Providing Health Providers Best Practice Strategies When Working With The Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Population: A Continuing Education, Noah L. Epperson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Background: Healthcare training has improved over the years. However, many healthcare providers are having a difficult time understanding the culture and the needs of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (HOH) community. Continuing Education (CE) programs can be designed to improve cultural awareness to help close the gap by educating healthcare providers on the community’s culture, effective communication strategies, use of assistive technology, American Sign Language (ASL), and accommodations such as interpreters.
Purpose: The project aimed to develop a CE program that helped healthcare providers learn effective communication strategies, assistive devices, and accommodations for the Deaf and HOH community. Additionally, …

A Review Of The Utilization Of Comics In Research And The Potential For Graphic Medicine Integration In Health Science Communication, Nagatarang Nimmathota
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Communication is a vital part of research, both during its conduction and the dissemination of its findings. This can be difficult to achieve due to factors like knowledge disparity, technical jargon, and differing backgrounds. This narrative literature review draws from databases like PubMed, ScienceDirect, and others to examine the current utilization of graphic medicine in research and its effects on health research communication. This review found that the integration of graphic medicine can help alleviate those issues by simplifying complex topics into engaging visual narratives or comics for consumption by research participants and the public. Additionally, the use of graphic …

Abstract
Background: Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are more likely to report barriers to healthcare access than individuals with other disabilities and non-autistic persons. Many barriers to healthcare for those on the spectrum have been identified and include: negative interactions with healthcare staff, communication barriers with healthcare providers, lack of providers knowledgeable of ASD, sensory concerns, and difficulty navigating the healthcare system. The Autism Support Checklist (ASC) is a tool designed to outline communication methods, sensory concerns, soothing items/actions, triggers, special interests, safety concerns, and other information pertinent to an autistic patient. The tool is designed to convey the …
From Success To Setbacks: A Case Study Of The Sex Wrap And The Impact Of Instagram's Evolving Policies On Sexual Health Education, Megan Piller
Public Health Theses
Due to the inconsistent and noncomprehensive nature of sexual health education across the United States, many adolescents and emerging adults are turning to digital platforms, specifically social media, for necessary information. The Sex Wrap (TSW), a podcast and Instagram-focused intervention, was established to fill critical knowledge gaps among these populations and empower them in their sexual decision-making. To serve as a case study, engagement metrics from TSW’s Instagram account between October 2020 and September 2021 were analyzed to determine which post types, tones, and thematic categories resonated most with users across the platform. However, Instagram, once a highly effective tool …

Design Thinking As A Theoretical Framework To Spark Innovation In Post-Professional Occupational Therapy Doctoral Projects, Jessica D. Asiello, Sunny R. Winstead
Journal of Occupational Therapy Education
Contemporary occupational therapy (OT) practice is situated within healthcare, education, and community-based systems faced with increasingly complex problems. There is therefore a need to develop OT practitioners’ capacity for innovation to influence change. Post-professional Doctor of Occupational Therapy (PPOTD) students are seasoned clinicians with an understanding of the challenges of everyday practice, combined with an intrinsic motivation for professional growth that led to their return to higher education. Thus, PPOTD students are a sub-population of OT practitioners who are uniquely primed for development as innovators. Despite the prevalence of PPOTD programs in the United States, there is limited literature on …

Interactive Virtual Presence: A New Tool For Remote Healthcare, David C. Schwebel
Interactive Virtual Presence: A New Tool For Remote Healthcare, David C. Schwebel
Advances in Clinical Medical Research and Healthcare Delivery
The COVID-19 pandemic transformed use of telemedicine for healthcare. Many healthcare objectives can be successfully delivered through traditional telemedicine platforms, and others must be delivered in person. Lying between those extremes is a subset of healthcare objectives that might benefit from use of interactive virtual presence, a form of augmented reality that can be delivered on standard smartphones to offer immersive presence as well as simultaneous voice and visual stimuli. Using interactive virtual presence, a healthcare provider can communicate both verbally and visually with a remotely-located patient, but also can interact with that patient through merged reality by pointing with …

Analyzing The Message Complexity, Signal Words, And Readability Of Medical Tourism Warning Messages, Alicia Mason, Sakshi Bhati
Faculty Submissions
Medical tourists are deemed to be a vulnerable patient population because they often have limited knowledge of the specialized health care treatment and services they seek. They are also frequently unfamiliar with the medical tourism physicians, providers, and facilitators with whom they interact. As a result, travel, biomedical, and procedural risks are often difficult to define and estimate. This analysis uses computer-automated technology to analyze the risk and warning messages distributed by government and private medical associations to medical tourists. Results show these messages are often complex and highly textual with little visual graphic elements. The messages frequently lack key …

Evaluating The Quality Of Serial Em Sections With Deep Learning, Mahsa Bank Tavakoli, Josh L Morgan
Evaluating The Quality Of Serial Em Sections With Deep Learning, Mahsa Bank Tavakoli, Josh L Morgan
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Automated image acquisition can significantly improve the throughput of serial section scanning electron microscopy (ssSEM). However, image quality can vary from image to image depending on autofocusing and beam stigmation. Automatically evaluating the quality of images is, therefore, important for efficiently generating high-quality serial section scanning electron microscopy (ssSEM) datasets. We tested several convolutional neural networks for their ability to reproduce user-generated evaluations of ssSEM image quality. We found that a modification of ResNet-50 that we term quality evaluation Network (QEN) reliably predicts user-generated quality scores. Running QEN in parallel to ssSEM image acquisition therefore allows users to quickly identify …
