An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Premorbid Personality And Depression, William Essenburg
An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Premorbid Personality And Depression, William Essenburg
Dissertations
Depression is a significant mental health problem and has been studied extensively for decades. However, there is still disagreement among clinicians and researchers regarding the causes and psychodynamic processes of depression.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between premorbid personality and depression. Using the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory (MCMI) and the Beck Depression Inventory, personality and depression measures were obtained from a sample of adult psychiatric inpatients during acute and remission phases of their hospitalization.
Results obtained indicated that the MCMI scales intended to measure premorbid personality during periods of acute psychiatric illness were sensitive to …
Recovery Of Helminths From Prehistoric Feces: The Cultural Ecology Of Ancient Parasitism, Karl J. Reinhard
Recovery Of Helminths From Prehistoric Feces: The Cultural Ecology Of Ancient Parasitism, Karl J. Reinhard
Karl Reinhard Publications
Several helminth parasites have been recovered from archaeological sites on the Colorado Plateau. These include Ascaris, Trichuris, Enterobius, Moniliformis, and tapeworms in the families Hymenolepidae and Taeniidae. The recovery of these animals demonstrates that cross-temporal: comparison of parasitism between different prehistoric lifestyles is possible. Such comparison might elucidate the effects of changing lifestyle and subsistance pattern on human parasitism.
Desiccated feces recovered from archaelogical deposits were studied. Hunter-gatherer feces were selected from Dust Devil Cave in southeastern Utah. Agriculturalist feces were studied from Antelope House, a cave site in northeastern Arizona, and Salmon Ruins, a Pueblo …

Sexuality And The Elderly: A Study Of Knowledge And Attitudes Of Health Care Providers In A Nursing Home Setting, Leola Fielder Kirsh
MSN Research Projects
This descriptive study was designed to measure knowledge and attitudes toward sexuality of nursing home health care personnel. A researcher-designed test measuring sexual knowledge and attitudes was administered to 72 nursing home employees. These health care providers included registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and nurse's aides. The researcher hypothesized that there would be no significant correlation between the knowledge and attitude scores of nursing home personnel on a test about sexuality in the elderly. Data were analyzed using the Pearson r_ statistic and the findings led to rejection of the null hypothesis. The researcher concluded that the more knowledge about …
The Rorschach As A Diagnostic Aid In Differentiating The Bipolar Affective Disorder From The Schizophrenic Disorder, Stephen James Newman
The Rorschach As A Diagnostic Aid In Differentiating The Bipolar Affective Disorder From The Schizophrenic Disorder, Stephen James Newman
Dissertations
Misdiagnosis of the bipolar affective disorder (manic type) has profound consequences Including prescription of counterproductive medication, non-aggressive treatment approaches, extended hospitalizations, and poor prognosis (Fleve, 1975). Misdiagnosis Is extensive and has resulted from the tendency to over diagnose schizophrenia (Fleve, 1975), the tendency to equate psychotic symptomatology with schizophrenia (Garvey & Tuason, 1980), the similarity of psychotic symptomatology of the bipolar affective and schizophrenic disorders (American Psychiatric Association, 1980), past confusion regarding diagnostic criteria of the bipolar affective disorder (Spltzer, Williams, & Wynne, 1983), and the absence of psychometric tools to differentiate the bipolar affective and schizophrenic disorders.
The purposes …

High Rates Of Photosynthesis In The Desert Shrub Chrysothamnus Nauseosus Ssp. Albicaulis, Tim D. Davis, N. Sankhla, W. R. Andersen, D. J. Weber, B. N. Smith
Great Basin Naturalist
Basic aspects of photosynthesis were investigated in white rubber rabbitbrush (Chrysothamnus nauseosus (Pallas) Britt. ssp. albicaulis), a common C3 deciduous shrub native to arid regions of the western U.S. Under favorable field conditions, net photosynthesis (Pn) ranged from 36 to 73 mg CO2 · dm −2 · hr−1, which is relatively high for a woody species. The leaves from the actively growing flowering shoots exhibited higher Pn than those on the vegetative shoots. Pn also varied according to the age of the leaves and the location of the plants. P …

