Ethical Impact Of Changes In Health Care On The Role Of Medicine In Society And The Physician - Patient Relationship, Albert Simon Jul 2003

Ethical Impact Of Changes In Health Care On The Role Of Medicine In Society And The Physician - Patient Relationship, Albert Simon

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Patients contact a myriad of different health care personnel in their trek through the American health care system. In the 1950s on the numerous TV shows about medicine, it was easy to discern “who was who” in the health care cast of characters in these portrayals. The physicians, like Dr. Kildare, were always male, clean cut and serious looking. Nurses wore starched white dresses with nursing caps and distinctive pins; they instantly obeyed the doctor’s orders (including the one to make the doctor a cup of coffee). For better or worse it is a different world now than it was …

The aim of this article is to bring to the attention of the international nursing community the discrepancy between a pervasive ‘caring’ nursing discourse and the most unethical nursing practice in the United States. In this article, we present a duality: the conflict in American prisons between nursing ethics and the killing machinery. The US penal system is a setting in which trained healthcare personnel practices the extermination of life. We look upon the sanitization of death work as an application of healthcare professionals’ skills and knowledge and their appropriation by the state to serve its ends. A review of …

In Pursuit Of Best Practice : Benchmarking Tools And Processes For The Management Of Hazardous Substances In The Workplace, Barry Chesson

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Conflict Of Interest And Physical Therapy, Mike W. Martin, Donald L. Gabard

Philosophy Faculty Books and Book Chapters

'In a chapter entitled “Conflict of Interest & Physical Therapy”, authors Martin & Gabard offer a cogent definition. They write simply, “conflicts of interest are situations in which individuals have interests that significantly threaten their role responsibilities, or would do so for a typical person having their role.” Likewise, Davis describes the standard view of conflict of interest as a situation in which a person P is in a relationship requiring P to exercise some judgment on another’s behalf and P has an interest “tending to interfere with the proper exercise of that judgment”.
