United States Public Health Resources

Evidence from scores of observational studies from many parts of the world have demonstrated an association between elevated blood total homocysteine levels and the risk of cardiovascular disease, peripheral vascular disease, and stroke. These conditions are more prevalent in males than in females in virtually all populations studied, and their prevalence increases with advancing age. A much smaller body of data exists that describes an increasing tendency to higher homocysteine levels with increasing age.

There have been no previous reports of blood homocysteine levels measured in a cross-sectional sample throughout the age spectrum from childhood through the elderly. However, the …

Evidence continues to confirm that periconceptional ingestion of folic acid can prevent neural tube defects, although the basis of this prevention has been unclear. To further elucidate the mechanism by which this occurs, blood samples were collected from more than 50,000 pregnant women and the samples analyzed for red cell folate, plasma folate, plasma vitamin B12, and plasma homocysteine levels. Based on the results, it appears that the beneficial effect of folic acid is in overcoming a metabolic block in a folatedependent enzyme or transport process. It is likely that methionine synthase may be directly or indirectly involved.

The neural …

A Characterization Of Early B-Lymphopoiesis: The Differentiation Of Lymphohemopoietic And Early Committed B-Lymphoid Progenitors, Timothy C. Ball Jan 1997

A Characterization Of Early B-Lymphopoiesis: The Differentiation Of Lymphohemopoietic And Early Committed B-Lymphoid Progenitors, Timothy C. Ball

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Studies of B-lymphopoiesis have long been hindered by the lack of assays capable of supporting the differentiation and identification of lymphohemopoietic and early committed B-lymphoid progenitors. The clonal identification of cell-cycle dormant lymphohemopoietic progenitors from mice treated with 5 flurouracil (5-FU) became possible with the development of the two-step assay for lymphohemopoietic progenitors. Studies presented in this dissertation are centered around elucidation of the processes of differentiation of lymphohemopoietic progenitors in an attempt to determine the sequence of events occurring in divergence of the B-lymphoid and myeloid lineages. To address this question a single-step assay capable of supporting the differentiation …

Regulation Of The Ncx1 Gene In The Normal And Hypertrophied Myocardium, Kimberly Victoria Barnes Jan 1997

Regulation Of The Ncx1 Gene In The Normal And Hypertrophied Myocardium, Kimberly Victoria Barnes

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

The sodium-calcium exchanger (NCX1) plays a major role in calcium efflux, and therefore, in calcium homeostasis in the heart. The exchanger mRNA and protein is rapidly upregulated within one hour of pressure overload. In this work, the exchanger has been shown to be upregulated by persistent pressure overload for at least one to two weeks. The 5' end of the NCX1 gene has been characterized in order to examine transcriptional regulation of the cardiac promoter. Four feline NCX1 isoforms of the 5' untranslated region have been cloned: one from brain (Br1), one from kidney (K1), and two from heart (H1 …

Analysis Of Phosphorescence In Heterogeneous Systems Using Distributions Of Quencher Concentration, A.S. Golub, A.S. Popel, L. Zheng, R.N. Pittman

Physiology and Biophysics Publications and Presentations

ABSTRACT

A continuous distribution approach, instead of the traditional mono- and multiexponential analysis, for determining quencher concentration in a heterogeneous system has been developed. A mathematical model of phosphorescence decay inside a volume with homogeneous concentration of phosphor and heterogeneous concentration of quencher was formulated to obtain pulse-response fitting functions for four different distributions of quencher concentration: rectangular, normal (Gaussian), gamma, and multimodal. The analysis was applied to parameter estimates of a heterogeneous distribution of oxygen tension (P02) within a volume. Simulated phosphorescence decay data were randomly generated for different distributions and heterogeneity of PO2 inside the excitation/emission volume, consisting …

Sites Other Than Nucleotide 234 Determine Cardiovirulence In Natural Isolates Of Coxsackievirus B3, Nora M. Chapman, Jose R. Romero, Mark A. Pallansch, Steven Tracy

United States Public Health Resources

The genetic site(s) that naturally determine the cardiovirulence phenotype of coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3) have yet to be mapped. Using two closely related CVB3 strains that differed in terms of cardiovirulence phenotype in mice, we previously reported the difference in phenotype mapped to a single site, nucleotide 234 (nt234) in the 58 non-translated region (NTR) of the CVB3 genome. When nt234 was C, the virus was attenuated and when U, the virus was cardiovirulent. To determine whether this finding was applicable to other strains of CVB3, we examined 13 different naturally occurring CVB3 strains isolated in different years in the United …

Environmental Risk Factors And Cancer In The Charleston Heart Study, Vicki Bishop Benard Jan 1997

Environmental Risk Factors And Cancer In The Charleston Heart Study, Vicki Bishop Benard