The Distribution Of Ceratia Over The Mid-Atlantic Bight, Paul V. Zimba
The Distribution Of Ceratia Over The Mid-Atlantic Bight, Paul V. Zimba
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
The distribution and concentration of Ceratium species, between Cape Hatteras, North Carolina and Long Island, New York ls discussed in relation to specific physical factors and the development of a phytoplankton bloom. The progression of high Ceratium counts Is discussed for the Bight areas of New York, Delaware, and the Chesapeake Bay (April through June). The concentration of Ceratium species declined after June, with highest concentrations along the New York and Delaware coast-lines. Coastal regions (less than 12 km from shore) were associated with high concentrations of several species. Path and regression analysis were used to relate physical factors and …
Current Concepts Of Metabolic Functional Imaging With Positron Emitters, John W. Keyes Jr.
Current Concepts Of Metabolic Functional Imaging With Positron Emitters, John W. Keyes Jr.
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Positron emitting radionuclides have unique properties that make them nearly ideal as radioactive tracers for in vivo metabolic studies. Using positron emission tomographic (PET) scanning and positron-labeled radiopharmaceuticals, one can study local glucose metabolism in tissues, blood flow, oxygen utilization, protein synthesis, and many other functions noninvasively in normal subjects and patients who have various diseases. A review of some of these techniques and the relative advantages and problems associated with the PET approach is presented.

We evaluated the conductances for ion flow across the cellular and paracellular pathways of flounder intestine using microelectrode techniques and ion-replacement studies. Apical membrane conductance properties are dominated by the presence of Ba-sensitive K channels. An elevated mucosal solution K concentration, [K]m, depolarized the apical membrane potential (ψa) and, at [K]m less than 40 mM, the K dependence of ψa was abolished by 1-2 mM mucosal Ba. The basolateral membrane displayed Cl conductance behavior, as evidenced by depolarization of the basolateral membrane potential (ψb) with reduced serosal Cl concentrations, [Cl]s. …

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance: Current And Future Clinical Applications, Jerry W. Froelich, David O. Hearshen, Robert D. Halpert, Suresh Patel
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Nuclear magnetic resonance has evolved from a laboratory analytical tool to become a rapidly developing discipline in clinical medicine. We present a brief historical overview, an introduction to the basic principles of the phenomenon, and a statement of the current status of clinical imaging. We have elected to use the traditional terminology nuclear magnetic resonance to refer to the imaging component of the field rather than the American College of Radiology (ACR) modification magnetic resonance. We do this out of respect for the founders of the field.

We characterized the hyperpolarization of the electrical potential profile of flounder intestinal cells that accompanies inhibition of NaCl cotransport. Several observations indicate that hyperpolarization of ψa and ψb (Δψa,b) results from inhibition of NaCl entry across the apical membrane: (a) the response was elicited by replacement of mucosal solution Cl or Na by nontransported ions, and (b) mucosal bumetanide or serosal cGMP, inhibitors of NaCl influx, elicited Δψa,b and decreased the transepithelial potential (ψt) in parallel. Regardless of initial values, ψa and ψb approached the equilibrium potential for K (EK …

Lymph Flow In Newborn Lambs : Effects Of Change In Osmolality, Debra S. Wickman
Lymph Flow In Newborn Lambs : Effects Of Change In Osmolality, Debra S. Wickman
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Recent investigations have shown that volume loading and alterations in body fluid osmolality cause rapid shifts throughout the body's fluid compartments in the adult dog. The lymph system has been found to be a vital link in the body's ability to compensate for excess fluid, and thus provides a strong defense against edema formation (Brace and Power, 1981; 1983). There have been no previous studies dealing with the investigation of whole-body lymph flow responses in the newborn. The purpose of this experimental research was to perform a systematic study into the whole-body lymph responses of newborn lambs to the particular …
Cryptosporidiosis In The Immunosuppressed Mouse And In Cell Culture, Mercy Prabhu Das
Cryptosporidiosis In The Immunosuppressed Mouse And In Cell Culture, Mercy Prabhu Das
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Cryptosporidiosis is a parasitic infection primarily of animals that has been recently recognized as an important disease in immunocompromised humans. Most cases to date have occurred in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Persons with abnormal humoral or cellular immune function, and even normal subjects, have also been affected.
To determine whether or not mice, when experimentally immunosuppressed, would develop cryptosporidiosis, a test was designed using the AKR/J strain. This strain was selected because, it was previously reported that it was the strain shown to respond most readily to the production of disease caused by the opportunistic protozoan, Pneumocystis carinii …

Aspects Of Cardiovascular Oxygen Transport In Vertebrates, Michael Scott Hedrick
Aspects Of Cardiovascular Oxygen Transport In Vertebrates, Michael Scott Hedrick
Dissertations and Theses
The hematological and rheological characteristics of blood from a number of vertebrates was compared to assess possible species differences in blood viscosity that may influence cardiovascular oxygen transport. Nucleated red blood cells (RBCs) were more viscous (measured by cone-plate viscometry) in comparison with enucleate (mammalian) RBCs at hematocrits greater than 40% when measured at equivalent temperatures. The lower viscosity of enucleate RBCs is attributed to an enhanced deformability of enucleate cells in comparison to nucleated cells.
