The Nucleus Of A Public Health Strategy To Combat Aids, Lawrence O. Gostin Jan 1986

The Nucleus Of A Public Health Strategy To Combat Aids, Lawrence O. Gostin

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Since acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) was first identified in I98I, its rate of spread among a primarily young and vibrant population has chilled the medical and lay communities. Today, the public response is sober and oriented toward the examination of specific policies that could lessen the impact of the disease. After six years' experience it is now feasible to propose a strategy for combating AIDS. Consensus around the policies outlined in this article should form the nucleus of the public health strategy to combat AIDS before the intervention of an effective vaccine or treatment.

Intraocular Lens Implant Image Quality: The Optico-Retinal Interface, David D. Bogorad Dec 1985

Intraocular Lens Implant Image Quality: The Optico-Retinal Interface, David D. Bogorad

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Improvements in intraocular lens implants during the past ten years have revolutionized cataract surgery. Both anterior and posterior chamber lenses are currently in wide use, but the optical superiority of the posterior chamber location has yet to be demonstrated. To do so, a more detailed analysis is required of visual function than is clinically routine. Also required is appreciation that the retina is an integral part of the eye's optical system because of its directional characteristics, which are known as the Stiles-Crawford effect. The optical quality of the pseudophakic eye is affected by the optics of the implant, its centration, …

Hereditary Sclerocornea, David Barsky, Steven P. Dunn Dec 1985

Hereditary Sclerocornea, David Barsky, Steven P. Dunn

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

A rare case of total hereditary sclerocornea is presented along with clinical history, histopathology, and a review of the possible pathogenesis and current literature on the subject. It is quite possible that imperfect cleavage of the anterior chamber angle may be the predisposing factor in scleralization of the cornea due to a failure of neural crest cell differentiation. If surgical intervention to correct for the corneal opacification is indicated, corneal transplantation should be performed as soon as possible after birth, similar to the indications for removal of dense congenital cataracts to avoid deprivation amblyopia.

The Effects Of Exercise On Cognitive Function In The Elderly, Pamela D. Thomas Aug 1985

The Effects Of Exercise On Cognitive Function In The Elderly, Pamela D. Thomas

MSN Research Projects

In order to determine the effect of exercise upon cognition of institutionalized elderly a quasi-experimental research approach was used. A sample of 20 was selected from two long-term care nursing facilities to make an experimental and a control group. The experimental group had a prescribed exercise plan followed by a cognition test while the control group received only the cognition test. The cognition test scores were analyzed using the ^ test statistic with a significance level of 0.05. Analysis of the data led the researcher to fail to reject the null hypothesis; however, a marginally significant trend for the experimental …

Haemophilus Influenzae In Adults: An Analysis Of Incidence, Serotype, Biotype, Beta-Lactamase Production And Clinical Spectrum, Mildred Ramsey Norris

MSN Research Projects

A selective medium, chocolate agar with vancomycin, bacitracin, and clindamycin, was used to enhance the recovery of Haemophilus influenzae from adult patients. Cultures of the 634 respiratory specimens yielded 130 (20.5 percent) H. influenzae isolates, representing 93 patients. The serotype, biotype, and Beta-lactamase production of all isolates were determined. Of 103 distinct isolates, nine percent were serotypable and included serogroups a ,b ,d ,and e. Although biotypes I, II, III, V, and VI were represented, 81.5 percent of the isolates were in the II/III group. Twenty-six percent of the isolates were Beta-lactamase producers and, therefore, ampicillin resistant. The clinical characteristics …

The Effect Of A Human Sexuality Course On Preteen Knowledge Of Sexuality, Margareta Connell

MSN Research Projects

This was a quasi-experimental study designed to deter mine the effectiveness of a planned sexual health teaching program for fifth grade students. The null hypothesis stated that when the sexual health knowledge of fifth grade students who participated in a sexual health teaching program was compared to the sexual health knowledge of fifth grade students who did not participate in a sexual health teaching program, there would be no significant difference. Subjects were selected from two different schools. School A was the experimental group and consisted of 36 students. School B was the control group and also included 36 students. …

The Survival Of Mesophilic And Thermophilic Bacteria Subjected To Uv Irradiation, Sajida A. Shaikh Aug 1985

The Survival Of Mesophilic And Thermophilic Bacteria Subjected To Uv Irradiation, Sajida A. Shaikh

Masters Theses

Survival curves were determined for the mesophile, Bacillus licheniformis and the thermophile, Bacillus stearothermophilus after subjecting the cells to ultraviolet irradiation. Cells were grown at 37°C for the mesophile and at 55°C for the thermophile.

