Psychoanalytic Praxis And The Truth Of Pain, William J. Richardson Jan 2001

Psychoanalytic Praxis And The Truth Of Pain, William J. Richardson

Research Resources

William J. Richardson’s, “Psychoanalytic Praxis and the Truth of Pain” critically reviews Lacan’s conception of science, truth, and language above all. For Lacan, speaking of the “subject of science,” it is as if the entire scientific enterprise – its history, its institutions and all the virulence of its burgeoning power – may be conceived as the function of a single hypostasized, egoless subject: the “correlate” of science as such, taken as a whole. Reading Lacan’s essay “Science and Truth,” Richardson offers a philosophical outline of the strengths of Lacan’s analysis along with its limitations, including a discussion of Heidegger's aletheia …

Considering The Use Of Maggots In The Debridement Of Wounds: A Case Study, Leslie Mayer Jan 2001

Considering The Use Of Maggots In The Debridement Of Wounds: A Case Study, Leslie Mayer

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Maggot debridement therapy is the application of fly larvae to a necrotic wound. Once popular in the 1930s and1940s, its use declined with the introduction of antibiotics, improvement of aseptic wound care, more aggressive surgical debridement techniques, and its unacceptability by the public. The purpose of this study was to gain a better understanding of maggot therapy, its clinical implications, and to review a medical chart of a Wyoming patient who received this treatment. The material is presented in one concise resource and the protocol included can be evaluated by other clinics using maggot therapy.

A medical chart review was …

The Association Of Generalized Joint Hyperlaxity And Occurrence Of Musculoskeletal Injury, Beth Klancher Jan 2001

The Association Of Generalized Joint Hyperlaxity And Occurrence Of Musculoskeletal Injury, Beth Klancher

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Generalized joint hyperlaxity is characterized by excess range of motion in most joints, which surpasses accepted normal range of motion values for the population. Hyperlaxity is present in 4-7% of the general population. Literature is inconclusive regarding the significance of joint laxity as a predisposing factor to injury in non-athletic populations.

The purpose of this study was to determine if there is a significant correlation between joint laxity and previous musculoskeletal injuries. In addition, the data was evaluated to compare laxity rates by gender, choice of collegiate major, type of injuries, and weekly activity level.

Two-hundred and thirty-nine students, age …

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder : Is It A Behavior Disorder Or Active Childhood Behavior?, Larry G. Scheel Jan 2001

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder : Is It A Behavior Disorder Or Active Childhood Behavior?, Larry G. Scheel

Graduate Research Papers

Although attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder constitutes 33 to 50% of mental health referrals for children, an increasing number of researchers has begun to question the validity of ADHD as a legitimate diagnosis. Eberstadt in her 1999 review stated, "Society has changed since the mid-1980s to view what may be normal childhood activity as lack of behavioral compliance" (p.1). Could the prevalence of ADHD simply be an increasingly active society's response to normal, active childhood behavior? The purpose of this paper is to examine the history of ADHD and explore assessment methods. Data from current literature and personal interviews with recognized professionals …

The First Forty Years Of The Alternatives Approach: Refining, Reducing, And Replacing The Use Of Laboratory Animals, Martin L. Stephens, Alan M. Goldberg, Andrew N. Rowan Jan 2001

The First Forty Years Of The Alternatives Approach: Refining, Reducing, And Replacing The Use Of Laboratory Animals, Martin L. Stephens, Alan M. Goldberg, Andrew N. Rowan

State of the Animals 2001

The concept of the Three Rs— reduction, refinement, and replacement of animal use in biomedical experimentation—stems from a project launched in 1954 by a British organization, the Universities Federation for Animal Welfare (UFAW). UFAW commissioned William Russell and Rex Burch to analyze the status of humane experimental techniques involving animals. In 1959 these scientists published a book that set out the principles of the Three Rs, which came to be known as alternative methods. Initially, Russell and Burch’s book was largely ignored, but their ideas were gradually picked up by the animal protection community in the 1960s and early ’70s. …

Animal Research: A Review Of Developments, 1950–2000, Andrew N. Rowan, Franklin M. Loew

