Enhanced Renal Sympathetic And Cardiovascular Responses To Substance P In Hypertension, Gregory W. Lindsay Dec 1993

Enhanced Renal Sympathetic And Cardiovascular Responses To Substance P In Hypertension, Gregory W. Lindsay

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Blood pressure, heart rate, and renal sympathetic nerve responses were measured in 9-13 week old male spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and compared to those in age and sex-matched Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats following intravenous injection of the neuropeptide substance P (SP), the nicotinic stimulant 1,1-dimethyl-4-phenylpiperazinium (DMPP), and the adrenoceptor stimulant norepinephrine (NE). Charles River Sprague-Dawley (CD) rats were used in some studies to develop methodologies. Measurements were made in control rats and also following sinoaortic denervation, pithing, ganglion blockade, or adrenoceptor blockade. Responses were evaluated in order to determine if ganglion stimulation by SP was enhanced in SHR compared to WKY …

DNA sequence analysis revealed that bovine CRP cDNA has 57 bp coded for signal peptide of 19 amino acid and 618 bp for mature protein of 206 amino acid residues. The first and the last amino acid residues of the mature protein, deduced from its DNA sequence was found to be glutamine and tryptophan, …

The Nuclear Contamination Of Kazakhstan, Rebecca Marie Matter Dec 1993

The Nuclear Contamination Of Kazakhstan, Rebecca Marie Matter

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

This thesis studies the radioactive contamination of Kazakhstan's environment, concentrating on the period between February 1989 and January 1993. For each type of nuclear degradation in Kazakhstan the thesis asks the questions: what is its cause and extent, what are its consequences for humans, and what are the human responses. The main causes of Kazakhstan's nuclear devastation are atomic weapons' tests, uranium mining, manufacturing of uranium fuel, and the operation of a fast breeder reactor power generator unit. The amount of radioactive contamination is colossal. The consequences for the health of the population, especially at Semey, are severe. The human …

Validation Of A Bag Sampling Method For 1,3-Butadiene, Lori Eckenrode Dec 1993

Validation Of A Bag Sampling Method For 1,3-Butadiene, Lori Eckenrode

Community & Environmental Health Theses & Dissertations

At this time there is no NIOSH approved means for bag sampling 1,3-butadiene. An attempt was made to use the application of cold (0°F) to inhibit the reactivity of the gas prior to analysis. The State of California Air Resources Board has an approved method for the gas chromatographic analysis of 1,3-butadiene from stationary sources. The method was utilized in the application of industrial hygiene monitoring of affected workers. The application of cold was found to be ineffective at inhibiting the highly reactive nature of 1,3-butadiene. Analyte losses were too great to classify the method as an accurate measure of …

Analysis And Evaluation Of The Workplace Exposure Assessment Workbook Developed By Keith Tait Including Some Recommended Revisions, Lisa Hebberd Oct 1993

Analysis And Evaluation Of The Workplace Exposure Assessment Workbook Developed By Keith Tait Including Some Recommended Revisions, Lisa Hebberd

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Some risk due to the contamination of workplace environments is an inevitable part of human lives. These risks can often be reduced by improving the control of environmental pollution in the workplace. An extremely important challenge for any industry is to develop a mechanism to identify acceptable levels of safety, or "acceptable risk" in the workplace for specific situations, and to assure adequate quality control over measured or calculated exposure concentrations and their possible contributions to adverse health effects.

Responses To Dissatisfaction In Psychotheraphy: The Influence Of Prior Satisfaction, Perceptions Of Problem Severity And Attachment Style, Christopher C. Read Oct 1993

Responses To Dissatisfaction In Psychotheraphy: The Influence Of Prior Satisfaction, Perceptions Of Problem Severity And Attachment Style, Christopher C. Read

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

This study examined the influence of prior satisfaction, perceptions of problem severity, and attachment style in determining Rusbult's Exit, Voice, Loyalty, and Neglect responses to dissatisfying events depicted in a psychotherapy simulation. Constructive responses to therapy dissatisfaction (i.e., Voice and Loyalty) were positively related to prior satisfaction with the therapist and negatively related to perceptions of problem severity. Destructive responses (i.e., Exit and Neglect) were negatively related to prior satisfaction and positively related to problem severity. Attachment style was associated with individual differences in approaches to resolving conflict, but it was not consistently related to Exit, Voice, Loyalty, and Neglect …

