Pregnancy Outcome In Military And Civilian Women, Karen Messersmith Heroman Dnsc
Pregnancy Outcome In Military And Civilian Women, Karen Messersmith Heroman Dnsc
Dissertations
Low birth weight and prematurity account for much of the morbidity and mortality in the neonatal period as well as for much of the cost in newborn care. The purpose of this investigation was to determine if two groups of pregnant women, military enlisted and civilian dependents, differed in selected risk factors (smoking, alcohol consumption, weight gain, prenatal care, work patterns, life stress, and social support) or in pregnancy outcome (infant birth weight and gestational age). The House (1981) theory of stress, social support, and health served as the framework for this study. Since little has been published on pregnancy …

Calcium/Diacylglycerol-Dependent Protein Phosphorylation In The Nervous System, Katherine Ann Albert
Calcium/Diacylglycerol-Dependent Protein Phosphorylation In The Nervous System, Katherine Ann Albert
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Calcium/diacylglycerol-dependent protein kinase, most often referred to as protein kinase C, is of interest to research groups across many scientific disciplines for two major reasons. First, protein kinase C is of general importance in signal transduction because its second messenger activator, diacylglycerol, is generated by phosphoinositide metabolism in response to a host of biologically active molecules. Second, protein kinase C has been identified as the cellular receptor for tumor-promoting phorbol esters. Protein kinase C is of particular interest to neuroscientists because its highest activity is in the nervous system. The studies described in this dissertation were undertaken to analyze the …

Effects Of Caffeine Consumption On Cardiovascular Reactivity To Social Stress, Suzanne L. Keller
Effects Of Caffeine Consumption On Cardiovascular Reactivity To Social Stress, Suzanne L. Keller
Masters Theses
Several risk factors have been linked to cardiovascular diseases; among them are exposure to psychological stressors and caffeine consumption.
The objective of this study was to examine the effects of caffeine consumption on cardiovascular reactivity to role play simulations of social stressors. A double-blind alternating treatment design was employed. Eight subjects (five female and three male) received either caffeine-containing or placebo beverages. Each subject received four samples of each beverage over a total of eight sessions. The results include: (a) stressors increased systolic and diastolic blood pressure along with heart rate in baseline, placebo and drug conditions; (b) caffeine produced …
Community Mental Health: A View From American History, Mary Ann Jimenez
Community Mental Health: A View From American History, Mary Ann Jimenez
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The limitations of the movement for deinstitutionalization of the chronically mentally disordered have been the subject of a repeated series of investigations and analyses in the last 10 years. These critiques can be summed up in the undeniable observation that the chronically mentally disordered have by and large failed to benefit from deinstitutionalization in the ways that the original advocates and planners of this policy had hoped. The promise of community mental health, at least as articulated by the scores of witnesses before Congressional committees in the early 1960's, has not been realized for this population.
Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of An Educational Presentation In Increasing Chemically Dependent Males’ Report Of Sexual Abuse, Linda L. Hand
Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of An Educational Presentation In Increasing Chemically Dependent Males’ Report Of Sexual Abuse, Linda L. Hand
Masters Theses
Research has demonstrated several factors among sexually abused males such as males sexually abused as children becoming adult sexual abusers; one in four males reporting sexual abuse; and adult emotional trauma, drug abuse, and sexual dysfunction. To break this abuse pattern, we need to focus on increasing males' reports of sexual abuse and initiating treatment.
The present study evaluated the effectiveness of an oral educational presentation in increasing males' reports of sexual abuse. It also sought prevalence information and treatment needs. Subjects were 51 males from three chemical dependency treatment centers. One control and four experimental groups were used. The …
The Prenatal Development Of The "Synaptic" Structures In The Guinea Pig Pineal Gland, Zhongrong Luo
The Prenatal Development Of The "Synaptic" Structures In The Guinea Pig Pineal Gland, Zhongrong Luo
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Pineal "synaptic" ribbons are a heterogeneous population of organelles. In addition to "synaptic" ribbons (SR) sensu stricto, which are electron-dense rods, "synaptic" spherules (SS) and intermediate forms (IMF) are present. The SS are electron-dense spherical structures, the diameter of which is two to three times the width of the SR. The IMF appear as irregularly formed structures. The SR, SS and IMF are surrounded by electron-lucent vesicles. Their function and origin are unknown and also a knowledge of their prenatal development is lacking. In order to gain an insight into the development of the "synaptic structures, the pineal glands …

Dietary And Hormonal Evaluation Of Men At Risk For Prostate Cancer, Donald J. Pusateri
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Relationships between dietary nutrients and plasma and fecal estrone, estradiol-17β, testosterone, and plasma prolactin levels were studied in young Seventh-day Adventist men: 18 nonvegetarians (NV), 20 lacto-ovovegetarians (LOV), and 15 vegans (V). Blood samples and 3 d dietary records were obtained. Contemporaneously collected diet composites and stool samples were analyzed for fiber. The vegetarians consumed significantly more fiber than the omnivores, while NVs and LOVs consumed more saturated fat than the Vs. Although plasma steroid hormone status did not differ, the Vs had significantly higher fecal estrogen levels than the NVs or LOVs. Plasma prolactin levels were significantly higher in …

The Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor From Prostate Cells Is Dephosphorylated By A Prostate-Specific Phosphotyrosyl Phosphatase., Ming-Fong Lin, Gail M. Clinton
Journal Articles: Biochemistry & Molecular Biology
Human prostatic acid phosphatase (PAcP) has been found to have phosphotyrosyl-protein phosphatase activity (H. C. Li, J. Chernoff, L. B. Chen, and A. Kirschonbaun, Eur. J. Biochem. 138:45-51, 1984; M.-F. Lin and G. M. Clinton, Biochem. J. 235:351-357, 1986) and has been suggested to negatively regulate phosphotyrosine levels, at least in part, by inhibition of tyrosine protein kinase activity (M.-F. Lin and G. M. Clinton, Adv. Protein Phosphatases 4:199-228, 1987; M.-F. Lin, C. L. Lee, and G. M. Clinton, Mol. Cell. Biol. 6:4753-4757, 1986). We investigated the molecular interaction of PAcP with a specific tyrosine kinase, the epidermal growth factor …

Relationship Of Spiritual Well-Being To Psychological Well-Being In Bereaved Parents, Marcia E. Hodges
MSN Research Projects
This descriptive correlational study assessed the perceived spiritual and psychological well-being of bereaved parents. Spiritual well-being was measured by the Spiritual Well-Being Scale (SWB) and psychological well-being was measured by the Psychological General Well-Being (PGWB) Index. The sample consisted of 30 participants from three bereaved parent support groups located in North Alabama. The research hypothesis stated there would be a positive correlation between spiritual well-being and psychological well-being in bereaved parents. Findings revealed a positive correlation between spiritual well-being and psychological well-being in bereaved parents = .77, p_ = .000). Additional findings revealed men tended to report higher subjective spiritual …
The Psychological Needs Of Sex Offenders Of Children As Measured By The Personality Research Form, Shirley Anne Miller
The Psychological Needs Of Sex Offenders Of Children As Measured By The Personality Research Form, Shirley Anne Miller
Dissertations
Major contributors in the field of child sexual abuse have agreed that sex offenders who sexually abuse children are not primarily motivated by sexual desire and have proposed that the simultaneous satisfaction of a number of psychological needs is the prominent motivation of sex offenders of children. Few attempts have been made to empirically validate the clinical and theoretical impressions regarding the psychological needs of this group using psychological measures designed to assess needs or motives.
The purpose of this study was to investigate to what extent the assumptions about the psychological needs of sex offenders of children would be …

The Relations Of Pubertal Status To Intrapersonal Changes In Young Adolescents, Lorah D. Dorn, Lisa J. Crockett, Anne C. Petersen
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relations between pubertal development and adolescents’ perceptions of their physical and emotional states. Two research questions were posed: (a) What are the effects of pubertal status upon satisfaction with appearance and mood states of the adolescent; and, (b) What are the patterns of those pubertal effects in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades? A nonclinical group of adolescents (N = 253) was selected from two cohorts and was followed from sixth through eighth grade. Multiple measures were used to assess satisfaction with appearance and mood states. Significant multivariate findings were limited to …

Patterns Of Polyadenylation Site Selection In Gene Constructs Containing Multiple Polyadenylation Signals., Roger Denome, Charles Cole
Patterns Of Polyadenylation Site Selection In Gene Constructs Containing Multiple Polyadenylation Signals., Roger Denome, Charles Cole
Dartmouth Scholarship
We have constructed a series of plasmids containing multiple polyadenylation signals downstream of the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV) thymidine kinase (tk)-coding region. The signals used were from the simian virus 40 (SV40) late gene, the HSV tk gene, and an AATAAA-containing segment of the SV40 early region. This last fragment signals polyadenylation poorly in our constructs and not at all during SV40 infection. All plasmids contained the SV40 origin of replication. Plasmids were transfected into Cos-1 cells; after 48 h, cytoplasmic RNA was isolated and the quantity and 3'-end structure of tk mRNAs was analyzed by using S1 …

The Synthesis And Evaluation Of 5-Phenyloxazolidines As Potential Cardiovascular Drugs, Tammy C. Wang
The Synthesis And Evaluation Of 5-Phenyloxazolidines As Potential Cardiovascular Drugs, Tammy C. Wang
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations
Drugs such as adrenoceptor antagonists and certain centrally acting agents are known to lower blood pressure and thus serve as clinically useful antihypertensive agents. Norepinephrine 4, a natural ∝-adrenoceptor agonist, is the major agent associated with increased blood pressure in the periphery. Based on a careful structure-activity comparison, a series of substituted oxazolidines, 20, 21, 22 and 23, have been designed as possible antihypertensive candidates. Specifically, 22 and 23 have been synthesized to serve as potential norepinephrine antagonists.
Preliminary evaluation of these compounds indicated that they were not antihypertensive in nature. The more active compound, 23, …

A Method For The Large Scale Purification Of Hcg (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) From The Urine Of Pregnant Women, Chun-Shyan Kuo
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations
A large scale preparation of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) from the urine of pregnant women was accomplished by using kaolin adsorption, NH4OH extraction and DEAE-cellulose ion exchange. A recovery about 81% of HCG and a specific activity in the 2,000-3,000 IU/mg range was achieved using this purification method.
Two HCG activity fractions, HCG I & HCG II, were isolated from DEAE-cellulose chromatography by a stepwise sodium chloride gradient elution. HCG I was eluted at 0.01-0.02 M NaCl while HCG II was eluted at 0.12-0.02 M NaCl.
The differences between HCG I and HCG II have been studied. The …
