Biochemical Properties Of Salmonella Potsdam Bacteriophage P4/2, Clyde L. Roggenkamp
Biochemical Properties Of Salmonella Potsdam Bacteriophage P4/2, Clyde L. Roggenkamp
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Over 90% recovery of phage P4/2 was realized with differential centrifugation concentration and purification, whereas only about 16% was recovered from the aqueous two-phase polymer - Genetron - ECTEOLA-cellulose column system. Purity of preparations was greatest with the density gradient centrifugation (A260 = 2.66 and A280 = 1.80 per 1012 plaque-forming units). With the chemical system of concentration and purification followed by an ECTEOLA anion exchange run, the A260 was 6.6 and the A280 was 4.3.
Three tests were employed to determine the configuration of P4/2 DNA: (1) a formalin denaturation test, (2) a thermal …

The Protein Efficiency Ratios Of Certain Individual And Supplemented Plant Foods, Barbara Jemison Myers
The Protein Efficiency Ratios Of Certain Individual And Supplemented Plant Foods, Barbara Jemison Myers
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Various individual and supplemented plant proteins were studied by the protein efficiency ratio (PER) method to determine their relative abilities to promote growth in young albino rats. Animals received a 10 percent level of protein in an otherwise adequate ration.
A soy fiber product was found to have a PER which was not significantly different from that of the control, which received non-fat Animals received a dry milk as the only source of protein, Despite good growth, however. these experimental animals failed to show satisfactory reproductive responses. When wheat gluten, lentils or pinto beans were used individually as protein sources, …
Needle Length Required For Intramuscular Injection In Women, Olive Vaughan Blumenshein
Needle Length Required For Intramuscular Injection In Women, Olive Vaughan Blumenshein
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
An exploratory study was done on fourteen females to find the depth of the subcutaneous tissue and the length of needle required to reach the musculature. Gross body measurements were correlated with the internal measurements to develop criteria predicting the depth on other individuals. Review of the literature showed that most authorities recommend two to two and one-half inch needles, while available disposable needles range from one-half to one and one-half inches in length. A pilot study of measurements taken on postmortem subjects was reported as unsatisfactory. The electrocardiograph with coaxial needle electrode was demonstrated to be a very accurate …

A Comparative Study Of The 5- And 3-Meal Plans In Six Convalescent Hospitals In San Bernardino County, Donna J. Meek
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
A study comparing the 3- and 5-meal plans of food service, as used in long-stay geriatric units in San Bernardino County, have been compared. Three homes utilizing the 5-meal plan and three utilizing the 3-meal plan, to serve as controls, were chosen. A random sample of ten patients from each home was observed for three days to find the daily average nutrients in the foods served, eaten, and wasted. Also, interviews to compare factual information and attitudes were utilized for sample patients and personnel. The nutritional data was analyzed on the computer.
The results indicated that those on the 5-meal …

A Growth Study On Phenylketonurics, Emma Johnson Aitken
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Data from forty-eight medical records of phenylketonuria children under treatment were investigated to determine if growth, as measured by stature, was normal; and to determine if the state of control or the age at beginning of treatment had an effect on growth. Mean intakes of phenylalanine, protein, and calories were obtained on the nutritional data only if the simultaneous serum phenylalanine was equal to or less than 6 milligrams per cent. These means were grouped according to the age of the children into 7 groups (0

Factors Hindering Public Health Nursing Of Tuberculosis Patients, Lida Mae Yeoman
Factors Hindering Public Health Nursing Of Tuberculosis Patients, Lida Mae Yeoman
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The study was conducted to identify some of the factors that interfere or hinder the public health nursing of the private physician's tuberculosis patient. Of fifty-one tuberculosis patients who received their care from private physicians, nineteen were interviewed. The sample was limited because patients had moved and because patient or physician refused to participate. Data were collected by use of an interview in the home. The overall findings indicated that the private physicians tuberculosis patient recognized the role of the public health nurse and the responsibility of the Health Department but resented its authority. It would appear that the patients …

The Improvement Of Peripheral Blood Flow During Hemorrhagic Hypotension Following Phenoxybenzamine Treatment Expressed In Terms Of Extracellular Potassium Shifts, Thomas J. Wera
Master's Essays (1922 - )
The study of plasma electrolytes notably, the potassium and sodium ions during hemorrhagic stress and other forms of shock, were once the subject of intense investigation (42). However, the advent of new investigative techniques enabled more complex, experimental designs and methods to be used in which it was possible to study the many other variables which exist as a result of shock regardless of cause. The proponents of the probable electrolyte mechanism in shock subsequently diminished in numbers until recent times.
It is felt by this author that recent renewal regarding the various ions, especially the cations, sodium and potassium …
Quantitative Calculation Of Gas Chromatographic Peaks In Pesticide Residue Analyses, Jean A. Gaul
Quantitative Calculation Of Gas Chromatographic Peaks In Pesticide Residue Analyses, Jean A. Gaul
United States Food and Drug Administration: Publications
Comparison of five methods for calculating gas chromatographic peaks (disc integration, triangulation, peak height X width at half height, Rt X peak height, and peak height) shows no significant difference in the calculated results when aldrin, heptachlor epoxide, and dieldrin are injected into a gas chromatograph equipped with electron capture detector.
Problems are associated with the calculation of toxaphene, chlordane, DDT, and BHC. The author makes suggestions for calculating these four residues when present individually and in combinations with other pesticides. Use of the last four toxaphene peaks compares favorably with results obtained by using the entire toxaphene curve. …

The Management Of Diabetes In Children, Thaddeus S. Danowski
The Management Of Diabetes In Children, Thaddeus S. Danowski
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
I think the time will come when we will all agree that diabetes mellitus is indeed the most common endocrinopathy, and that if we live long enough, at least 25% of the people in this room will develop diabetes. I believe that diabetes has manifestations both as a homozygous and heterozygous state, and that the heterozygous state or so-called carrier state become clinically manifest as we get older. Now I am not sure that such diabetes has the same significance as diabetes coming on earlier in life. It may be a benign type of diabetes, but at any rate, it …
Determination Of Leukoagglutinin Specificity By In Vivo And In Vitro Studies, Ali A. Hossaini, Henry E. Wilson
Determination Of Leukoagglutinin Specificity By In Vivo And In Vitro Studies, Ali A. Hossaini, Henry E. Wilson
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
Results of testing sera from normal individuals and pathological patients, using a bromelin technique for the detection of leukoagglutinins, are reported. These results, supported further by an in vivo experiment, suggested that the phenomenon of leukoagglutination is immunologic in nature and that leukoagglutinins may be the cause of some febrile transfusion reactions. These are specifically directed against leukocytes, and do not involve the red cell series. Furthermore, the antigen (or antigens) is probably present in both the granulocytes and the mononuclear leukocytes. Anti-platelet antibodies could be presumed to be the cause of thrombocytopenia.
Cryocautery And Aqueous Humor Dynamics, Herbert Wiesinger
Cryocautery And Aqueous Humor Dynamics, Herbert Wiesinger
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
A method of cyclocryocautery, using the Kelman Cryostylet, is described. On rabbit eyes this brings about a statistically significant lowering of intraocular pressure and reduction of aqueous flow over an observation period of three months. The effects upon the facility of outflow are variable. Side effects are minimal. The intraocular temperature was measured at various points during and after cryocautery. An applicator temperature of about -40° C was found sufficient for the desired result with minimal side effects. Angiocryocautery of one or both long posterior ciliary vessels resulted only in a temporary reduction of intraocular pressure, as permanent obliteration of …