Pregnancy Prevention In Early Adolescence: A Developmental Perspective, Lisa J. Crockett, Joanne S. Chopak Sep 1993

Pregnancy Prevention In Early Adolescence: A Developmental Perspective, Lisa J. Crockett, Joanne S. Chopak

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Although there is widespread interest in preventing teenage pregnancy, few interventions have been directed toward young adolescents. In part this neglect is understandable because adolescents under age 15 account for only a small percentage of teenage pregnancies (Pittman & Adams, 1988). At the same time, the lack of attention to younger adolescents is unfortunate on several counts. First, an increasing number of young adolescents are at risk. Rates of sexual activity have been rising in this group (Hofferth, Kahn, & Baldwin, 1987) and, because young adolescents are typically not consistent or effective contraceptive users, an increasing number of girls are …

Father’S Presence And Young Children’S Behavioral And Cognitive Adjustment, Lisa J. Crockett, David J. Eggebeen, Alan J. Hawkins Sep 1993

Father’S Presence And Young Children’S Behavioral And Cognitive Adjustment, Lisa J. Crockett, David J. Eggebeen, Alan J. Hawkins

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The impact of fathers on the development and well-being of their children has been the focus of much recent research and debate (e.g., Furstenberg, 1988; Hawkins & Eggebeen, 1991; Lamb, 1987). Traditionally, fathers have been assumed to play an important role in the socialization of their children and, consequently, father-absence has been hypothesized to result in a variety of cognitive and psychosocial vulnerabilities. The need to understand the influence of fathers becomes especially acute at a time when high rates of divorce and nonmarital childbearing lead to the prediction that the majority of children will experience some period of father-absence …

Evidence For A Second Type Of Fibril Branch Point In Fibrin Polymer Networks, The Trimolecular Junction, Michael W. Mosesson, James P. Diorio, Kevin R. Siebenlist, Joseph S. Wall, James F. Hainfeld Sep 1993

Evidence For A Second Type Of Fibril Branch Point In Fibrin Polymer Networks, The Trimolecular Junction, Michael W. Mosesson, James P. Diorio, Kevin R. Siebenlist, Joseph S. Wall, James F. Hainfeld

Biomedical Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Fibrin molecules polymerize to double-stranded fibrils by intermolecular end-to-middle domain pairing of complementary polymerization sites, accompanied by fibril branching to form a clot network. Mass/length measurements on scanning transmission electron microscopic images of fibrils comprising branch points showed two types of junctions. Tetramolecular junctions occur when two fibrils converge, creating a third branch with twice the mass/length of its constituents. Newly recognized trimolecular junctions have three fibril branches of equal mass/length, and occur when an extraneous fibrin molecule initiates branching in a propagating fibril by bridging across two unpaired complementary polymerization sites. When trimolecular junctions predominate, clots exhibit nearly perfect …

Sds Non-Acrylamide Polymeric Gel-Filled Capillary Electrophoresis For Molecular Size Separation Of Protein, Devon Andres Aug 1993

Sds Non-Acrylamide Polymeric Gel-Filled Capillary Electrophoresis For Molecular Size Separation Of Protein, Devon Andres

Honors Theses

Sodium dodecyl sulfide (SDS) non-acrylamide gel-filled capillary columns are a new technology being used for analysis and separation of biotechnology-derived proteins. This research was to compare this new technology to the current methods of SDS polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and high-performance size-exclusion chromatography (HPSEC). The molecular mass of four different recombinant proteins were determined by two commercialized SDS non-acrylamide gel-filled capillary columns, SDS-PAGE, and HPSEC. The data obtained showed that the SDS non-acrylamide gel-filled capillary columns were compatible with the SDS-PAGE technique for molecular mass determination. HPSEC was shown to be unreliable for molecular weight determination. SDS non-acrylamide gel-filled capillary …

