Pigeon Associated People Diseases, Walter Weber
Pigeon Associated People Diseases, Walter Weber
Bird Control Seminars Proceedings
Feral pigeons (Columbia livia) are not harmless birds. Many potential infections of humans silently exist in pigeons which are not apparent. They have the potential for transmission of over 30 diseases to humans plus another ten to domestic animals. Environmental pollution from pigeon droppings is quite evident. Air pollution involves more than noxious gases from automobile exhausts and belching smokestacks. One serious air pollutant is air-borne fungi, which are agents for infectious diseases. There is much information written about the problem, but it remains primarily in the professional journals and technical references, neatly stacked away on library shelves. …

Maternal Vascular Compliance Of Placentas In Rabbits, Gwen Matthews Brownfield
Maternal Vascular Compliance Of Placentas In Rabbits, Gwen Matthews Brownfield
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The incidence of maternal and infant morbidity and mortality has led to a continued study into the physiology and pathophysiology of the placenta, the seat of life for the developing fetus. For several decades investigation has been made into the morphology and exchange functions of the placenta and blood flow in the uterus and placenta, but only recently has compliance begun to have been studied. Recognizing the important part it plays in affecting circulation, compliance has been studied in the fetal circulation of the placenta, the fetal placental vascular bed, and the umbilical vasculature, The purpose of the present study …

The Development Of Techniques For The Enumeration Of Selected Pathogenic Bacteria In Lynnhaven Estuarine Sediments, Mark T. Frank
The Development Of Techniques For The Enumeration Of Selected Pathogenic Bacteria In Lynnhaven Estuarine Sediments, Mark T. Frank
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Methodologies for the improved recovery of selected pathogenic bacteria from estuarine sediments were investigated. Laboratory and field studies were conducted to document the sensitivity of the techniques for isolating Salmonella species, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Vibrio parahaemolyticus. Vibrio parahaemolyticus-like organisms were enriched in a seawater yeast extract broth and isolated from Thiosulfate Citrate Bile Salts Sucrose plated media. Enrichment procedures with and without elevated temperatures and subsequent transfers to selective and differential plated media have been examined for the isolation of Salmonella species and P. aeruginosa. These pathogens were initially assayed for utilizing primary enrichments of asparagine …
The Synthesis And Evaluation Of The Potential Antineoplastic Activity Of The Semicarbazone And The Thiosemicarbazone Derivatives Of The Di-2-Pyridyl Ketone And The 1,8-Diazafluorenone Ring Systems, Adriene Y. Principe
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations
A number of' a-(N)-heterocyclic thiosemicarbazones have been synthesized and evaluated for potential antineoplastic activity since Brockman and colleagues2 reported the antineoplastic activity of' 2-f'ormylpyridine thiosemicarbazone (1). The primary objective of' this research project has been the synthesis and characterization of' the semicarbazone and the thiosemicarbazone derivatives of' the di-2-pyridyl ketone, (9-a) and (9-b), and the 1,8-diazaf'luorenone, (10-a) and (10-b), ring systems, as well as the evaluation of' these compounds for both in vitro and in vivo antineoplastic activity against Ehrlich ascites tumor cells in mice. These studies have suggested that di-2-pyridyl ketone thiosemicarbazone (9-b) is as effective as 2-formylpyridine …

A Method For Evaluating The Platelet Surface Response By Using Electron Microscopy, Jeanne M. Riddle
A Method For Evaluating The Platelet Surface Response By Using Electron Microscopy, Jeanne M. Riddle
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Our method for evaluating the surface response of any given platelet population, which has evolved over the past two decades, provides a measure of both the adhesive and cohesive qualities of platelets. General morphologic features of the adherent, whole platelets can be assessed by transmission electron microscopy, and the results are reproducible when serial samples are collected on normal subjects and patient groups. With this technique, different metabolites and drugs can be combined with platelet populations that are either normoresponsive or hyperactive to determine if these substances trigger or inhibit the platelet response. To date, the results from in vitro …

