. Ricci outlines key components of an inservice program, including the importance of …

A Study Of Reality Orientation And A Program Design For A Geriatric Setting, Mary Barrett Paspalas
Theses
The thesis, "A Study of Reality Orientation and a Program Design for a Geriatric Setting", explores the benefits of reality orientation for elderly individuals experiencing disorientation and confusion. Focused on designing a structured reality orientation program for the Jewish Center for Aged in St. Louis, the study emphasizes the potential for this approach to improve cognitive awareness in institutionalized elderly patients. The program consists of 24-hour orientation by all staff members and scheduled classroom sessions, which reinforce residents' sense of time, place, and identity. Key components include consistent repetition of basic facts, supportive materials like clocks and calendars, and …
Maternal Perception Of The Neonate, Linda Bertucci
Maternal Perception Of The Neonate, Linda Bertucci
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of this study was to determine the maternal perception of the neonate in two groups of patients. The Broussard Neonatal Perception Inventory was used to measure maternal perception. The Inventory was modified by the researcher for use with both primiparae and multiparae. The control group consisted of fifteen mothers receiving traditional postpartum care in the hospital setting. The study group was composed of fifteen mothers who, prior to delivery, chose to participate in an early discharge program. In the early discharge program the patient and her newborn returned home twelve to twenty-four hours after delivery with home follow-up …

Demonstration Of Unique Mycelial Components In Candida Albicans, David Jon Mancuso
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Mycelial (M) and blastopore (B) cell homogenates of Candida albicans strain BJ85 were compared to detect and recover unique M components. Qualitative differences in the protein and lipid content of Mand B homogenates were suggested by discontinuous polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (DPAGE). In addition, a quantitative and possibly qualitative shift in the protein content during germ tube formation was implied by DPAGE. Unique M components were detected using both DPAGE and immunoelectrophoretic (IE) techniques. One unique M component by DPAGE, four by IE, and two by combined DPAGE and IE techniques were suggested. Of these three methods, only DPAGE and the …

Three Linked Enzyme Loci In Fishes: Implications In The Evolution Of Vertebrate Chromosomes, D C Morizot, D A Wright, M J Siciliano
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
A three-point linkage group comprised of loci coding for adenosine deaminase (ADA), glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH), and 6-phospho-gluconate dehydrogenase (6PGD) is described in fish of the genus Xiphophorus (Poeciliidae). The alleles at loci in this group were shown to assort independently from the alleles at three other loci--isocitrate dehydrogenase 1 and 2, and glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase 1. Alleles at the latter three loci also assort independently from each other. Data were obtained by observing the segregation of electrophoretically variant alleles in reciprocal backcross hybrids derived from crosses between either X. helleri guentheri or X. h. strigatus and X. maculatus. The linkage component …
