Works on Radiation Effects: 1990-2020
Includes great material & notes eg, "ADW and CL returned to Semipalatinsk with BT’s car and driver. Unfortunately while returning they hit a patch of ice and ended up in a snowy ditch. Fortunately this occurred near one of the few villages along the way and a passing truck was able to pull them out. The good reflexes and driving skills of the driver kept them from overturning. ML and MR hired a car and driver from Kuchartov and returned later after completing the hospital survey" I (ADW) gave the drive $100 for pulling us out it was below zero …

A Literature Review Of The Results Of Traditional Versus Accelerated Anterior Cruciate Ligament (Acl) Rehabilitation In Treatment Following Acl Reconstruction, Cara L. Conway
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
In recent years, the rehabilitation of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) has undergone changes in its protocol. The changes in ACL rehabilitation protocol are due to clinical observations and trends in ACL rehabilitation across the country. The traditional and presently used accelerated ACL rehabilitation programs are not much different in the activities performed as in the time frames when each activity is permitted.
The main purpose of this literature review is to provide material for clinicians to have accurate and recent knowledge of ACL rehabilitation. This knowledge will allow the clinician to provide the best and most beneficial treatment to …

Bone Absorptiometry In Metabolic Bone Disease: Baseline Values And Long-Term Treatment With Calcitriol (Post-Menopausal Osteoporosis Versus Osteomalacia), A. Caniggia, B. Frediani
Bone Absorptiometry In Metabolic Bone Disease: Baseline Values And Long-Term Treatment With Calcitriol (Post-Menopausal Osteoporosis Versus Osteomalacia), A. Caniggia, B. Frediani
Cells and Materials
Total body bone absorptiometry reveals low mineral density in both postmenopausal osteoporosis and osteomalacia patients. The method was used to investigate the effect of calcitriol administration on patients suffering from one of these conditions. In osteomalacia, the administration of calcitriol resulted in a dramatic improvement in bone mineral density (sometimes up to 50% in 12 months), indicating the rapid mineralization of previously uncalcified bone tissue as a result of the normalization of the Ca x P product. In osteoporosis a similar treatment was seen to halt the progressive decrease in bone mineral levels and sometimes resulted in minor increases in …

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications
In May 1993, an outbreak of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome( HPS) occurred in the south-western United States. A case-control study determined risk factors for HPS. Seventeen case-patients were compared with 3 groups of controls: members of case-patient households( household controls), members of neighboring households( near controls), and members of randomly selected households ≥ 24 km away ( far controls). Investigators trapped more small rodents at case households than at near ( P = .03) or far control households( P = .02). After the number of small rodents was controlled for,case-patients were more likely than household controls to hand plow (odds ratio …

Isolation And Characterization Of A B-D-Glucuronidase-Producing Strain Of Escherichia Coli Serotype O157:H7 In The United States, Peggy S. Hayes, Kristina Blom, Peter Feng, Jay Lewis, Nancy A. Strockbine, Bala Swaminathan
United States Public Health Resources
A phenotypic variant of Escherichia coli serotype O157:H7 (G5101) was isolated from a patient with bloody diarrhea. Strain G5101 does not ferment sorbitol but is β-D-glucuronidase and urease positive. Serotyping and colony hybridization using a serotype-specific DNA probe confirmed that the isolate was O157:H7. G5101 produces Shiga-like toxins I and II and contains an eae gene that is highly conserved in the O157:H7 serotype. This strain would have been missed by laboratories that screen for the sorbitol-negative, β-D-glucuronidase- negative phenotype in isolating E. coli O157:H7 from clinical and food specimens.

Fulminant Hepatic Failure: Summary Of A Workshop, Jay Hoofnagle, Robert Carithers Jr., Craig Shapiro, Nancy Ascher
United States Public Health Resources
Fulminant hepatic failure (FHF) is defined by the appearance of severe liver injury with hepatic encephalopathy in a previously healthy person. There are an estimated 2,000 cases of FHF in the United States yearly, representing 0.1% of all deaths and, perhaps, 6% of liver related deaths. The causes of FHF are many, the chief ones in the United States being hepatitis A; B; non-A, non-B and drug induced liver disease. There are no specific therapies for FHF, however, liver transplantation is recommended for situations in which spontaneous recovery appears unlikely. Factors that are valuable in assessing the likelihood of spontaneous …

