Synthesis Of Polyhydroxybenzene Derivatives For Evaluation As Antitumor Agents, Douglas L. Brown
Theses and Dissertations
In order to prepare more effective inhibitors of ribonucleotide reductase a series of 4-substituted and 4,5-disubstituted catechols were synthesized and tested. The derivatives synthesized were also examined for their antitumor activity against L1210 leukemia in mice. A free radical scavenging assay was performed to establish what electronic parameters may govern in vitro and/or in vivo activity. The molecular features of the most potent compounds were compared to the features of the natural substrate of reduction, CDP, UDP, GDP and ADP.
The results obtained from the free radical assay did not show any correlation to the results observed either in vitro …
The Incidence Of Auscultatory Gaps In Hospitalized Adults, Elizabeth Tayloe Courts
The Incidence Of Auscultatory Gaps In Hospitalized Adults, Elizabeth Tayloe Courts
Theses and Dissertations
The study was undertaken to determine the incidence of auscultatory gaps in hospitalized adults and to determine whether a relationship existed between the presence of a gap and the patient's age, sex, race, or medical diagnosis. Blood pressures were taken bilaterally on 120 randomly selected hospitalized adults using the technique recommended by the American Heart Association. None of the subjects in the sample had an auscultatory gap present.

Sensory Function And Gating Of Histaminergic Neuron C2 In Aplysia, Hillel J. Chiel
Sensory Function And Gating Of Histaminergic Neuron C2 In Aplysia, Hillel J. Chiel
Faculty Scholarship
This paper explores the possible sensory function of the identified histaminergic neuron C2. Mechanical stimulation of a narrow region around the mouth of the animal (perioral zone) elicits brief depolarizing potentials in C2. Extracellular recordings from the peripheral axons of C2 indicate that the depolarizing potentials are due to action potentials that are conveyed from the periphery but do not invade the cell body, since they fail at a region with a low safety factor within the cerebral ganglion. These blocked axonal spikes (A- spikes) function as if they were excitatory synaptic inputs to C2, since the synaptic output of …
An Identified Histaminergic Neuron Modulates Feeding Motor Circuitry In Aplysia, Hillel J. Chiel
An Identified Histaminergic Neuron Modulates Feeding Motor Circuitry In Aplysia, Hillel J. Chiel
Faculty Scholarship
An identified histaminergic neuron, C2, in the marine mollusk Aplysia is a complex mechanoafferent which appears to contribute to the maintenance of food arousal by means of its synaptic connections to the metacerebral cell (MCC). Because C2 also has extensive synaptic outputs to neurons other than the MCC, we studied its possible motor functions. We identified several synaptic followers of C2 and found that some were excitatory motor neurons for extrinsic muscles of the buccal mass, while others were modulatory motor neurons that inhibited contractions. In addition, we found that these neurons and other synaptic followers of C2 received powerful …
Orbital Metastasis With Enophthalmos: A Review Of The Literature, David M. Reifler
Orbital Metastasis With Enophthalmos: A Review Of The Literature, David M. Reifler
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Orbital metastasis is associated with enophthalmos in up to one third of all cases. After analyzing the clinical and pathologic features In 25 reported cases of enophthalmic orbital metastasis, the condition was found to almost exclusively affect females, usually in the 60 to 70 age group. The right orbit was the most commonly affected. The primary lesion was located in the breast in 19 (76%) cases and in the abdomen in 6 (24%) cases. In one third of the cases, the manifestations of the orbital metastasis were recognized before diagnosing the primary lesion. The most common presenting features were diplopia …