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Existing research suggests that a variety of environmental factors play an important role in cancer mortality. The association between some of these factors and cancer mortality was examined using data from the Charleston Heart Study, a thirty-five year prospective cohort. Baseline measurements for tobacco use, place of residence, occupation, education, water supply and physical activity were made in 1960/63 on 2,283 participants. The vital status of the cohort was ascertained through 1994, and the underlying cause of death as determined by the nosologist was used to define cancer mortality. There were 294 cancer deaths identified over the 35-year period. Statistical …

The Role Of Reactive Oxygen Species In The Induction Of Interleukin-8 (Il-8) By Rhinovirus, Matthew Biagioli Jan 1997

The Role Of Reactive Oxygen Species In The Induction Of Interleukin-8 (Il-8) By Rhinovirus, Matthew Biagioli

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

There is a direct correlation between the severity of common cold symptoms and the concentration of IL-8 in nasal secretions from volunteers with experimental human rhinovirus (hRV) colds. Although these and other data are consistent with the hypothesis that IL-8 is a mediator of common cold symptoms, the mechanism by which IL-8 is elaborated in response to hRV challenge is not understood. This study examined the role of oxidative stress and NF-κB activation in hRV induced IL-8 elaboration. All studies were done in either a transformed respiratory epithelial cell line (Beas-2b) or human lung fibroblasts (MRC-5). Induction of oxidative stress …

Behavior Management In Children With Autism And Related Disorders, Lisa J. Miller Jan 1997

Behavior Management In Children With Autism And Related Disorders, Lisa J. Miller

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Children with autism and related disorders commonly suffer from developmental delays and physical impairments. These often require services such as physical and occupational therapy. The behavioral symptoms these children display can pose an additional challenge to therapy sessions, requiring therapists to spend time dealing with the behaviors rather than focusing on the treatment.

The purpose of the study is to review the literature on autism and related disorders and to provide effective means of behavior management to achieve more effective therapy sessions. This paper will discuss physical therapy interventions such as sensory integration and deep touch proprioception, and how these …

Eating Disorders And Their Relevance To The Health Professional, Tammy L. Surdez Jan 1997

Eating Disorders And Their Relevance To The Health Professional, Tammy L. Surdez

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa have become more prevalent among young people in our society. This rising pursuit of thinness can be attributed, in part, to our society's idealistic view of beauty and appeal, in addition to several other causal factors. Adolescents and young adults struggle to meet the unrealistic demands of society, often resorting to potentially fatal behaviors such as starvation, binging, and purging. These disorders often present with identifiable signs and symptoms. As health professionals, we must be prepared to identify these characteristic signs and symptoms in order to identify patients who are at …

Dexamethasone Decreases Cell-Cell Adhesion In The 235-1 Pituitary Tumor Cell Line, Phillip Richard Spangler Jan 1997

Dexamethasone Decreases Cell-Cell Adhesion In The 235-1 Pituitary Tumor Cell Line, Phillip Richard Spangler

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Physical contacts between cells are known to influence a broad range of biological activities. Investigations into the regulation of prolactin gene expression have shown that cell behavior within the pituitary may also be affected by adhesive contacts. To better understand the mechanisms that regulate cell-cell adhesive contacts in these endocrine cells, we developed a procedure that quantitatively assays homotypic aggregation in the rat pituitary tumor cell line, 235-1. We observed that treatment of 235-1 cells with dexamethasone (Dex), a synthetic glucocorticoid, not only reduces prolactin production but also decreases the reformation of cell-cell contacts. In two independent experiments, control cells …

Indicator Bacteria Concentrations Of Two Northwest Arkansas Streams In Relation To Flow And Season, Dwayne R. Edwards, Mark S. Coyne, Tommy C. Daniel, P. F. Vendrell, J. F. Murdoch, P. A. Moore Jr. Jan 1997

Indicator Bacteria Concentrations Of Two Northwest Arkansas Streams In Relation To Flow And Season, Dwayne R. Edwards, Mark S. Coyne, Tommy C. Daniel, P. F. Vendrell, J. F. Murdoch, P. A. Moore Jr.

