Somatostatin: Diverse Physiological Roles And Therapeutic Implications, Gordon C. Weir, S. Bonner Weir Jan 1977

Somatostatin: Diverse Physiological Roles And Therapeutic Implications, Gordon C. Weir, S. Bonner Weir

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

In its brief lifetime as a known peptide, somatostatin has provided a truly remarkable story filled with surprising developments from unexpected quarters. The foundation was set in 1969, when Krulich and McCann reported that fractions of a crude hypothalamic extract inhibited the secretion of growth hormone. In 1973, Guillemin's laboratory reported the sequence and synthesis of a fourteen amino acid peptide with the same inhibitory effect. It occurs in both a cyclic and linear form, each displaying equal biological activity. Somatostatin was assigned as its name, but it is also commonly referred to as growth hormone release inhibitory factor (GHRIF) …

Familial Occurrence Of Pierre Robin Anomalad, Wendy O. Segreti, Peter Mamunes Jan 1977

Familial Occurrence Of Pierre Robin Anomalad, Wendy O. Segreti, Peter Mamunes

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

We have presented a family in which three children (1 male and 2 females) who had two different fathers were affected with the Pierre Robin anomalad. The mother exhibits some of the characteristic stigmata of this syndrome which strongly suggests that an autosomal dominant from of the Pierre Robin anomalad exists with variable expressivity.

Nutrition: Facts, Fallacies And Implications For Women Concerned With Development, Anne M.S. Coles

Faculty Book Chapters

The seminar from which these papers flow was the product of many minds, multiple energies and much co-operation during the many months prior to its final implementation. The idea of a women's seminar oriented to the issues and concerns of contemporary Egyptian society was initially put forth in the fal I of 1974 to coincide with efforts that were developing on a national level in Egypt to commemorate 1975 as International Women's Year. It is with deepest gratitude that I extend special appreciation to Mrs. Marlene Michel Anawati, then a Post Master's Fellow in the Department of SociologyAnthropology and Psychology. …

Some Basics Of Marron Production, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia Jan 1977

Some Basics Of Marron Production, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

marron are native to the South-West of Western Australia, and are keenly sought by inland fisher-men. However, supplies do not equal the apparent demand.

One solution is to cultivate marron in farm dams, or more intensively as a commercial enterprise.

This article suggests a few guidelines for marron production.

Understanding The Health And Social Service Needs Of People Over Age 65, Laurence G. Branch Jan 1977

Understanding The Health And Social Service Needs Of People Over Age 65, Laurence G. Branch

Center for Survey Research Publications

The complexity of the issues involved with providing appropriate health care and social services from the appropriate setting to people over age 65 can hardly be overstated. One of the present debates in the field focuses on the value of institutions as the customary setting for providing health care; the arguments are based on considerations of economic efficiency and the recipient's quality of life. Some of the debators suggest deinstitutionalizing as many of the health care recipients as possible, while simultaneously upgrading the quality and quantity of home based support services. The logic of deinstitutionalization is often buttressed by claims …

Children With Porencephaly: A Study Of Services, Dana Kaufman, Elisabeth Mason

Dissertations and Theses

This study was conducted to serve as a follow-up of services received and/or needed by families with children who have been identified by Crippled Children's Division of the University of Oregon Health Sciences Center as having porencephaly, usually a severe form of brain damage. Porencephaly refers to cystic cavities or lesions in the brain caused by a prenatal insult to the brain resulting in varying degrees of motor and mental deficits. Reaction Of Brain Hexokinase With Tetranitromethane: Oxidation Of Essential Thiol Groups, Subbarao Bondada, Umakant W. Kenkare Jan 1977

Reaction Of Brain Hexokinase With Tetranitromethane: Oxidation Of Essential Thiol Groups, Subbarao Bondada, Umakant W. Kenkare

Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

Treatment of bovine brain mitochondrial hexokinase with a fivefold molar excess of tetranitromethane (TNM) at pH 8.0 results in a complete loss of activity of the enzyme. Spectral measurements and amino acid analysis showed that only cysteinyl residues were modified by TNM under these conditions. The products of the reaction of TNM with the enzyme were cysteic acid and disulfides as found by amino acid analysis of the carboxymethylated hexokinase. Failure of 2-mercaptoethanol to reverse the effect of TNM suggested that the thiol group that is oxidized to cysteic acid is the one essential for enzyme activity. Substrates glucose and …

Invertebrate Glycoprotein-Induced Inflammation In Rats, Deborah I. Asrican Bailey

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The present program of research, therefore, was designed to attempt to gain new insights into the possible etiology of inflammatory states - for when new information concerning the etiology of these diseases states becomes available, more meaningful screening procedures for anti-inflammatory drugs will certainly be devised. Women In Menopause: A Study Of Gynecologist's Perceptions, Zadell Cogan, Sharon Kennedy

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to explore the needs of women experiencing menopause. Since women at this time experience physical, social and emotional changes, they may have a special need for services. Doctors were selected as the population for study because they treat so many women at this age and because they are powerful transmitters of our culture. This exploratory study was designed to provide descriptive information about the doctors' perceptions.

Results are reported from interviews with seventeen gynecologists from the Portland metropolitan area in Oregon. Attempts were made to interview all female gynecologists in the area. Male gynecologists …
