Difficulties In Recognizing And Treating Depression In The Elderly : Implications For Counselors, Kristin A. Schloemer Jan 2004

Difficulties In Recognizing And Treating Depression In The Elderly : Implications For Counselors, Kristin A. Schloemer

Graduate Research Papers

Diagnosing elderly depression is a difficult, overlooked process. Many elderly seek out family physicians, but few visit mental healthcare professionals (Lyness et al., 1997; Sable & Dunn, 2002). When assessing elderly depression, it is important for counselors to be aware of symptoms, ensuring correct treatment.

According to Friedrich ( 1999), it is difficult for healthcare professionals, including counselors, to diagnose depression in the elderly. As elderly may not display traditional depressive symptoms, it is necessary to distinguish between depression, bereavement, and illness, all common in late life. Once depression has been diagnosed, treatments including: medication, psychotherapy, or perhaps the most …

Behavioral Intervention And Prevention Of Feeding Difficulties In Infants And Toddlers, Mary Louise Kerwin, P. S. Eicher Jan 2004

Behavioral Intervention And Prevention Of Feeding Difficulties In Infants And Toddlers, Mary Louise Kerwin, P. S. Eicher

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

Although eating is considered an automatic physiologic process, many children experience feeding difficulties. The purpose of this paper is to provide a framework for assessment, treatment and prevention of feeding difficulties in children. Identification and treatment of any factors actively interfering with feeding success is a critical cornerstone for effective behavioral interventions for feeding. Using variables that comprise the structure of a meal, this paper discusses how these variables might be manipulated in behavioral interventions for feeding problems. Recommendations for prevention of feeding problems are also presented.

An Interdisciplinary Learning Experience Through Applied Clinical Practice With Community Volunteers, Dana Howell, Nancy Devine, Lisa Portsman Jan 2004

An Interdisciplinary Learning Experience Through Applied Clinical Practice With Community Volunteers, Dana Howell, Nancy Devine, Lisa Portsman

Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy Faculty and Staff Research

Allied health professionals typically begin working on an interdisciplinary health care team immediately upon entering the workforce. Interdisciplinary health care teams are believed to be cost-effective, to result in better patient outcomes, and to lower staff burnout and turnover. Although teamwork often is standard practice in the workplace, allied health students may receive little to no formal training in working with other professionals while in school. Instead, it may be assumed that this knowledge is inherent or that developing the skills necessary to work as part of a team while on clinical affiliation or postgraduation is acceptable.

The Relationship Among The Types, Frequency And Resolution Of Moral Conflicts Perceived By Nurses In West Virginia And Their Educational Preparation, Educational Needs, And Selected Demographics, Nancy K. Dunn Jan 2004

The Relationship Among The Types, Frequency And Resolution Of Moral Conflicts Perceived By Nurses In West Virginia And Their Educational Preparation, Educational Needs, And Selected Demographics, Nancy K. Dunn

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Technological changes, interpersonal relationships, and scarce resources have created a complex environment for health professionals. Nurses, as the largest group of health care providers, are confronted with moral issues when dealing with managed care policies, end-of-life care and workplace or institutional issues. Moral issues are expressed as moral distress, which has been linked to decreased satisfaction, termination of employment and leaving the profession of nursing altogether. Moral distress, therefore, decreases the number of nurses and contributes to the critical nursing shortage. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships, if any, among the types, frequency and resolution of …

Bulimia: Medical Complications, Philip S. Mehler, Cynthia Crews, Kenneth Weiner Jan 2004

Bulimia: Medical Complications, Philip S. Mehler, Cynthia Crews, Kenneth Weiner

Nursing Faculty Publications

Bulimia nervosa is a common eating disorder that predominantly affects young women. There are three main models of purging in bulimia. Resulting medical complications are related to the particular mode and frequency of purging. Commonly, there are oral and gastrointestinal complications along with serious electrolyte and endocrine complications. The majority of the medical complications of bulimia nervosa are treatable if diagnosed in a timely fashion. Some of these patients require inpatient hospitalization, and others can be managed along a continuum of outpatient care. The American Psychiatric Association has comprehensive treatment guidelines for the management of bulimia. Primary care physicians and …

Pressure Ulcer Development And Prevention In Long-Term Care Facilities In Virginia: A Descriptive Survey, Audrey D. Arthur Jan 2004

Pressure Ulcer Development And Prevention In Long-Term Care Facilities In Virginia: A Descriptive Survey, Audrey D. Arthur

Community & Environmental Health Theses & Dissertations

The development of pressure ulcers is a common occurrence among older persons who may be temporarily immobilized or confined to a bed. An estimated 60,000 deaths annually can be attributed to complications from pressure ulcers. Guidelines recommended by the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research have been disseminated nationally and continue to be recommended as the standard of care for pressure ulcer prevention. In spite of the use of the recommended guidelines, pressure ulcer rates persist, suggesting there are other factors contributing to pressure ulcer development in long-term care facilities.

A survey was conducted to investigate which provider related …

Animals And Alternatives: Societal Expectations And Scientific Need, Alan M. Goldberg Jan 2004

Animals And Alternatives: Societal Expectations And Scientific Need, Alan M. Goldberg

Experimentation Collection

As Russell and Burch suggested more than 40 years ago, the most humane science is the best science. The path ahead is clear: pain and distress must be eliminated in animal experiments or reduced to an absolute minimum, and, as scientists, we must use the most humane approaches in our research. To accomplish the best science, we must train those who come after us in the principles and practice of humane science.