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Concentrations of indicator bacteria such as fecal coliform (FC) and fecal streptococcus (FS) are often used to assess the suitability of waters for their intended use(s) and to allocate resources for water quality improvement measures. There is evidence, however, that concentrations of FC and FS can be influenced by variables such as season and flow rate during sampling, which could lead to biased results. The objective of this study was to assess the impacts of season and flow rate on concentrations of FC and FS. Fecal indicator bacteria concentrations were measured for approximately three years at five sites on two …

Translational Regulation Of Lipoprotein Lipase By Epinephrine Involves A Trans-Acting Binding Protein Interacting With The 3′ Untranslated Region, Gouri Ranganathan, Diane Vu, Philip A. Kern Jan 1997

Translational Regulation Of Lipoprotein Lipase By Epinephrine Involves A Trans-Acting Binding Protein Interacting With The 3′ Untranslated Region, Gouri Ranganathan, Diane Vu, Philip A. Kern

Clinical and Translational Science Faculty Publications

To better characterize the translational regulation of lipoprotein lipase (LPL) by epinephrine, cytoplasmic extracts were prepared from 3T3-L1 adipocytes, 3T3-F442A adipocytes, and other nonadipocyte cell lines (C2 cells, 3T3 fibroblasts, and Chinese hamster ovary cells). After treatment with epinephrine, cell extracts from the adipocytes inhibited LPL translation in an in vitro translation assay, whereas extracts from the C2 cells and 3T3 fibroblasts did not affect LPL translation. To identify the region on the LPL mRNA that controlled translation, in vitro translation was carried out using constructs containing different LPL sequences. Specific deletion of the first 50 (1601-1650) nucleotides of the …

Social And Cultural Factors Affecting Rates Of Regular Retreatment Of Mosquito Nets With Insecticide In Bagamoyo District, Tanzania, P.J. Winch, A.M. Makemba, V.R. Makame, M.S. Mfaume, M.C. Lynch, Zul Premji, J.N. Minjas, C.J. Shiff

Pathology, East Africa

Insecticide-treated mosquito nets have an impact on mortality and morbidity in young children under controlled conditions. When integrated into larger control programs, there is the danger that rates of regular retreatment of the nets with insecticide will drop, greatly limiting their effectiveness as a public health intervention. In Bagamoyo District, Tanzania, rates of retreatment dropped significantly when payment for the insecticide was introduced. A series of neighbourhood (hamlet) meetings were held in all study villages to discuss people's concerns about the insecticide and ways to increase rates of retreatment. Although changes were made in the procedure for retreatment, rates of …

The Law And Psychiatry Wars, 1960-1980, Sheldon Gelman Jan 1997

The Law And Psychiatry Wars, 1960-1980, Sheldon Gelman

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

The chapter of the book excerpted below examines litigation developments from the late 1960s to the early 1980s. In law no less than in psychiatry, professional judgments produced anomalous results and professional processes worked in unexpected ways when it came to medications. These departures advanced a public mental health vision that was functionally the same as psychiatrists', even if couched in utterly different and more legalistic terms. Psychiatrists hailed medications as a medical revolution; lawyers by and large ignored the drugs. Yet, both professions reached the same general conclusions about what should be done.Commentators at the time saw an emerging …

Diagnostic And Rehabilitation Techniques For Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo, Aaron Reinhardt Jan 1997

Diagnostic And Rehabilitation Techniques For Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo, Aaron Reinhardt

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) is a disorder of the peripheral vestibular system that results in vertigo, nystagmus, and often nausea and vomiting. BPPV has been treated in the past by a variety of rehabilitation approaches. Today, physical therapists are becoming an integral part of the rehabilitation of these patients. The purpose of this study is to review the diagnostic and treatment techniques currently being used to rehabilitate patients diagnosed with BPPV. This will be accomplished by thoroughly examining the anatomical and physiological processes involved in BPPV. Once these are discussed, the diagnostic process will be explored. Finally, all current …

A Comparison Of Botox Injections To Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy In The Treatment Of Spasticity, Katherine S. Rogers Jan 1997

A Comparison Of Botox Injections To Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy In The Treatment Of Spasticity, Katherine S. Rogers

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Following certain types of perinatal or adult-onset brain damage spasticity is the common feature. A persons's disability can be greatly increased secondary to spasticity, which may present a major problem in the restoration of motor function.

Depending on the cause and location of brain injury, the clinical characteristics of spasticity can vary in signs and severity. These varying signs include flexor spasms in the patient with the spinal injury, dystonic posturing in the patient with hemiplegia and spastic diplegia in the child with cerebral palsy. It is apparent that many factors are involved with augmented reflexes and the list of …

Lower Extremity Strength Training To Decrease Falls In The Elderly, Kelly L. Spadolini Jan 1997

Lower Extremity Strength Training To Decrease Falls In The Elderly, Kelly L. Spadolini

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

p>As the elderly population grows, the health care needs of people over the age of sixty-five will dominate the medical profession. Methods of prevention of health problems are key to providing the optimal medical care. Falling has been reported as the most prevalent means of injury in older people. One third of all seniors living in the community and one half of those residing in nursing homes fall each year. Research indicates that elderly people who fall have weaker lower extremity strength than elderly people who do not fall. As a result, some clinicians have incorporated strengthening regiments into …

