George Snell Oral History, George D. Snell
George Snell Oral History, George D. Snell
Oral History Collection
Susan Mehrtens' Note:
George Snell's quiet voice and calm demeanor contrasted sharply with the background atmosphere of our taping session: constant interruptions from visitors, the telephone and a very solicitous spouse, and, on top of all this, a lengthy thunderstorm. George remained unperturbed, but he may have been distracted, and this may account for the anecdotal thinness of this tape. Despite his c. 40 years at Jax, Snell provides little here of the colorful vignette. He does recall his early days, living in a tent on the Lab grounds, and the locals' referring to the Lab as the "mouse house;" …
Gene Expression During The Latent And Replicative States Of The Epstein-Barr Virus, Ronald John Weigel
Gene Expression During The Latent And Replicative States Of The Epstein-Barr Virus, Ronald John Weigel
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Gene expression of the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) was examined during the latent and lytic viral cycles. During latency the virus expresses two small RNAs (EBERs) and the EB nuclear antigen (EBNA). A gene encoding one peptide of the EBNA complex was mapped using S1 nuclease analysis. EBNA peptide is encoded by a 2028 base exon contained within the EBV Bam HI K fragment; the 3' end of this exon occurs 30 bp after the polyadenylation signal AATAAA and the 5' end occurs within a splice acceptor site. The latent state was disrupted experimentally by treatment with phorbol ester or superinfection …

Descriptive Ethology And Activity Patterns Of Black-Footed Ferrets, Tim W. Clark, Louise Richardson, Steven C. Forrest, Denise E. Casey, Thomas M. Campbell Iii
Great Basin Naturalist Memoirs
Aspects of the aboveground ethology and activity patterns of the black-footed ferrets (Mustela nigipes) are described for a population in northwestern Wyoming as a first step in building a descriptive ethogram and quantification of activity patterns. We observed at least 237 individual ferrets for 208 hr on 441 occasions from 2 December 1981 through 25 September 1984. Mainenance behaviors (locomotion, alert, grooming, and sunning, defecation and urination, digging, and predation) and social behavior (reproduction, ontogeny, maternal, play, agonistic) are described as well as some ferret-human interactions. Ferret vocalizations are subjectively described. We located ferrets during most months including …

Description And History Of The Meeteetse Black-Footed Ferret Environment, Tim W. Clark, Steven C. Forrest, Louise Richardson, Denise E. Casey, Thomas M. Campbell Iii
Great Basin Naturalist Memoirs
The black-footed ferret (Mustela nigripes) occupied area lies in the western Big Horn Basin, Park County, Wyoming. Cody, a nearby town, shows a record high temperature of 40.5 C and a low of -43.3 C, with 173 days each year below 0 C. Area geology is dominated by Absaroka volcanics. Soils are shallow (0.5 m) and underlain by unconsolidated gravels; well-drained, medium-textured clay-loams (ca 1 m in depth); or clays derived from shale parent materials. Vegetation is characterized by a wheatgrass-needlegrass shrubsteppe type (Agropyron/Stipa/Artemisia). Prior to white settlement, the area hosted a diverse large mammal community. …

Manufacture Of White Soft Cheese From Ultrafiltered Whole Milk Retentate, Khalid Mohamed Shammet
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Manufacture of white soft cheese from ultrafiltered whole cows• milk involved acidification of pasteurized homogenized whole milk to pH 6.0 with phosphoric or citric acid. The preacidified milk was ultrafiltered at 54 °C until 60% of original milk weight was removed as permeate, diafiltered with deionized water equal to 38.5% of the original milk and concentrated by UF (4.8 fold) to pre-cheese (38% total solid). The pre-cheese was heated to 76.7°C/16 sec, 71 .l°C/l6 sec (HTST) and 7l.l°C/l5 min (controlled water bath), inoculated with 2% starter culture (Streptococcus cremoris), renneted (10 ml/100 lb retentate) and placed in one …

Magnesium, Copper And Zinc Concentrations In Blood From Children With Diabetes Mellitus, Linda Lowers Jenkins
Magnesium, Copper And Zinc Concentrations In Blood From Children With Diabetes Mellitus, Linda Lowers Jenkins
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations
Trace element levels in blood from diabetic children were investigated and compared to control children. Plasma, erythrocyte, mononuclear and polymorphonuclear cells were analyzed for magnesium, copper, and zinc content. Leukocyte separation was performed by density gradient centrifugation on Ficoll-Hypaque, followed by washing steps to remove platelet contamination and hypotonic lysis to remove red cell contamination. Polarized Zeeman-effect atomic absorption spectroscopy was used for trace metal analysis.
Decreased plasma magnesium levels were observed in the diabetic children. This finding is well documented and probably due to increased urinary magnesium loss from glycosuria. Lymphocyte magnesium levels in the diabetic children were also …
The Effects Of Luteinizing Hormone And Adenosine 3',5'-Cyclic Monophosphate On Phospholipid Metabolism By Luteal Mitochondria, Jim John Sadighian
The Effects Of Luteinizing Hormone And Adenosine 3',5'-Cyclic Monophosphate On Phospholipid Metabolism By Luteal Mitochondria, Jim John Sadighian
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations
Luteinizing hormone (LH) increases intracellular concentrations of adenosine 3', 5 '-cyclic monophosphate and the phosphoinositides, phosphatidylinositol (PI), PI 4'-phosphate (PIP) and PI 4' .5 1 - bispbosphate (PIP2). It is believed that cAMP and the phosphoinositides act concertedly to regulate mitochondrial conversion of cholesterol to pregnenolone. This study examined the effects of LH and N6 ,O2 -dibutyryl cAMP (dbcAMP) on phospholipids metabolism by luteal mitochondria and the influence of dbcAMP and the phosphoinosi tides on mitochondrial steroid production. Mitochondria were isolated from unincubated and incubated luteal tissue by differential centrifugation. Phospholipids were extracted from the mitochondria …

