The Primary Structure Of Hemoglobins Of The Adult Jaguar (Panthera Onco, Carnivora), Aftab Ahmed, Meeno Jahan, Zafar H. Zaidi, Gerhard Braunitzer, Reinhard Göltenboth
Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
The primary structure of the hemoglobins from Jaguar (Panthera onco) are presented. Electrophoretic separations without and with a dissociating agent revealed the presence of two hemoglobin components, OL2ß\ and a2 02. The separation of the hemoglobin components was achieved by ion-exchange chromatography. The globin chains were separated by ion-exchange chromatography and also by reversed phase HPLC. The amino-acid sequences of the native chains and peptides were determined by liquid-phase and gas-phase sequencing. N-Acetylserine was detected by FAB-mass spectroscopy as N-terminal group of the ßl chain. The sequences are compared with that of human hemoglobin (Hb A).

Theses
The purpose of this culminating project is to address the tremendous scope of drug therapy in the elderly . More specifically, this incorporates a review and discussion of t he problems and special considerations relative to this area of health care,
Within recent years, two significant characteristics of our society have emerged . The first is that we are an aging society. This is readily demonstrated by demographic statistics which reveal a growth rate of from three million in 1900 to twenty-eight million at present in those sixty- five years and over. The second characteristic is that we are a …

Symptomatology Of Bulimia: Five Case Studies, Michael J. Sharamitaro
Theses
This study consisted of (a) a review of the research literature on bulimia, (b) five case studies of bulimic individuals, and (c) an analysis and comparison of the symptomatologic themes reported in the literature on bulimia and the salient characteristics of the bulimic individuals examined through the case studies. In the review of the research literature, attention was focused on the sociocultural, biological, and psychological factors that may contribute to the etiology of bulimia . The review also identified several symptoms or themes that are associated with bulimia. These were alienation from feelings, powerlessness, need for approval, control, avoidance of …
Genetic And Environmental Factors In Obesity: Case Studies, Bonnie Kathleen Hargis
Genetic And Environmental Factors In Obesity: Case Studies, Bonnie Kathleen Hargis
Theses
This research project consisted of seven case studies of obese women who sought treatment for their weight problems at a hospital weight loss clinic and fitness center. The purpose of these studies was to consider the extent to which heredity and /or environmental factors contributed to these subjects being overweight. The case studies suggested that six of the subjects' overweight. problems were mainly caused by environmental factors. It was determined that one subject was overweight largely due to genetic predisposition, but that environmental factors also played a role. The two primary environmental factors appeared to be eating large portions of …

Oral Health Status, Perceived And Evaluated Treatment Needs, And Utilization Of Dental Services By Well Elderly Attending Polk County Senior Centers, Sandra Kaye Leggett
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The purpose of this study was to identify the following characteristics of well elderly attending Polk County, Iowa senior centers: (a) oral health status, (b) perceived and evaluated treatment needs, and (c) utilization of dental services. An oral health screening of 176 senior center participants age 60 and older was used to assess each of the variables. Data suggested there was an increased rate of oral mucosal lesions and edentulousness (without teeth) for this population when compared to Iowans of similar age and oral health status. There was a perceived dental need by 60% of the population, and an evaluated …

Biochemical And Histological Evaluation Of Normal Human Epidermis Vs Cultured Human Epidermis, Ngo Thi Bich Lien
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Cultured human keratinocytes were grown in vitro for transplantation purposes in case of severe burns. Single keratinocytes were harvested from human epidermis and grown in culture flasks such that multilayered sheets of keratinocyte cells were harvestable in approximately three weeks. In order to evaluate cultured epidermis for equivalency with normal human epidermis, biochemical and histological studies were performed. Thin sections of cultured epidermis were shown to be composed of cells that had undergone developmental differentiation, but not terminal differentiation. Biochemical analyses of keratin and prekeratin proteins isolated from cultured epidermis indicated that cultured keratinocytes have electrophoretic patterns similar to keratins/prekeratins …

Pubertal Status And Psychosocial Development: Findings From The Early Adolescence Study, Lisa J. Crockett, Anne C. Petersen
Pubertal Status And Psychosocial Development: Findings From The Early Adolescence Study, Lisa J. Crockett, Anne C. Petersen
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Beginning in 1978, we have conducted a longitudinal study of early adolescent development. A major objective of this research has been to examine the influence of pubertal changes on other aspects of development during this period. With regard to pubertal effects we wished to address two major questions. First, what aspects of behavior seem to be affected by pubertal development? (In other words, are pubertal effects pervasive or relatively circumscribed, and if they are circumscribed, which aspects of behavior are involved?) Second, how does pubertal change exert an influence--does it operate directly on specific aspects of behavior and performance (for …

Influence Of Stellate Ganglion Stimulation On Morphology Of Alveolar Type Ii Cells, Lori Ann Alexander
Influence Of Stellate Ganglion Stimulation On Morphology Of Alveolar Type Ii Cells, Lori Ann Alexander
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
This research provides ultrastructural information regarding pulmonary surfactant secretion from stimulation of adrenergic pathways to the lung via the stellate ganglion. This information will help clarify the important role of the sympathetic nervous system in surfactant disorders. It also provides insight into sympathetic mechanisms causing surfactant derangement in adult and infant respiratory distress syndromes (RDS). Basic cellular mechanisms of surfactant metabolism, including synthesis and packaging in lamellar bodies, were studied. Results shed light on these basic processes of lung cell function.
The results of this study provide new avenues for studying a problem in health care that has long resisted …

Helminth Remains From Prehistoric Indian Coprolites On The Colorado Plateau, Karl J. Reinhard, Richard H. Hevly, Glenn A. Anderson
Karl Reinhard Publications
Examination of coprolites excavated from archaeological sites in the Americas demonstrates excellent preservation of helminth eggs and, in some cases, larvae. To gain an understanding of helminth parasitism in prehistory on the Colorado Plateau of Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah, 319 coprolites from 5 archaeological sites were analyzed. Helminth eggs and larvae were recovered after the coprolites were rehydrated, screened, and sedimented. At a sixth site, soils excavated from 5 rooms used as latrine areas were processed with palynological techniques. The results indicate that all but 1 of the prehistoric populations examined were infected with intestinal worms. The helminths implicated …

The Effects Of Xanthine Analogs On Neonatal Rat And Adult Mouse Respiration, Susan M. Reynolds
The Effects Of Xanthine Analogs On Neonatal Rat And Adult Mouse Respiration, Susan M. Reynolds
Masters Theses
Apnea, a prolonged cessation of breathing, is commonly seen in premature infants. This condition, in its severest form, can be lethal and is a suspected cause of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Sometimes referred to as apnea of prematurity, recurrent apnea is presently being treated with respiratory stimulants known as methylxanthines (MX) such as theophylline and caffeine. The benefits of MXs are accompanied by central nervous system stimulation and cardiostimulation which may be detrimental to a premature infant. Theophylline (1,3-diMX) has been shown to produce some of its effects by antagonizing endogenous adenosine. Another xanthine, enprofylline (3-propylxanthine), is presently being …
