The Impact Of Shared Governance On Nursing Satisfaction And Retention, Melanie Wetmore
The Impact Of Shared Governance On Nursing Satisfaction And Retention, Melanie Wetmore
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Shared governance is a practice model that supports shared decision making between direct care nurses and their leaders. Developed from Kanter's theory of structural empowerment, shared governance allows employees to influence decisions made in an organization. Shared governance has been shown to increase nursing satisfaction, positively impact outcomes, and reduce nursing turnover. The purpose of this project was to examine the relationship between implementation of a system-wide, multihospital shared governance structure and registered nurse (RN) satisfaction, turnover, and perceptions of shared governance. The 3 sources of evidence used in the study were 2016-2017 organizational RN engagement survey results, 2016-2017 organizational …

Improving The Care Of Patients With Urinary Catheters Through A Quality Improvement, Ashley Nicole Holmstrom
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) significantly increases patient morbidity and mortality, length of stay, and organizational cost. In the 2 years prior to project implementation, the incidence of CAUTI increased by 15% in the local acute care, inpatient facility that served as the project site. Nursing leaders at the project site linked the increase in CAUTIs to a nursing knowledge deficit related to CAUTI prevention principles. The clinical question focused on the impact of CAUTI prevention staff training on the incidence of CAUTI, length of stay, and cost to the local acute care organization. After a review and critical appraisal …

A Study To Examine The Relationship Between Hospital Mergers And Patient Experience, Timothy William Attebery
All ETDs from UAB
Since 2009, the United States has experienced another wave of hospital mergers. Consequently, health systems are getting larger and increasing their market concentration. How patients benefit from hospital consolidation remains an open issue for policy-makers, economists, health care executives, community leaders, politicians, government agencies, and others. One measure of healthcare consolidation’s impact, and its potential benefit/detriment, is how mergers affect patient experience, which, since 2007, has been measured by the standardized HCAHPS instrument. Hundreds of studies conducted over the past 50 years have found mergers trigger an internal, socially-disruptive effect in the first 12 to 24 months following the event …
