The Relationship Between Leadership/Followership In Staff Nurses And Employment Setting, Elaine S. Vandoren
The Relationship Between Leadership/Followership In Staff Nurses And Employment Setting, Elaine S. Vandoren
Dissertations
This study tested the hypothesis that staff nurses in hospitals used different leadership and followership behaviors than staff nurses in home care settings. Leadership behaviors were measured using the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (Bass, 1995); followership was measured using Kelley’s Followership Style Questionnaire (1992). Three hospital and home care agencies belonging to a private nonprofit corporation in the Midwest provided data. A total of 136 surveys were used in data analysis; 57% of distributed surveys were returned.
Differences between the hospital and home care staff nurses were not found. Self-perception, difficulty in applying clinical behaviors to the MLQ, unknown aspects of …
Antigen-Specific Cd8+ T Cells Protect Against Lethal Toxoplasmosis In Mice Infected With Neospora Caninum, Lloyd H. Kasper, Imtiaz A. Khan
Antigen-Specific Cd8+ T Cells Protect Against Lethal Toxoplasmosis In Mice Infected With Neospora Caninum, Lloyd H. Kasper, Imtiaz A. Khan
Dartmouth Scholarship
Neospora caninum is a coccidial protozoan parasite that appears morphologically indistinguishable from Toxoplasma gondii and that infects a large range of mammals. Both inbred and outbred strains of mice exhibit a high degree of resistance to infection with N. caninum. Three inbred strains of mice (A/J, BALB/c, and C57BL/6) that were infected intraperitoneally with N. caninum were protected against a lethal challenge from T. gondii. Vaccine-induced protection was Neospora dose dependent. A rise in the CD8+ T-cell population in mice that had been vaccinated with N. caninum and challenged with T. gondii was observed. Adoptive transfer of CD8+ T-cell splenocytes …

Mathematical Models Of Tumors And Their Remote Metastases, Carryn Bellomo
Mathematical Models Of Tumors And Their Remote Metastases, Carryn Bellomo
Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations
Clinical observations and indications in the literature have led us to investigate several models of tumors. For example, it has been shown that a tumor has the ability to send out anti-growth factors, or inhibitors, to keep its remote metastases from growing. Thus, we model the depleting effect of such a growth inhibitor after the removal of the primary tumor (thus removing the source) as a function of time t and distance from the original tumor r.
It has also been shown clinically that oxygen and glucose are nutrients critical to the survival and growth of tumors. Thus, we model …
Reaction-Diffusion Models Of Cancer Dispersion, Kim Yvette Ward
Reaction-Diffusion Models Of Cancer Dispersion, Kim Yvette Ward
Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations
The phenomenological modeling of the spatial distribution and temporal evolution of one-dimensional models of cancer dispersion are studied. The models discussed pertain primarily to the transition of a tumor from an initial neoplasm to the dormant avascular state, i.e. just prior to the vascular state, whenever that may occur. Initiating the study is the mathematical analysis of a reaction-diffusion model describing the interaction between cancer cells, normal cells and growth inhibitor. The model leads to several predictions, some of which are supported by experimental data and clinical observations $\lbrack25\rbrack$. We will examine the effects of additional terms on these characteristics. …