The Pseudo-Leukocyte-Specific/Nuclear Membrane Antinuclear Antibody Pattern: A Puzzle, Thomas K. Burnham
The Pseudo-Leukocyte-Specific/Nuclear Membrane Antinuclear Antibody Pattern: A Puzzle, Thomas K. Burnham
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
We report an antinuclear antibody (ANA) pattern—the pseudo-leukocyte-specific/nuclear membrane (PLS/NM) ANA pattern—that is puzzling because it usually reacts with only a few cells on human spleen imprints but with most epidermal and numerous dermal nuclei of normal human skin sections. The designation "pseudo-leukocyte-specific" was chosen because it is generally seen in only a few nuclei on human spleen imprints, thereby resembling the true leukocyte-specific ANA pattern. A few small round nuclei fluoresce homogeneously, surrounded by a bright wall, suggesting nuclear membrane (NM) fluorescence. The term "nuclear membrane" was added to the name because the NM appearance is even more prominent …

The Effects Of Cigarette Smoking And Vitamin E On The Morphology Of Mice Testes, Kathleen Grams Hall
The Effects Of Cigarette Smoking And Vitamin E On The Morphology Of Mice Testes, Kathleen Grams Hall
Masters Theses
Epidemiological studies have produced evidence to support an association between cigarette smoking and abnormal sperm morphology. At the least , an effect on sperm morphology indicates the involvement of the testis. Therefore, the research was designed to survey the potential of cigarette smoking for inducing histopathology in the testes of mice, and if there was damage, would vitamin E overcome it.
In the present study the testes of C57BL/6 mive exposed to cigarette smoke and/or vitamin E and 22 control mice were histologically processed. Sections stained with hematoxylin and eosin were assessed for total histopathology and revealed statistically significant differences …
Ua37/13 Plants Used By The Prehistoric Indians Of Kentucky, Chuck Crume
Ua37/13 Plants Used By The Prehistoric Indians Of Kentucky, Chuck Crume
Faculty/Staff Personal Papers
No one knows exactly when the Indians first entered the area we now call Kentucky, but there is an approximation. Archeologists have found evidence of Clovis camps and living sites in the state (9,000 to 12,000 B.P.), This would have been during the Paleo Stage, toward the end of the last ice age. The climate of the area would have been much cooler then. The selection of plants and animals would also have been different than those found in modern times.
Paleo Indians used plants for food, utility and medical uses. It seems that plant use during this period is …

Results Of A Head And Neck Examination: Evaluation Of A Tumor Of The Floor Of The Mouth, Caren M. Barnes, Kenneth W. Nelson, Gary H. Conover
College of Dentistry: Faculty Publications
This article reviews a solitary, well-defined tumor of the floor of the mouth. The tumor presented as a raised, elevated, sessile mass that was freely movable and soft to. the touch. The case illustrates the importance of performing a thorough head and neck examination, and formulating a differential diagnosis if any abnormality is detected. The clinical features, histopathology and responsibility of the dental hygienist in performing a thorough head and neck examination is reviewed.

Concentrations Of Uranium Isotopes In Uranium Millers' And Miners' Tissues, United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission
Health
The alpha-emitting isotopes of uranium and thorium were determined in the lungs of 14 former uranium miners and in soft tissues and bones of three miners and two millers. These radionuclides were also determined in soft tissues and bones of seven normal controls. The average concentrations in pCi/kg wet weight in 17 former miners' lungs are as follows: U-238, 75; U-234, 80; Th-230, 79. Concentrations of each nuclide ranged from 2 to 325 pCi/kg. The average ratio of U-238/U-234 ws 0.92, ranging from 0.64 to 1.06. The mean ratio of Th-230/U-234 was 1.04, ranging from 0.33 to 3.54. The near …

The Effectiveness Of Stimulation Therapy For The Cognitively Impaired Elderly, Sylvia H. Old
Community & Environmental Health Theses & Dissertations
The effectiveness of stimulation therapy for the cognitively impaired elderly living in an institution was assessed. Residents with varying degrees of cognitive impairment were treated with twenty, thirty-minute daily periods of reality orientation, reminiscence, resocialization, remotivation, and other stimulating therapies and were compared with a control group_ receiving no intervention. Treatment effects were assessed with a variety of instruments reflecting functioning across several domains. Included were ability to perform both basic self-care functions and activities of daily living, cognitive performance, affect, and satisfaction with the care received and the living environment in the nursing home. The experimental group was divided …

