Cell Mediated Immunity By Cytotoxicity Assay And The Effect Of Corynebacterium Parvum And Radiation On Mice Bearing Herpes-Induced Tumors, Robert B. Stagg
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Cell mediated immune (CMI) cytotoxic reactivity of Balb/c mice against H238 cells, a Herpes simplex virus (HSV) Type 2 - induced sarcoma, was measured by the 125IUdR release assay. The Balb/c mouse response to the growing HSV-induced tumor, treated with radiation and , was measured by survival rate, tumor growth and immune cytotoxicity of spleen and peritoneal exudate cells (PEC) as determined by 125IUdR release assay. Subcutaneous (s.c.) inoculation of 1 x 106 H238 cells (high dose) produced progressive tumor growth while s.c. inoculation of 1 x 104 H238 cells (low dose) produced no tumors. A …

Act Score Declines: Looking For The Source, Thomas Edward Atkin
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
During the last 15 years there has been a well documented decline in achievement test scores. Declines have been documented on both the American College Testing Program (ACT) and the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). An increased interest in t he score declines and their possible explanations has also taken place in the last 10 years. The explanation for the declines fit under four main headings: (1) problems with the tests, (2) changes in the testing population, (3) changes in society, and (4) changes in the schools. The purpose of this study was to begin with the test itself and check …
The Incidence Of Lactose Malabsorption Among Cache Valley Young Adults, Eileen Donna Cowles
The Incidence Of Lactose Malabsorption Among Cache Valley Young Adults, Eileen Donna Cowles
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Twenty-four young adults, ages 18 to 30, from Cache Valley were studied to determine the incidence of lactose malabsorption. Lactose malabsorption was determined by a two-hour oral lactose tolerance test. The criteria for a malabsorber was a flat glucose curve in which there was a rise in serum glucose less than 20 mg. per 100 ml. above the fasting level. Four of the subjects were found to be lactose malabsorbers. The incidence of lactose malabsorption was determined to be 16.67 per cent. A 95 per cent confidence interval for this study indicated that the actual percentage could be expected to …
Relationship Of Environmental Chromium And Zinc Levels To Tissue Chromium And Zinc Levels From Individuals With Maturity Onset Diabetes Mellitus In Selected Watershed Areas Of Utah, Carol H. Williams
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This study was conducted to determine whether a functional relationship exists between human tissue and environmental levels of chromium and/or zinc and in individuals with maturity onset diabetes.
Three counties of Utah were selected as sites:
1. Wayne County, where a State Health Department screening had shown a 12.7 percent incidence of diabetes, and, where there is very little industry, and an assumed low level of environmental chromium and zinc
2. Utah County, where the diabetic screening had shown an 0.75 percent incidence of diabetes and where there is nearby large industry and an assumed higher level of zinc and …

In Vitro Incorporation Of Molybdate Into Demolybdoproteins In Escherichia Coli, Randolph H. Scott, George T. Sperl, John A. Demoss
In Vitro Incorporation Of Molybdate Into Demolybdoproteins In Escherichia Coli, Randolph H. Scott, George T. Sperl, John A. Demoss
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
When Escherichia coli was grown in the presence of tungstate, inactive forms of two molybdoenzymes, nitrate reductase and formate dehydrogenase, accumulated and were converted to their active forms upon incubation of cell suspensions with molybdate and chloramphenicol. The conversion to the active enzymes did not occur in cell extracts. When incubated with [(99)Mo]molybdate and chloramphenicol, the tungstate-grown cells incorporated (99)Mo into protein components which were released from membranes by procedures used to release nitrate reductase and formate dehydrogenase and which migrated with these activities on polyacrylamide gels. Although neither activity was formed during incubation of the crude extract with molybdate, …

CsH~2NO2+.C1 -, m.p. 441-449 K (from ethyl acetate), P212~2 l, a = 7.363 (2), b = 21.824 (6), c = 5.790 (2)/~, Z = 4, D x = 1.354, D m = 1.356 Mg m -3 (flotation: CC14-C6H6). The structure was solved by MULTAN. Full-matrix least-squares refinement converged to R = 0.057 for the R configuration and to R = 0.056 for the S configuration (P < 0.05). This is consistent with spontaneous resolution of the title compound, single crystals of which provided optically active aqueous solutions. A partially occupied oxygen site O(1)' is attributed to the oxidation of the alkyl hydroxyl group to a ketone during the data collection. The CI- is hydrogen bonded to H2(N)554, H3(N)555, and 1-t(O2)655 (2.37, 2-19, and 2.10 A). Both O(1) and 0(2) are internally hydrogen bonded [HI(N)...O(1), 2.41 and H(O1)...O(2) = 2.24 A]. Intramolecular hydrogen bonding may account for the unusual pharmacological properties of this compound in which only the N-C(1)-C(2)-O(1) and the O(1)-C(2)- C(3)-C(4) and O(1)-C(2)-C(3)-C(8) torsion angles (-41, -60, +122 ° ) differ significantly from those of other phenylethanolamines.
Interplanetary Magnetic Field Sector Polarity And Neuropsychiatric Adaption: A Reanalysis, Hans W. Wendt
Interplanetary Magnetic Field Sector Polarity And Neuropsychiatric Adaption: A Reanalysis, Hans W. Wendt
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
Recent Russian studies reported associations between adaptation syndromes and (solar activity-related) interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) sector polarity. Certain ambiguities in the original work suggested some reanalyses, based on the graphs and data made available. Syndrome status exhibited a biphasic (semi annual) trend. It also correlated with specific geomagnetic changes during magnetic storms and possibly after sudden impulses. Moreover, lag effects and higher order interactions were noted among all parameters investigated. The restudy tends to support some of the original findings but also suggests new conclusions regarding potential relationships between geophysical/solar and psychophysiological processes.

Behavioral Pharmacy, C. Anderson Johnson, Albert I. Wertheimer
CGU Faculty Publications and Research
In the text that follows, the development of a coherent and recognizable teaching and research field devoted to the development of the behavioral and social sciences in pharmacy is proposed. It is important for teachers and researchers in this field to establish a common and recognizable identity; to share basic definitions, purposes and criteria; and to develop forums (such as scientific meetings ·and perhaps a journal) for the exchange and nourishment of the behavioral science knowledge that they generate. It is suggested that this field be called behavioral pharmacy. This title is suggested primarily because Of recent· participant agreement and …

Thallium 201 Myocardial Imaging, Michael J. Cowley
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
In recent years technological advancements in nuclear medicine have resulted in increasing interest in the use of radioisotope techniques in the evaluation of cardiac disease, and cardiovascular nuclear medicine has developed into a useful noninvasive tool in clinical cardiology. Myocardial infarct imaging with technetium-99m pyrophosphate has been demonstrated to be a reliable method in the diagnosis of suspected myocardial infarction. Radioisotope cardiac flow studies are useful in the diagnosis and follow-up of congenital heart disease, and gated cardiac blood pool imaging is emerging as an important technique in the evaluation of left ventricular function and ejection fraction. One of the …