Dental Hygiene Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this descriptive research was to determine the need for a distance education program for geographically dispersed dental hygienists to complete a baccalaureate degree program in dental hygiene. The sample consisted of randomly selected licensed dental hygienists in the Commonwealth of Virginia. A self-designed instrument, titled The Distance Education for a Dental Hygiene Degree Completion Program Questionnaire, was mailed to the study participants after establishing validity and reliability. The questionnaire asked participants to provide information concerning personal demographics, educational background, and interest in completing a dental hygiene baccalaureate degree via distance education. Frequencies, percentages, crosstabulations, chi-square test …
Developmental And Hormonal Regulation Of The Expression Of Cytosolic Phospholipase A2 Protein Levels In Baboon Placenta, Kathleen Elizabeth Dunstan
Developmental And Hormonal Regulation Of The Expression Of Cytosolic Phospholipase A2 Protein Levels In Baboon Placenta, Kathleen Elizabeth Dunstan
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations
Cytosolic phospholipase A2 ( cPLA2) specifically catalyzes the release of arachidonate from membrane phospholipids, thus initiating synthesis of prostaglandins, thromboxanes, and other eicosanoids. The human and nonhuman primate placenta actively synthesize high levels of eicosanoids which play both an autocrine and paracrine role in placental function. Previous studies in Dr. Miriam D. Rosenthal's laboratory have shown that cPLA2 mRNA levels are developmentally regulated. The present study was designed to determine whether placental cPLA2 protein levels increased during gestation. Since the marked increases in estrogen levels during normal pregnancy have been shown to enhance morphological and …

The Role Of Glycoconjugates In Mediating Human Fertilization And Induction Of Fetomaternal Tolerance, Manish S. Patankar
Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences
Using the hemizona assay (HZA), a in vitro sperm-egg binding assay, we show that specific glycoconjugates known to inhibit immune cell interactions mediated by the selectins, potently block human sperm-egg binding. The selectin ligand sialyl Lewisx inhibits sperm binding in the HZA by 60% at a concentration of 1 mg/ml. Our data indicates that glycodelin-A, a endometrial glycoprotein known to block sperm-egg binding in the HZA at low concentrations expresses unusual fucosylated lacdiNAc type glycans. The fucosylated lacdiNAc type sugars have been previously shown to be 15-20 fold more potent ligands of E-selectin. Glycodelin-S a seminal plasma glycoform of …
Pressure-Induced Intracellular Signaling In Isolated Arteries, Victor A. Miriel
Pressure-Induced Intracellular Signaling In Isolated Arteries, Victor A. Miriel
Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences
The ability of cells to respond to mechanical stimuli has been studied through a variety of techniques in numerous cell types. The cells of the vascular wall have adapted to specific mechanical stresses through the activation of intracellular signaling pathways which result in cell-specific responses such as hypertrophy, hyperplasia, proliferation, and migration. Vascular smooth muscle of the arteries have been shown to be sensitive to mechanical stimuli such as stretch, and pressure.
This study attempts to add to the current knowledge of mechanotransduction by utilizing the isolated artery preparation. This preparation allows for the study of vascular smooth muscle signal …

The Chlamydia species are obligate intracellular bacteria that proliferate only within the infected cell. Since the extracellular bacteria are metabolically inert and there are no cell-free systems for characterizingChlamydia metabolism, we studied metabolic changes related to ATP synthesis and glycolysis in HeLa cells infected withChlamydia psittaci during the course of the 2-day infection cycle using noninvasive 31P and 13C NMR methods. We find that the infection stimulates ATP synthesis in the infected cell, with a peak of ATP levels occurring midway through the infection cycle, when most of the metabolically active bacteria are proliferating. The infection also stimulates synthesis of …

Development Of A Blocking Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay For Detection Of Serum Antibodies To O157 Antigen Of Escherichia Coli., W Laegreid, M Hoffman, J Keen, R Elder, J Kwang
Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers
The O157 antigen of Escherichia coli shares structural elements with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) antigens of other bacterial species, notably Brucella abortus and Yersinia enterocolitica 09, a fact that confounds the interpretation of assays for anti-O157 antibodies. To address this problem, a blocking enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (bELISA) was designed with E. coli O157:H7 LPS as the antigen and a monoclonal antibody specific for E. coli O157, designated 13B3, as the competing antibody. The bELISA had equivalent sensitivity to, and significantly higher specificity than, the indirect ELISA (iELISA), detecting anti-O157 antibodies in sera from cattle experimentally inoculated with O157:H7. Only 13% of sera …