Athletic Nutrition, Glenn M. Taira Jan 1997

Athletic Nutrition, Glenn M. Taira

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Science has broken down many of the barriers that once kept athletes from performing at their very best. This has been done through the scientific study of athletes and the development of a combination of proper training, technique, mental attitude, and nutrition. While training and technique are variables that come with time and practice, proper nutrition can produce positive changes in an athlete's performance in a relatively short period of time. Eating the right kinds of foods, in the right proportions, for a given type of athletic event (Le. aerobic, anaerobic, strength, and muscular definition) can provide an athlete the …

A Literature Review Of Alcohol Abuse And Dependence, Julie R. Vaughan Jan 1997

A Literature Review Of Alcohol Abuse And Dependence, Julie R. Vaughan

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Alcohol abuse and/or dependence poses significant risks to a person's health. The negative effects and consequences of alcohol abuse and/or dependence has been well documented in the literature. Many people who are either alcohol abusers or alcohol dependent are admitted to hospitals with neurological deficits, medical complications and traumatic injuries. Often times an etiology related to alcohol abuse is ignored.

This population may be referred to physical therapy for rehabilitation. Functional outcomes and compliance are often unsatisfactory with this population. A better understanding of alcohol abuse and/or dependence could help identify persons at risk and improve functional outcomes.

The purpose …

Role Of Egr-1 Gene Expression In B Cell Receptor-Induced Apoptosis In An Immature B Cell Lymphoma, Subramanian Muthukkumar, Seong-Su Han, Sumathi Muthukkumar, Vivek M. Rangnekar, Subbarao Bondada Jan 1997

Role Of Egr-1 Gene Expression In B Cell Receptor-Induced Apoptosis In An Immature B Cell Lymphoma, Subramanian Muthukkumar, Seong-Su Han, Sumathi Muthukkumar, Vivek M. Rangnekar, Subbarao Bondada

Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

Ligation of B cell receptor (BCR) on BKS-2, an immature B cell lymphoma by anti-IgM antibodies (Ab) caused apoptosis. Here we report that signaling through B cell receptor in wild type BKS-2 cells down-regulated the expression of Egr-1, a zinc finger-containing transcription factor. A reduction in the level of Egr-1 mRNA could be demonstrated as early as 30 min after the ligation of BCR on BKS-2 cells. Immunocytochemical and Western blot analysis revealed that the expression of EGR-1 protein was also inhibited by anti-IgM treatment. Antisense oligonucleotides to Egr-1 caused growth inhibition and apoptosis in BKS-2 cells, suggesting that expression …

Transition To Adulthood Of Female Factory Workers: Some Evidence From Bangladesh, Sajeda Amin, Ian Diamond, Ruchira Tabassum Naved, Margaret Newby Jan 1997

Transition To Adulthood Of Female Factory Workers: Some Evidence From Bangladesh, Sajeda Amin, Ian Diamond, Ruchira Tabassum Naved, Margaret Newby

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

The rapidly expanding sector of garment manufacturing for export is unusual for Bangladesh in that it employs young, unmarried women in large numbers. This paper examines data from a study on garment workers in Bangladesh to explore the implications of work for the early socialization of young women. For the first time young women are given an alternative to lives where they move directly from childhood into adulthood through early marriage and childbearing. Work creates a period of transition as contrasted with the abrupt assumption of adult roles at very young ages that marriage and childbearing mandate. It is argued …

Absent And Problematic Men: Demographic Accounts Of Male Reproductive Roles, Margaret E. Greene, Ann E. Biddlecom Jan 1997

Absent And Problematic Men: Demographic Accounts Of Male Reproductive Roles, Margaret E. Greene, Ann E. Biddlecom

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Both men and women make important contributions to the production of children, yet demographic studies of fertility and family planning have tended to focus on women alone. This paper traces the development of demography’s emphasis on women and describes how the limitations of its theoretical approaches to reproduction and empirical neglect of men have been mutually reinforcing. The paper is structured around four aims: 1) to describe why men have had a relatively low profile as subjects in demographic research on reproduction; 2) to explain growing interest in studying men’s roles; 3) to evaluate existing research on men in developing …

The P System: A Scheme For Organizing Pavlovian Procedures, Jose E. Burgos, Rick A. Bevins Jan 1997

The P System: A Scheme For Organizing Pavlovian Procedures, Jose E. Burgos, Rick A. Bevins

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The present paper introduces the P system as a scheme for organizing Pavlovian procedures in an orderly and comprehensive manner. The system is defined by three temporal variables and three restrictions on their possible values. It can be used to define all standard temporal variables—namely, stimulus duration, interstimulus interval, trace interval, and intertrial interval—as well as variables C and T of scalar expectancy theory. The system also permits the definition of new independent variables through combinations of the basic temporal parameters. We exemplify this possibility by defining two ratios of temporal intervals. These ratios lead to a space where traditional …