Clinical Effectiveness Of ListerineR And ViadentR Mouthrinses On Bacterial Plaque And Gingivitis, Debra Pizzola Powell
Dental Hygiene Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effects of two commercial mouth rinses, ListerineR and ViadentR, on bacterial plaque and gingivitis. over a sixweek period, 24 adults, ages 18-41, were examined for the amount of bacterial plaque and level of gingivitis using Silness and toe's Plaque Index (PLI) and Gingival Index (GI). At the beginning of each two week period, subjects were examined for the amount of plaque and level of gingivitis and given a different mouthrinse: appointment one--viadentR (mouthrinse A), appointment two--placebo mouthrinse (mouthrinse B), and appointment three--ListerineR (mouthrinse C). Additionally, subjects …

Psychocardiologic Perspectives Of Coronary Artery Disease, Richard Ketai
Psychocardiologic Perspectives Of Coronary Artery Disease, Richard Ketai
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
The importance of mind, emotion, and behavior as they relate to the heart, particularly coronary artery disease, is growing in recognition. A review of the research shows increasingly sophisticated demonstrations of links unifying heart function and mind. "Psychocardiology" would be an appropriate term for the diverse areas of interest which focus on the psychosocial correlates of heart disease. This paper illustrates this concept through a review of psychosocial and behavioral aspects of coronary artery disease.

Medicine, Technology, And Genetic Engineering: Reflections From The Outside, Jeffrey R. Plittman
Medicine, Technology, And Genetic Engineering: Reflections From The Outside, Jeffrey R. Plittman
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Advances in technology are producing many changes in the ways humans view and manage their lives. The refinement of genetic engineering techniques has created vast opportunities for humankind, along with novel problems and dangers. Accordingly, the questions that must be addressed pertain to the nature of life itself. Yet the scientific community can not be given sole discretion In managing todey's technologies. Instead, all segments of society must be Involved In determining how genetic engineering will be used.

Absence Of A Structural Basis For Intracellular Recognition And Differential Localization Of Nuclear And Plasma Membrane-Associated Forms Of Simian Virus 40 Large Tumor Antigen., Donald L. Jarvis, Charles N. Cole, Janet S. Butel
Dartmouth Scholarship
The simian virus 40 large tumor antigen (T-ag) is found in both the nuclei (nT-ag) and plasma membranes (mT-ag) of simian virus 40-infected or -transformed cells. It is not known how newly synthesized T-ag molecules are recognized, sorted, and transported to their ultimate subcellular destinations. One possibility is that these events depend upon structural differences between nT-ag and mT-ag. To test this possibility, we compared the structures of nT-ag and mT-ag from simian virus 40-infected cells. No differences between the two forms of T-ag were detected by migration in polyacrylamide gels, by Staphylococcus aureus V8 partial proteolytic mapping of methionine- …

Biogenesis Of The Platelet Receptor For Fibrinogen: Evidence For Separate Precursors For Glycoproteins Iib And Iiia., Paul F. Bray, Jean-Philippe Rosa, Vishwanath R. Lingappa, Yuet W. Kan, Rodger P. Mcever, Marc A. Shuman
Cardeza Foundation for Hematologic Research
Congenital absence of platelet glycoproteins IIb and IIIa (GPIIb and GPIIIa) results in a severe bleeding disorder characterized by defective platelet aggregation and failure of fibrinogen to bind to platelets. GPIIb is a two-chain protein containing disulfide-linked alpha and beta subunits. GPIIb and GPIIIa are present as a heterodimeric, noncovalent complex in the platelet plasma membrane and function as the fibrinogen receptor. To characterize synthesis of these two proteins, RNA isolated from a human leukemia cell line that contains GPIIb and GPIIIa was translated in a wheat germ cell-free system. Polyclonal antibodies specific for each protein immunoprecipitated distinct [35S]methionine-labeled precursors, …

The Case Against The Use Of Animals In Science, Donald J. Barnes
The Case Against The Use Of Animals In Science, Donald J. Barnes
Experimentation Collection
As a scientist long committed to the understanding, prediction, and control of biological, physiological, and behavioral events, I have no objection to the animal as a legitimate focus of science. As a parent, a son, a sibling, and the proud recipient of unconditional positive regard from a few special people, I am vitally interested in matters of health and in the most ethically efficient use of available resources. As a member of a species which has evolved sufficiently to allow the relatively broad perspective of a "web of life" and at least a rudimentary concept of altruism, I have laboriously …

The Case For The Use Of Animals In Science, James A. Will
Experimentation Collection
Animals are now used extensively in research and teaching, and the appropriateness of their use appears to be questioned. Some people believe that we are in a new era where the animal activists have become much more influential, and that the antagonism between the scientists and these groups is worse than it ever has been. This does not appear to be the case. The preeminence of various influences seems rather cyclic, even perhaps influenced by such things as economic conditions or wars. At present, the question is often asked, "Should we continue to use animals in science?" The real question …