Functions And Interrelationships Of Leukocytes In Inflammation As Elucidated By The Rebuck Skin Window Technique, Sheikh M. Saeed
Functions And Interrelationships Of Leukocytes In Inflammation As Elucidated By The Rebuck Skin Window Technique, Sheikh M. Saeed
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
This article provides an overview of the functions of human leukocytes in inflammation as elucidated by the Rebuck skin window technique. The migration sequence of various leukocytes into the field of inflammation is described, as well as cytologic, cytochemical, and transformational changes, and the interrelationships of responding leukocytes. Since it was introduced in 1955, the Rebuck skin window technique has provided an excellent means of studying in vivo inflammatory response to different phlogistic agents in normal individuals and in various disease states. This simple technique continues to prove fruitful to further study and to monitoring of many disease states.
Igg Lymphoplasmacytic Intestinal Lymphoma: A Case Report, Heidrun Z. Rotterdam, Sheldon C. Sommers
Igg Lymphoplasmacytic Intestinal Lymphoma: A Case Report, Heidrun Z. Rotterdam, Sheldon C. Sommers
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
We describe a rare case of a localized primary small intestinal lymphoma with features of both the Mediterranean and the Western type. This case demonstrates the need to regard intestinal lymphoma as a spectrum of diseases with the Mediterranean and the Western types at opposite ends and many variants in between. The role of the plasma cell infiltrate has been interpreted as reactive as well as neoplastic. In our case, both lymphocytic and plasmacytic proliferations spread widely in the intestinal submucosa, extended into muscularis propria and subserosal fat, and involved mesenteric lymph nodes. Direct immunofluorescence demonstrated IgG-kappa both in plasma …

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Bovine high molecular weight kininogen (bHMWK) partially corrects the aPTT of Fitzgerald-trait plasma, which is congenitally deficient in HMWK. The relationship between the structure and activity of HMWK was clarified by studying the effects of different fragments of bHMWK on the aPTT of Fitzgerald-trait plasma. The peptides studied, all in equimolar concentrations, were lys-bradykinin-free HMWK, bradyk In In-fragment 1-2-tree HMWK, heavy chain, fragment 1 -2-Hght chain, and light chain. Bradykinin- fragment 1-2-free HMWK, heavy chain, and light chain have little or no correcting activity upon Eitzgeraldtrait plasma aPTT. Fragment 1-2 light chain has the same correcting activity as intact bHMWK, …

Time-Related Changes In Rat Androgen Binding Protein Following A Sterilizing Dose Of 3-Chloro-1, 2-Propanediol, Shirley J. Stein
Masters Theses
Androgen binding protein (ABP) is produced by the Sertoli cell, regulated by FSH and androgens, secreted into the testicular fluid, and transported into the caput epididymis where it is thought to play a role in sperm maturation. In this study, the response of ABP to a lesion created chemically by administration of a single, oral 60 mg/kg dose of alpha-chlorohydrin was examined in ninety day old male rats. Total testicular ABP content increased progressively for four days after treatment and there after declined whereas, epididymal ABP concentration decreased immediately. Serum testosterone showed no significant variation from controls, however, serum FSH …
Operant Control Of Pathological Tongue Thrust, George A. Thompson
Operant Control Of Pathological Tongue Thrust, George A. Thompson
Masters Theses
Pathological tongue thrust (reverse swallowing) has been linked to malocclusion, articulation problems, difficulty in eating, and excessive drooling. Observable tongue thrust in a 10-year-old severely retarded male was modified during lunch using a contingent pushback procedure. Comparison of baseline and treatment data collected by the partial interval method showed a significant reduction in tongue thrust and food fallout and a substantial increase in observed chewing. Results indicated the possibility that an operant approach to treatment can be effective in the modification of this physiological response.

Psychological and physiological effects of nitrous oxide resemble those of eight other drug categories. Lipid solubility or hydrate microcrystal theories correlate behavioral measures with measurable parameters of the molecule N2O. N2O, a spindle poison, halts mitosis in metaphase, producing widespread physiological consequences. N2O affects the microtubules of the spindle in a number of specific ways. Microtubules are utilized in other parts of eukaryotic cells, in a wide variety of functions. In neurons, microtubules build and maintain dendritic sensory processes. Since microtubules are built of two dissimilar proteins, constantly assemble and disassemble, and maintain a …