The Acute Effect Of Aerobic Exercise On Anxiety Levels, Toni Devolder Aug 1993

The Acute Effect Of Aerobic Exercise On Anxiety Levels, Toni Devolder

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The present study sought to determine whether or not state anxiety levels were significantly reduced when individuals participated in aerobic dance workouts of 15 minutes and 30 minutes. Undergraduate university students and faculty enrolled in an aerobic dance class were volunteers in this study. As hypothesized, subjects in the aerobic dance classes did reduce anxiety acutely following both their 15 minute and 30 minute workout as assessed by the STAI (Y-Form State Anxiety). Thus, results indicate that state anxiety may be reduced through aerobic dance with similar situations and individuals. In addition, the study also looked at the posttest state …

Aerotaxis In Bacillus Subtilis, Laurence Samuel Wong Aug 1993

Aerotaxis In Bacillus Subtilis, Laurence Samuel Wong

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

B. subtilis, like Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium, responded to a step increase in oxygen concentration by swimming smoothly (~ 35 s duration) and to a decrease in oxygen by tumbling. In a spatial gradient of oxygen in liquid media, a band of cells congregated near the air interface. Aerotaxis required a functioning respiratory chain. Adaptation of B. subtilis, E. coli and S. typhimurium to media containing amino acids requires methylation of receptors/methyl-accepting chemotaxis proteins. Adaptation to oxygen and phosphotransferase sugar substrates in B. subtilis was dependent on methylation, unlike similar adaptation in E. coli and S. typhimurium. …

Molecular Cloning Of Infectious Ecotropic Murine Leukemia Virus Ak7 From An Emv-14-Positive Akxl-5 Mouse And The Resistance Of Ak7 To Recognition By Cytotoxic T Lymphocytes., Hillary D. White, William R. Green, Nuria R. Giné Aug 1993

Giné

Dartmouth Scholarship

The AKXL-5 recombinant inbred mouse strain is positive for the endogenous ecotropic murine leukemia virus emv-14, the only emv present in its germ line. emv-14 is of particular interest because spleen cells expressing emv-14 virus escape recognition by anti-AKR/Gross virus-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes. We report here the isolation and characterization of a replication-competent emv clone, pAK7, derived from an AKXL-5 mouse. This clone is novel in that it encodes a variant ecotropic murine leukemia virus that, when expressed in SC.Kb target cells, fails to be recognized efficiently by anti-AKR/Gross virus cytotoxic T lymphocytes. The pAK7 clone can therefore be used …

Perceptions Of Nurse Practitioners Regarding Expanded Practice In The Emergency Department, Donnie Scoggin

MSN Research Projects

Nurse practitioners have been in collaboration with physicians for several years. However, there is only a small percent who work in the emergency department. Due to an increasing population seeking primary care in the emergency department, the purpose of this research study was to identify the perceptions of nurse practitioners regarding the expanded practice in the emergency department. King's Theory of Goal Attainment was utilized as the theoretical framework for the study. The research question for this study was what are the perceptions of nurse practitioners regarding the role of expanded practice in the emergency department? The Scoggin Task Checklist …

The Relationship Between Perceived Control Of Health In Older Adolescents And Their Likelihood Of Engaging In Health-Promoting Behavior: A Replication, Annette Amos Williams Aug 1993

The Relationship Between Perceived Control Of Health In Older Adolescents And Their Likelihood Of Engaging In Health-Promoting Behavior: A Replication, Annette Amos Williams

MSN Research Projects

This correlational study was designed to describe the relationship between perceived control of health in older adolescents between the ages of 2 0 and 21 years and the likelihood of engaging in health-promoting behaviors. This study was a replication of a study conducted by Mitchell (1987) with adolescents between the ages of 16 and 19 years. The theoretical framework for the study was predicated on Pender's Health Promotion Model (Pender & Pender, 1986) which propositions that cognitive/perceptual and modifying constituents stimulate an individual's likelihood of engaging in health-promoting behaviors. Antecedent researchers have established that cognitive/perceptual components such as locus of …