State of the Animals 2001

The third phase of the animal research debate started around 1950. After World War II the government became a major sponsor of scientific research, including biomedical research. The budget of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) grew dramatically and has continued to grow, with a few minor retrenchment periods, up to the present time (see Figure 1). This growth led to an enormous expansion in publicly funded research. In the private sector, the discovery of penicillin and streptomycin led to a tremendous expansion in pharmaceutical research and in the size of the prescription drug industry. These expansions in government funding …

Dissection: The Scientific Case For Alternatives, Jonathan Balcombe

Experimentation Collection

This article presents the scientific argument that learning methods that replace traditional nonhuman animal-consumptive methods in life science education—so-called alternatives to dissection—are pedagogically sound and probably superior to dissection. This article focuses on the pedagogy, a learning method’s effectiveness for conveying knowledge.

Effect Of Forskolin On Actin Polymerization In Cultured Vascular Smooth Muscle, Mary Janay Bailey Jan 2001

Effect Of Forskolin On Actin Polymerization In Cultured Vascular Smooth Muscle, Mary Janay Bailey

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Increases in intracellular cyclic AMP levels have been shown to affect vascular smooth muscle morphology. In the present study, effects of elevated cyclic AMP levels on actin polymerization were assessed to determine whether cyclic AMP induces specific changes in cytoskeletal proteins of vascular smooth muscle cells. Forskolin was used to increase intracellular cyclic AMP levels through direct activation of adenylate cyclase. Light and Electron microscopy was employed to appraise changes in the shape of vascular smooth muscle cells. Confocal microscopy was used to reveal cytoskeletal changes after exposure to M forskolin for increasing intervals of time. Differences in the expression …

Prp-C And Prp-Sc At The Fetal-Maternal Interface, Wenbin Tuo, Dongyue Zhuang, Donald P. Knowles, William P. Cheevers, Man-Sun Sy, Katherine I. O'Rourke

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

Scrapie is a naturally occurring prion (PrP) disease causing a fatal neurodegenerative disorder in sheep and goats. Previous studies suggest that scrapie is transmitted naturally through exposure to the scrapie agent in wasted placentas of infected ewes. This study determined the distribution and biochemical properties of PrP cellular (PrP-C) and the distribution of PrP scrapie (PrP-Sc) in reproductive, placental, and selected fetal tissues and fetal fluids in sheep. Glycosylated, N-terminally truncated, proteinase K-sensitive PrP-C with apparent molecular masses of 23–37 kDa was present in reproductive, placental, and fetal tissues and fetal fluids. PrP-C was low or undetectable in intercotyledonary chorioallantois, …

The Effect Of Meal Composition And Body Fat On Sleep And Tiredness, Michael Malone Jan 2001

The Effect Of Meal Composition And Body Fat On Sleep And Tiredness, Michael Malone

All Volumes (2001-2008)

The role of dietary carbohydrates, dietary fat, and body fat in the regulation of sleep and tiredness was determined by studying sleep and tiredness in nineteen female subjects of different body compositions. It was hypothesized that dietary fat and body fat interact to cause an increase in sleep and tiredness. Subjects were healthy college students between the ages of 18 and 25 years old. This study was dual-phased. Phase I involved a 21 day record of normal hours slept per day and self-reported tiredness. In Phase II, the subjects consumed both a high-fat and high-carbohydrate diet for five days (for …

Mdmx Binding To Arf Affects Mdm2 Protein Stability And P53 Transactivation, Mark W. Jackson, Mikael S. Lindström, Steven J. Berberich Jan 2001

Mdmx Binding To Arf Affects Mdm2 Protein Stability And P53 Transactivation, Mark W. Jackson, Mikael S. Lindström, Steven J. Berberich

Educator Preparation & Leadership Faculty Works

Regulation of p53 involves a complex network of protein interactions. The primary regulator of p53 protein stability is the Mdm2 protein. ARF and MdmX are two proteins that have recently been shown to inhibit Mdm2-mediated degradation of p53 via distinct associations with Mdm2. We demonstrate here that ARF is capable of interacting with MdmX and in a manner similar to its association with Mdm2, sequestering MdmX within the nucleolus. The sequestration of MdmX by ARF results in an increase in p53 transactivation. In addition, the redistribution of MdmX by ARF requires that a nucleolar localization signal be present …
