Application Of Theory To Guide Development Of A Rehabilitation Service-Learning Project In Guatemala, Mary Zadnik, Suzanne Trotter, Cindy Mathena
Journal of Occupational Therapy Education
International community-based rehabilitation service-learning projects in physical and occupational therapy education programs may impact underserved communities internationally. The intentional inclusion of learning in service activities has been identified as service-learning. Extending the impact and education beyond the service project is necessary in order to provide a sustainable outcome for the community. Faculty at the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences partnered with Potter’s House Association International to develop an interprofessional program to address the rehabilitation needs and continuity of care following a one-week project serving the community members of the Guatemalan City Garbage Dump. The purpose of this article …

Background: Drones have the ability to gather real time data cost effectively, to deliver payloads and have initiated the rapid evolution of many industrial, commercial, and recreational applications. Unfortunately, there has been a slower expansion in the field of medicine. This article provides a comprehensive review of current and future drone applications in medicine, in hopes of empowering and inspiring more aggressive investigation. Database: A literature search was performed by EBSCO (Elton B. Shared Decision-Making As Experienced By Rehabilitation Students On An International Service-Learning Trip: A Phenomenological Investigation, Mary Zadnik, Suzanne Trotter, Thomas Werner
Occupational Therapy Collection
The value of service-learning has been well documented in medical and allied health education (Abedini, Gruppen, Kolars, & Kumagai, 2012; Ekelman, Dal Bello-Haas, Bazyk, & Bazyk, 2003; Pechak, Gonzalez, Summers, & Capshaw, 2013; Pechak & Thompson, 2009; Ryan-Krause, 2016). Several studies have been conducted looking at cultural experiences and clinical reasoning (Corbett & Fickert, 2009; Sheppard & Landry, 2015; Nouvet, Chan & Schwartz, 2016). What has not been well-examined though is the concept of shared decision-making by those engaged in service-learning. The purpose of this phenomenological investigation (i.e. study) was to identify how occupational therapy (OT) and physical therapy (PT) …

Objective: to explore what research has been done regarding how nurse educators are impacted by adopting global health perspectives in nursing education and to suggest one potential way to add to this …
Comparing The Effects Of Immersion Service Learning And Local Service Learning In Pre-Licensure Health Care Students’ Transcultural Self-Efficacy, Kimberly Johnson
Comparing The Effects Of Immersion Service Learning And Local Service Learning In Pre-Licensure Health Care Students’ Transcultural Self-Efficacy, Kimberly Johnson
DNP Projects
Local and immersion service learning methods prepare pre-licensure health care professionals to deliver culturally competent care to diverse populations- an important need because of the rapid racial and ethnic diversity growth in the U.S. A mixed-methods approach compared the effect of local and immersion service learning methods on multiple disciplines of pre-licensure health care students’ confidence in delivering care to diverse populations. Guided by Jeffreys (2016) CCC Model, the Transcultural Self Efficacy Tool (TSET) was used to compare pre-licensure health care students’ (n=34) transcultural self-efficacy perceptions following local or immersion service learning experiences. Secondary source, qualitative data obtained from …

Disability And Physical Therapy Services In Rural Nicaragua: A Pilot Study, Evan M. Pucillo, Edward C. O'Bryan
Disability And Physical Therapy Services In Rural Nicaragua: A Pilot Study, Evan M. Pucillo, Edward C. O'Bryan
Physical Therapy Collection
The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 15% of the world’s population is living with disability, a large majority of which can be found in developing nations. Previous studies in Nicaragua have investigated the perceptions of disability among caregivers and noted limited access to rehabilitative services. However, the general knowledge and perceptions of physical therapy services in Nicaragua remains unclear. As a result, this pilot study sought to explore the local knowledge and perceptions of disability and physical therapy services and to characterize the sample from a remote area of northwestern Nicaragua. Participants were recruited using convenience sampling during multidisciplinary …

Learning Cultural Humility Through Stories And Global Service-Learning, Stephanie Fisher, Eloise Hockett, Linda Samek
Learning Cultural Humility Through Stories And Global Service-Learning, Stephanie Fisher, Eloise Hockett, Linda Samek
Faculty Publications - College of Nursing
Service-learning experiences are often utilized by nursing programs in efforts to increase the cultural competence of nursing students. Through the use of sharing story, the concepts of cultural competence and cultural humility can be explained for students preparing for upcoming intercultural experiences. This case study describes the experience of nursing students and university faculty on their first service-learning trip to rural Kenya and how the intercultural issues were navigated there as students developed characteristics of cultural humility. This story is now being shared in preparations for subsequent international trips with nursing students and can be a model for programs wanting …

Medium To Long Term Impacts On Former Participants Of The Shoulder To Shoulder Global Brigades To Ecuador, Craig Borie
Theses and Dissertations--Community & Leadership Development
Medium to Long Term Impacts on Former Participants of the Shoulder to Shoulder Global Brigades to Ecuador. International service learning and voluntourism programs in global health evoke benefits for both community and the intervener. While it is clear that the Shoulder to Shoulder Global program at the University of Kentucky provides a service to an economically resource poor community in Santo Domingo, Ecuador, what is unclear is the impact these interprofessional experiences have on the participants that travel with the four times a year health brigades. This study proposes to answer the question of what are the educational, personal and …

Athletic Trainers’ Knowledge Of Legal Practice Within Information Technology And Social Media, Elizabeth R. Neil, Zachary K. Winkelmann, Lindsey E. Eberman
Journal of Sports Medicine and Allied Health Sciences: Official Journal of the Ohio Athletic Trainers Association
Purpose: As healthcare and technology continue to connect in daily practice, athletic trainers (ATs) must be knowledgeable of the governing acts for ethical and legal clinical practice. This is vital to ensure ethical and legal practice as a clinician and protection of confidential protected health information (PHI). The objective of this study was to assess certified athletic trainers’ knowledge of regulations within technology and social media (SoMe). Methods: Certified ATs were recruited from the National Athletic Trainers’ Association membership database. Respondents completed an instrument of 28 questions, including 16 participant demographics, clinical site demographics, SoMe usage and general questions, and …
Cultural Competency In Effective Medical Missions, Abigail Drogosz
Cultural Competency In Effective Medical Missions, Abigail Drogosz
Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium
Abstract
Background: Every year medical professionals and volunteers travel internationally to provide services to individuals in need. However, some times these trips can be more detrimental than helpful. This can be due to the fact that these trips are self-serving in which they provide value for visitors without meeting the local community needs (Unite for Site, 2015). Secondly, they raise unmet expectations due to language barriers or lack of medical training for particular diseases. In addition, they may provide culturally irrelevant or inadequate care to the communities they are serving. Lastly, these missions may not follow current standards of health …

As many of you know, this is the last Newsleer that I will be working on for the Communication Sciences and Disorders Department (CSD). My new role as Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs at Molloy College will not allow me the opportunity to continue in a full time faculty position in CSD. While I am excited about the challenges I face in my new position, I am very sad to leave my daily interactions with friends, colleagues, and students in CSD. It has been a long, fruitful, and enjoyable career in this program. I have had the pleasure of …