Biology Faculty Articles
Twenty-seven independent polymorphic loci were detected by two-dimensional electrophoresis (2DE) of serum, erythrocytes, and fibroblasts in two large families and analyzed for linkage to classical genetic markers. We detected seven serum, four erythrocyte, and 17 fibroblast protein loci that exhibited charge variation in these two families and in a sample of unrelated individuals. The genetic basis of protein variants was confirmed by quantitative gene-dosage dependence and by conformance to Mendelian transmission in the two families, except for four rare variants for which transmission analysis was not possible. Linkage analysis demonstrated that each of the variants represent products of independent loci, …
The Relationship Of Vitamins B-6 And B-12 To Plasma Homocysteine Levels In Men At Low- And High-Risk For Coronary Heart Disease, Marlene E. Swift
The Relationship Of Vitamins B-6 And B-12 To Plasma Homocysteine Levels In Men At Low- And High-Risk For Coronary Heart Disease, Marlene E. Swift
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
There is evidence that homocysteine may be a factor in increasing the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD). To explore this relationship further, we assessed the interrelation of dietary vitamins B-6, B-12 and folate, and plasma pyridoxal-5'-phosphate and vitamin B-12 with plasma free and protein-bound homocysteine levels. Fasting blood and three-day dietary records were obtained from nine men low-risk (LR) and five at high-risk (HR) for CHD. The HR mean systolic blood pressure, total cholesterol (TC), and TC/cholesterol ratios were significantly higher than LR levels. Groups were comparable by age, weight, height, skinfolds, exercise, and smoking history. No significant difference …
The Effects Of Exercise On Cognitive Function In The Elderly, Pamela D. Thomas
The Effects Of Exercise On Cognitive Function In The Elderly, Pamela D. Thomas
MSN Research Projects
In order to determine the effect of exercise upon cognition of institutionalized elderly a quasi-experimental research approach was used. A sample of 20 was selected from two long-term care nursing facilities to make an experimental and a control group. The experimental group had a prescribed exercise plan followed by a cognition test while the control group received only the cognition test. The cognition test scores were analyzed using the ^ test statistic with a significance level of 0.05. Analysis of the data led the researcher to fail to reject the null hypothesis; however, a marginally significant trend for the experimental …
The Survival Of Mesophilic And Thermophilic Bacteria Subjected To Uv Irradiation, Sajida A. Shaikh
The Survival Of Mesophilic And Thermophilic Bacteria Subjected To Uv Irradiation, Sajida A. Shaikh
Masters Theses
Survival curves were determined for the mesophile, Bacillus licheniformis and the thermophile, Bacillus stearothermophilus after subjecting the cells to ultraviolet irradiation. Cells were grown at 37°C for the mesophile and at 55°C for the thermophile.
At low UV exposure times, the thermophile was more resistant to UV irradiation (had a better survival rate) than was the case for the mesophile. At higher exposure times, the situation was reversed, the mesophile having a greater survival rate than the thermophile.
The effect of changes in the temperature during irradiation was also determined. Thermophiles were greatly affected by changes in temperature while the …

Identification Of Sequences In The Herpes Simplex Virus Thymidine Kinase Gene Required For Efficient Processing And Polyadenylation., Charles N. Cole, Terryl P. Stacy
Dartmouth Scholarship
The herpes simplex virus (HSV) type 1 thymidine kinase gene (tk) was resected from its 3' end with BAL 31 exonuclease. Two sets of plasmids were isolated that lacked information distal to the two copies of the hexanucleotide 5'-AATAAA-3' located at the 3' end of the HSV tk gene. The presence of a simian virus 40 origin of DNA replication in each plasmid facilitated analysis of patterns of transcription in transfected Cos-1 monkey cells. Transcription analyses were performed with an S1 nuclease protection assay. Efficient processing and polyadenylation at the normal site still occurred when all sequences more than 44 …