Transmission Of Transmissible Mink Encephalopathy To Raccoons (Procyon Lotor) By Intracerebral Inoculation, Amir N. Hamir, Janice M. Miller, Katherine I. O'Rourke, Jason C. Bartz, Mick J. Stack, Melanie J. Chaplin Jan 2004

Transmission Of Transmissible Mink Encephalopathy To Raccoons (Procyon Lotor) By Intracerebral Inoculation, Amir N. Hamir, Janice M. Miller, Katherine I. O'Rourke, Jason C. Bartz, Mick J. Stack, Melanie J. Chaplin

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

To determine the transmissibility of transmissible mink encephalopathy (TME) agent to raccoons and to provide information about clinical course, lesions, and suitability of currently used diagnostic procedures for detection of transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) in raccoons, 4 raccoon kits were inoculated intracerebrally with a brain suspension from mink experimentally infected with TME. One uninoculated raccoon kit served as a control. All 4 animals in the TME-inoculated group showed clinical signs of neurologic disorder and were euthanized between 21 and 23 weeks postinoculation (PI). Necropsy examinations revealed no gross lesions. Spongiform encephalopathy was observed by light microscopy, and the presence of …

Challenges For Reducing Inequities In Health And Healthcare For The 21st Century, Osman Galal, Roberto De Vogli Jan 2004

Challenges For Reducing Inequities In Health And Healthcare For The 21st Century, Osman Galal, Roberto De Vogli

International Journal of Global Health and Health Disparities

Human life expectancy during the time of the Roman Empire was approximately 28 years. In 1990, global life expectancy had increased to 65 years. The advances in life expectancy in the 20th century were remarkable by any standard. Although many factors contributed to this enhanced life expectancy, including medical technologies, by far the largest proportion of the increase occurred as a consequence of economic growth, rising living standards and nutrition. Despite the large improvements in terms of life expectancy, significant health variations still remain between countries and across different socioeconomic classes with in countries. As the 20th century proceeded, a …

Breast Feeding And Childhood Obesity, Ashley R. Mckenna Jan 2004

Breast Feeding And Childhood Obesity, Ashley R. Mckenna

International Journal of Global Health and Health Disparities

Obesity is an epidemic in today's "obesogenic" society, a society that encourages excess food consumption but also idealizes thinness (Golan & Crow, 2004). One at-risk population that is gathering much attention, and much concern, is children. Obesity is the most frequent nutritional disorder in children (von Kries et al., 1999). Recent numbers indicate that the prevalence of obesity in children (ages six-11) has doubled, from seven percent in 1980 to 15.3 percent in 2000; the prevalence for adolescents (ages 12-19) has tripled, from five percent in 1980 to 15.5 percent in 2000 (AOA, 2004).

Socioeconomic Status And Domestic Violence, Disa K. V. Lubker

International Journal of Global Health and Health Disparities

Domestic violence is pandemic and affects women and families all over the world. It involves the "systematic use of violence and abuse to gain power over and to control a partner of ex-partner (DVIP)." Forms of domestic violence include any physical or sexual contact, aggression or violence that is unwanted and may take the form of threats, harassment, verbal abuse, hitting, kicking, etc. (DVIP). It is estimated that 20 to 50 percent of the world's female population will be victims of domestic violence (Feminist Majority), and in the United States, it is estimated that at some point in their lives, …

The Ehealth Behavior Management Model: A Stage-Based Approach To Behavior Change And Management, Robert J. Bensley, Nelda Mercer, John J. Brusk, Ric Underhile, Jason Rivas, Judith Anderson, Deanne Kelleher, Melissa Lupella, André C. De Jager

Human Performance and Health Education Faculty Research

Although the Internet has become an important avenue for disseminating health information, theory-driven strategies for aiding individuals in changing or managing health behaviors are lacking. The eHealth Behavior Management Model combines the Transtheoretical Model, the behavioral intent aspect of the Theory of Planned Behavior, and persuasive communication to assist individuals in negotiating the Web toward stage-specific information. It is here — at the point of stage-specific information — that behavioral intent in moving toward more active stages of change occurs.

The eHealth Behavior Management Model is applied in three demonstration projects that focus on behavior management issues: parent-child nutrition education …

Bovine Tuberculosis In Swedish Farmed Deer: Detection And Control Of The Disease, Helene Wahlström Jan 2004

Bovine Tuberculosis In Swedish Farmed Deer: Detection And Control Of The Disease, Helene Wahlström

Michigan Bovine Tuberculosis Bibliography and Database

Bovine tuberculosis (BTB) was introduced into Swedish farmed deer herds in 1987. Epidemiological investigations showed that 10 deer herds had become infected (July 1994) and a common source of infection, a consignment of 168 imported farmed fallow deer, was identified (I).

As trace-back of all imported and in-contact deer was not possible, a control program, based on tuberculin testing, was implemented in July 1994. As Sweden has been free from BTB since 1958, few practicing veterinarians had experience in tuberculin testing. In this test, result relies on the skill, experience and conscientiousness of the testing veterinarian. Deficiencies in performing the …

Relationship Between Early Feeding And Communication Development In Infants: Birth To 12 Months, S J. Massey, Kathryn Hird, K Simmer Jan 2004

Relationship Between Early Feeding And Communication Development In Infants: Birth To 12 Months, S J. Massey, Kathryn Hird, K Simmer

Medical Conference Papers

Introduction: Anecdotal reports suggest that infants experiencing early feeding difficulties may have delays in communication development.

Methods: The first stage of the study involved the development of a theoretically based assessment protocol to test the hypothesis of linked or independent processes required for feeding and speech. The assessment protocol will be piloted on 10 full term and 10 preterm infants at birth, 4, 8 and 12 months post term age. Measures of inter-judge and intra-judge reliability will also be taken of the observation protocol. Observation of the infant's language, speech, environment and maternal relationship will also be conducted to determine …
