Public Health Leadership In The Philippines: Effective Approaches In Malaria Surveillance, Gethro Nullan

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Leadership traits that affect and shape cost-effective practices ensure the long-term

growth and success for any organization. The purpose of this single case study was to explore leadership traits that may contribute to cost-effective approaches in a malaria surveillance program in the Philippines. The National Health Service Leadership Framework provided the conceptual framework for this study. Service-Learning Research For Development: An Option For The Poor In Practice Through Social Analysis And Community Engagement, Thomas M. Kelly, Kate L. Nolt Nov 2019

Service-Learning Research For Development: An Option For The Poor In Practice Through Social Analysis And Community Engagement, Thomas M. Kelly, Kate L. Nolt

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

A group of faculty, staff and students from Creighton University conducted a research project using a strengths-based approach to create a community health needs assessment (CNHA) in the fall of 2017. The instruments, including a survey to determine health status, a focus group questionnaire, an environmental scan and an individual interview instrument, were developed to help shift the paradigm from which many international medical missions are conducted with Creighton’s community partner in the Dominican Republic, the Centro de Educación para la Salud Integral (CESI). In the process of creating, developing, implementing, assessing and reformulating this strength-based CHNA, researchers encountered both …

Examination Of Reflections From Nurse Anesthesia Trainee Volunteers In Honduras, Thomas M. Boyce Aug 2019

Examination Of Reflections From Nurse Anesthesia Trainee Volunteers In Honduras, Thomas M. Boyce

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

There is a lack of surgical and anesthesia services in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) which creates an increased burden of disease from otherwise surgically treatable conditions. Nurse anesthesia trainees (NATs) can serve to fill this lack of anesthesia services while also gaining real life experience that can enhance their training. Identifying common experiences and barriers among NATs that have volunteered on a surgical brigade is important to understand the benefits experienced by NATs and to increase volunteer surgical brigade programs among nurse anesthesia programs. A retrospective thematic analysis of 23 written reflections of NATs who participated in a one-week …

The Impact Of Cleft Lip/Palate And Clp Surgical Intervention On The Social Integration Of Adolescents In India, Mustafa Zahid May 2019

The Impact Of Cleft Lip/Palate And Clp Surgical Intervention On The Social Integration Of Adolescents In India, Mustafa Zahid

Master's Theses

Cleft Lip/Palate, a congenital orofacial anomaly, carries an incidence rate of approximately 1 in every 1000 births. In addition to the stigma associated with the condition, the varying levels of cleft severity might result in lower life outcomes which could include lower cognitive ability, physical and psychological well-being, social and behavioral outcomes of adolescents. This paper focuses on the social integration element of life outcomes, which is composed of the social inclusion and prosocial behavior of the adolescent. Despite the affordability of restorative surgeries, patients in rural areas of Low and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) such as India face accessibility and …

Preparing For A Short-Term Volunteer Experience, Beth Sullivan Mar 2019

Preparing For A Short-Term Volunteer Experience, Beth Sullivan

Occupational Therapy Collection

Occupational Therapy (OT) practitioners who volunteer for short-term medical service trips in developing countries face many challenges, including gaining an appreciation of that country's culture (values, economy, political, and medical systems) and understanding how these factors influence provision of OT services.

As OT practitioners, we "contribute to the global health of society and individuals by enabling the right to engage in meaningful, purposeful occupations" (World Federation of Occupational Therapists, n.d., para 4). The frequency of short-term medical service trips (STMST) undertaken by persons living in high income countries to low income countries is increasing (Sykes, 2014). Despite this fact, systematic …

Understanding Public Perception Of Telemedicine, Carolyn Majkrzak, Sarah Strenke, Katie Vraspir Jan 2019

Understanding Public Perception Of Telemedicine, Carolyn Majkrzak, Sarah Strenke, Katie Vraspir

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The healthcare system in the United States is struggling to meet the needs of a growing patient population amidst the burden of provider shortages and rising costs, where no simple or easy answer exists. However, telemedicine has emerged as a possible solution with well documented benefits such as increasing provider coverage and saving costs. Despite the proven benefits, many people do not use telemedicine and there is little data to answer why it is underutilized. Therefore, this study sought to understand the public’s perception of telemedicine service. It was hypothesized that gender, age, number of children in the household, education …

Barriers To Sexual And Reproductive Health Care Access In Central America With A Focus On Modern Contraception, Maria Mccoshen Jan 2019

Barriers To Sexual And Reproductive Health Care Access In Central America With A Focus On Modern Contraception, Maria Mccoshen

Theses and Graduate Projects

Reproductive health is an important indicator of overall population health and is a priority of international organizations such as the United Nations (UN) and the World Health Organization (WHO). The UN includes the right to sexual and reproductive health (SRH) in their international covenant on rights stating, “...a woman’s reproductive option is considered a basic human right”. This paper will evaluate whether SRH, specifically modern contraceptive access, is met throughout areas of Central America, with a focus on the country of Costa Rica.

Servant Leadership Towards Cultural Competency And Critical Thinking: A Mixed Methods Study In Zambia, Jill Marie Brown Jan 2019

Servant Leadership Towards Cultural Competency And Critical Thinking: A Mixed Methods Study In Zambia, Jill Marie Brown

Occupational Therapy Program Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

There is a paucity of occupational therapy literature related to the professional development process that occurs when students participate in immersive, international servant leadership experiences in developing countries. A scarcity of literature exists on how such culturally rich experiences can influence the development of the participating students’ dispositional critical thinking and cultural competency skill sets. This mixed methods study depicts how a 3-week servant leadership experience in Zambia, Africa, measured the acquisition of dispositional critical thinking and cultural competency skill sets in novice to experienced occupational therapy students. Moreover, this study infuses a constructivist grounded theory approach to uncover a …
