Medicinal Herbs Of Central Illinois, James E. Hefley Jan 1987

Medicinal Herbs Of Central Illinois, James E. Hefley

Masters Theses

A survey of the medicinal plants of central Illinois was conducted from fall of 1985 to the summer of 1987. This study concentrated on those herbaceous plants which have a scientific basis for their medicinal value. The study range included the following counties: Coles, Moultrie, Shelby, Fayette, Christian, and Montgomery.

In this paper, 58 species were considered, representing 33 families. A description of external morphology is included for each specimen, as well as folknames and habitat preferences. In addition, the medicinal qualities and active constituents are included for each specimen, as well as comments about their scientific and folknames.

Development Of The Analytical Methodology For Pyrimethamine And Its Application To Studies Of Partitioning And Binding In The Subcompartments Of Blood, Anita C. Rudy Jan 1987

Development Of The Analytical Methodology For Pyrimethamine And Its Application To Studies Of Partitioning And Binding In The Subcompartments Of Blood, Anita C. Rudy

Theses and Dissertations

An original HPLC assay was developed for pyrimethamine (PYR) in plasma, RBCs, and buffer for the purpose of studying its plasma protein binding and RBC partitioning.

Equilibrium dialysis (ED) was used to study protein binding. Isotonic phosphate buffer used in ED did not prevent small volume shifts. The pH of the plasma affected the protein binding of PYR although it was not significant for the comparison of binding at pH 7.4 vs. 8.0. PYR at 1000 ng/ml averaged 93.1% bound to plasma proteins. Binding to pure human albumin was 86.5% at lower levels of albumin and PYR (350 ng/ml). There …

Opioid Receptor Effects Of Two Aminotetralin Derivatives In Guinea Pig Ileum Longitudinal Muscle And Mouse Vas Deferens Preparations, Francisca Fatima Matos Jan 1987

Opioid Receptor Effects Of Two Aminotetralin Derivatives In Guinea Pig Ileum Longitudinal Muscle And Mouse Vas Deferens Preparations, Francisca Fatima Matos

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Two substituted analogs of 3-amino-2,2-dimethyltetralin, namely 3-dimethylamino-7-hydroxy-2,2-dimethyl-1-tetralone HBr (J) and 3-dimethylamino-7-hydroxy-2,2-dimethyl-1-tetralol (MRSAL) were evaluated for opioid agonist and antagonist activity using the electrically-stimulated guinea pig ileum longitudinal muscle and mouse vas deferens preparations. The effects of these compounds in these tissues were compared to those induced by several opioid prototype agonists at mu, kappa and delta sites (normorphine, dihydromorphine, ethylketocyclazocine, U-50,488H, beta -endorphin, dynorphin 1-13, leu-enkephalin and DADLE) and one opioid antagonist (naloxone). The results of these experiments demonstrated that compound J inhibited contractions in a concentration-dependent manner as an opioid agonist and its effects were antagonized by naloxone in …

High Pressure Liquid Chromatography Ion Exchange Studies On Bile Relating To The Postmortem Interval, Bertha Louise Martin Jan 1987

High Pressure Liquid Chromatography Ion Exchange Studies On Bile Relating To The Postmortem Interval, Bertha Louise Martin

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

It is the purpose of this, then, to investigate the feasibility of using the changes of concentrations of small iconic decomposition products in bile as indicators of time since death. High pressure liquid chromatography was selected for measurement of these changes.

The Role Of Familial Conflict In The Adaptation To Menarche: Sequential Analysis Of Family Interaction, Grayson N. Holmbeck Jan 1987

The Role Of Familial Conflict In The Adaptation To Menarche: Sequential Analysis Of Family Interaction, Grayson N. Holmbeck

Theses and Dissertations

Past research has suggested that temporary perturbations characterize parent-adolescent relations after the onset of pubertal change. The purpose of this study was to further delineate the characteristics of these disruptions in families with seventh-grade girls. Current operational definitions of family conflict in an observational context are inadequate and a potentially more useful definition was offered: conflict is believed to exist when there is the simultaneous occurrence of opposing interpersonal forces.

Two studies were conducted. A validation study was done to determine the psychosocial correlates of the following conflict variables: frequencies and reciprocal dyadic sequences of interruptions and disagreements. The affective …

A Reclassification Of The Genera Of Scolytidae (Coleoptera), Stephen L. Wood Dec 1986

A Reclassification Of The Genera Of Scolytidae (Coleoptera), Stephen L. Wood

Great Basin Naturalist Memoirs

A taxonomic revision of the genera of Scolytidae (Coleoptera) in the world fauna is presented. Included are 215 valid genera and 273 invalid generic and subgeneric names. The type-species for each genus-group name was examined, including the type-specimen of the type-species in those taxa where a holotype, lectotype, or neotype has been designated—with the exception of four contemporary genera, the type-series of which are lost, and six fossil genera for which no effort was made to locate the types. Taxonomic keys to the families of the Curculionoidea, and to the subfamilies, tribes, and genera of Scolytidae are presented. Descriptions and …

Fine-Structure Analysis Of The Processing And Polyadenylation Region Of The Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 Thymidine Kinase Gene By Using Linker Scanning, Internal Deletion, And Insertion Mutations., Fang Zhang, Roger M. Denome, Charles N. Cole

Dartmouth Scholarship

Most eucaryotic mRNAs are polyadenylated. In higher eucaryotes, the sequence AATAAA is located 7 to 30 base pairs (bp) upstream from the site of processing and polyadenylation and is a critical part of the signal for processing and polyadenylation. Efficient cleavage and polyadenylation also require sequences downstream of polyadenylation sites. The herpes simplex virus type 1 thymidine kinase (tk) gene contains two copies of the AATAAA hexanucleotide and a GT box (18 of 19 consecutive residues are G or T) previously shown to be required for efficient processing and polyadenylation of tk mRNA (C. N. Cole and T. P. Stacy, …

Regulation By Adrenal Corticosteroids Of Sodium And Potassium Transport In Loop Of Henle And Distal Tubule Of Rat Kidney., Bruce A. Stanton

Dartmouth Scholarship

Studies were conducted to examine the effects of adrenalectomy (ADX) and selective, physiological adrenal corticosteroid replacement on sodium and potassium transport by the superficial loop of Henle and distal tubule of rat kidney in vivo. In the loop of Henle, ADX inhibited sodium reabsorption by 33%. Whereas dexamethasone had no effect on reabsorption, aldosterone increased sodium transport to control levels. Thus, physiological levels of mineralocorticoids, but not glucocorticoids, control a fraction of sodium reabsorption in the loop of Henle. ADX also inhibited potassium reabsorption in the loop of Henle. Both dexamethasone and aldosterone reversed the inhibition, although only aldosterone increased …