CRVAW Faculty Journal Articles
Objective: To identify the impact of dietary intake and activity level on postpartum weight change.
Methods: White (n = 121) and black (n = 224) women, 7-12 months postpartum, participating in the Special Supplemental Feeding Program for Women, Infants, and Children were assessed for dietary intake, activity level, body weight, and other maternal characteristics.
Results: For both black and white women, the most important variables in predicting postpartum weight loss were pre-pregnancy weight, gestational weight gain, parity, and prenatal exercise. After these factors were controlled, race predicted that black women retained 6.4 lb more than white women. These results may …
Futility And The Principle Of Medical Futility: Safeguarding Autonomy And The Prohibition Against Cruel And Unusual Punishment, George P. Smith Ii
Futility And The Principle Of Medical Futility: Safeguarding Autonomy And The Prohibition Against Cruel And Unusual Punishment, George P. Smith Ii
Scholarly Articles
Administering futile medical treatment is tantamount to inflicting cruel and unusual punishment on a patient and an abridgement of his rights of self-determination. It is incumbent upon physicians to recognize that they should accept the imposition of an affirmative legal, professional, moral and ethical duty not to prescribe a modality of treatment that falls clearly within the scope of being considered futile, freakish, or tortious under the provisions of Eighth Amendment to the Constitution. When medical treatment is classified as "futile," it frees the physician from any duty to provide treatment. While most reasonable persons agree with this proposition, much …

A Differential Overview Of Self-Directed Low Back Exercise Programs, Micheal G. Bateman
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
Patients with low back pain represent a large percentage of the population frequenting today's clinics. Despite the high prevalence of low back pain in today's clinical setting, it is considered one of the most difficult diagnoses to treat. While practitioners in the field of physical therapy employ a diversity of evaluation and treatment techniques, they all share one common denominator, the goal of limiting pain while improving function and quality of life. Many therapists subscribe to a treatment approach which involves the patient in active individualized self-treatment exercises. Controversy exists as to which treatment approach is most effective and whether …
Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness, Bryan L. Guthmiller
Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness, Bryan L. Guthmiller
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
Delayed-onset muscular soreness (DOMS), the sensation of pain and stiffness in the muscles that occurs from 1-5 days following unaccustomed exercise, can adversely affect muscle performance, both from voluntary reduction of effort and from inherent loss of capacity of the muscles to produce force. This exercise-induced muscle damage causes a response that can be characterized by a cascade of metabolic events. Increased circulating neutrophils and interleukin-1 occurs within 24 hours after the exercise, with skeletal muscle levels remaining elevated for a much longer time. Several theories underlying the physiological mechanisms of DOMS have been proposed. The majority of evidence contradicts …
Ergogenic Aids For Athletes, Eric Kamimura
Ergogenic Aids For Athletes, Eric Kamimura
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
The use of ergogenic aids is widespread, with users ranging from recreational to professional athletes. Perhaps the Olympics has received more publicity regarding the use of ergogenic aids than any other athletic event.
It is widely understood that anabolic steroids and other drugs can be very dangerous. As a result, more and more athletes are seeking safer alternative methods in order to enhance athletic performance. With this attitude, a number of athletes are purchasing protein, multi vitamin/mineral, and carbohydrate supplements as well as other ergogenic aids in the belief that these supplements will improve their athletic performance. However, some of …

A Review Of The Sacroiliac Joint With Emphasis On Evaluation And Treatment, Rachele Reber
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
Low back pain is a common reason for referral to physical therapy. Although the role of the sacroiliac joint in low back pain remains controversial, many physical therapists frequently evaluate and treat biomechanical lesions of the sacroiliac joint. It is important to have keen evaluation skills to pinpoint the type of sacroiliac joint lesion present. Having a good knowledge and understanding of the anatomy, movement, and function of the joint will aid the therapist to correlate the findings of the evaluation with the proper treatment regimen. The purpose of this independent study is to describe current evaluation techniques, pathological conditions, …
Debridement Teaching Aid, Katharine E. Ward
Debridement Teaching Aid, Katharine E. Ward
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
Physical therapists treat patients with wounds. Debridement is one area of wound care which physical therapists frequently perform. Debridement is a particularly difficult skill to learn in the classroom due to the inability to simulate authentic conditions.
This study is intended to be a debridement teaching aid in the physical therapy classroom and/or the professional setting. Written text discusses the classification, healing, assessment, debridement, and dressing of wounds. Photographs of wounds and wound care clarify the written text.
The purpose of this teaching module is to help students and professional staff feel more comfortable with wound care and debridement upon …