Subcellular Localization Of Mineralocorticoid Receptors In Living Cells: Effects Of Receptor Agonists And Antagonists, Géza Fejes-Tóth, David Pearce, Anikó Náray-Fejes-Tóth
Dartmouth Scholarship
Results on the subcellular localization of the mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) have been controversial. To determine the subcellular distribution and trafficking of the MR in living cells after binding of agonists and antagonists, we expressed a MR-green fluorescent protein (GFP) chimera in mammalian cells lacking endogenous MR. The GFP-tagged MR (GFP-MR) remained transcriptionally active, as determined in cotransfection experiments with the MR-responsive reporter, TAT3-LUC. The subcellular localization of GFP-MR was monitored by fluorescence time-lapse microscopy. In the absence of hormone, MR was present both in the cytoplasm and nucleus. Aldosterone induced a rapid nuclear accumulation of the MR. Aldosterone-bound GFP-MR was …
Accuracy Of The Ovulon Fertility Monitor To Predict And Detect Ovulation, Richard J. Fehring, William D. Schlaff
Accuracy Of The Ovulon Fertility Monitor To Predict And Detect Ovulation, Richard J. Fehring, William D. Schlaff
College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications
The purpose of this pilot study was to correlate the three biologic markers of the Ovulon fertility monitor (a long-term predictive peak about 6 days before ovulation, a short-term predictive peak about 1 day before ovulation, and a nadir at the time of ovulation) with the peak in cervical mucus and the luteinizing hormone (LH) surge in the urine. Ten volunteer subjects (mean age 30.2 years) monitored their cervical-vaginal mucus, the surge of LH in the urine with a home assay test, and their vaginal electrical readings (with Ovulon monitors) on a daily basis for one to four menstrual cycles. …

The Greatest Memory Teacher Ever: Review Of Memory’S Ghost: The Nature Of Memory And The Strange Tale Of Mr. M., By Philip J. Hilts, Brian H. Bornstein
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Although psychologists and neurologists have been familiar with the case of H.M. for years, this small volume makes his story—and what it can teach us about the functioning of memory—accessible to a much wider audience. Hilts has done a good job of piecing together H.M.’s early life, in the absence of any living relatives and all but a few written records. He recreates the life of a very normal youth in the 1930s and 1940s; normal, that is, until H.M.’s first epileptic seizure. In 1954, after several other treatments for the epilepsy had failed, H.M. (at age 27) had a …

Investigation Of The Roles Of Toxin-Coregulated Pili And Mannose-Sensitive Hemagglutinin Pili In The Pathogenesis Of Vibrio Cholerae O139 Infection, Carol O. Tacket, Ronald K. Taylor, Genevieve Losonsky, Yu Lim
Dartmouth Scholarship
In this study, adult volunteers were fed tcpA and mshA deletion mutants of V. cholerae O139 strain CVD 112 to determine the role of toxin-coregulated pili (TCP) and mannose-sensitive hemagglutinin (MSHA) in intestinal colonization. Eight of 10 volunteers who received CVD 112 or CVD 112 ΔmshA shed the vaccine strains in their stools; the geometric mean peak excretion for both groups was 1.4 × 105 CFU/g of stool. In contrast, only one of nine recipients of CVD 112 ΔtcpA shed vibrios in his stool (P < 0.01); during the first 24 h after inoculation, 3 × 102 CFU/g was recovered from this volunteer. All recipients of CVD …

Proactive Technique For Workplace Chemical Exposure, James A. Duru
Proactive Technique For Workplace Chemical Exposure, James A. Duru
Theses
The rapid increase in the number and quantities of chemicals released into the environment has been accompanied by a lack of adequate pre-released testing for advance health outcomes. Chemicals which serve as feed stock to millions of industries all around the world to produce and process food, cosmetics, equipment, and energy to propel industries, automobiles, home heating and electricity have serious adverse health consequences. They are hazardous. These substances can explode, ignite, react and corrode. Adapting the definition of the international program on chemical safety, a "hazard" is a source of danger. This thesis proposes some proactive prevention techniques useful …