At low UV exposure times, the thermophile was more resistant to UV irradiation (had a better survival rate) than was the case for the mesophile. At higher exposure times, the situation was reversed, the mesophile having a greater survival rate than the thermophile.

The effect of changes in the temperature during irradiation was also determined. Thermophiles were greatly affected by changes in temperature while the …

Factors Related To Perceptions Of Ethicalness In Behavior Modification, John C. Guthman Aug 1985

Factors Related To Perceptions Of Ethicalness In Behavior Modification, John C. Guthman

Masters Theses

This study examined perceptions of behavior modification held by undergraduate students enrolled in an introductory psychology course and editorial board members for the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis and for the journal Behavior Modification.

Editor reactions to several terms suggest that ambiguity with respect to the questionable behavior status of several techniques exists within the field. The results show that a large proportion of students, as compared with editors, are unclear as to which techniques constitute behavior modification. In this study, the accuracy of student identification of behavior modification techniques did not significantly relate to perceptions of ethicalness of behavior …

High Rates Of Photosynthesis In The Desert Shrub Chrysothamnus Nauseosus Ssp. Albicaulis, Tim D. Davis, N. Sankhla, W. R. Andersen, D. J. Weber, B. N. Smith

Great Basin Naturalist

Basic aspects of photosynthesis were investigated in white rubber rabbitbrush (Chrysothamnus nauseosus (Pallas) Britt. ssp. albicaulis), a common C3 deciduous shrub native to arid regions of the western U.S. Under favorable field conditions, net photosynthesis (Pn) ranged from 36 to 73 mg CO2 · dm −2 · hr−1, which is relatively high for a woody species. The leaves from the actively growing flowering shoots exhibited higher Pn than those on the vegetative shoots. Pn also varied according to the age of the leaves and the location of the plants. P …

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Digital subtraction angiography (DSA) produces high-contrast digital images of the abdominal vasculature with minimum patient discomfort. We summarize the Henry Ford Hospital experience with DSA in evaluating various abdominal vascular disorders. The methods and merits of intravenous and intraarterial approaches, the advantages and disadvantages compared with those of conventional angiography, and the current limitations of DSA are discussed.

Electrophysiology Of Flounder Intestinal Mucosa. I. Conductance Properties Ofthe Cellular And Paracellular Pathways, Dan R. Halm, Edward J. Krasny Jr., Raymond A. Frizzell

Neuroscience, Cell Biology & Physiology Faculty Publications

We evaluated the conductances for ion flow across the cellular and paracellular pathways of flounder intestine using microelectrode techniques and ion-replacement studies. Apical membrane conductance properties are dominated by the presence of Ba-sensitive K channels. An elevated mucosal solution K concentration, [K]m, depolarized the apical membrane potential (ψa) and, at [K]m less than 40 mM, the K dependence of ψa was abolished by 1-2 mM mucosal Ba. The basolateral membrane displayed Cl conductance behavior, as evidenced by depolarization of the basolateral membrane potential (ψb) with reduced serosal Cl concentrations, [Cl]s. …

Preliminary Experience With Digital Subtraction Angiography In Cardiac Evaluation, Matthew W. Burke, P. C. Shetty, Rajinder Sharma, James F. Brymer, Fareed Khaja

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

iVe report our initial experience using digital subtraction angiography (DSA) techniques for cardiac evaluation. DSA of the heart may be performed with intravenous or right atrial injection of contrast medium (IVDSA) and with left ventricular or aortic root contrast injection (lADSA). The right ventricle and the atria are best demonstrated by IVDSA, while the left ventricle and coronary arteries are best demonstrated by lADSA. The advantages and disadvantages of DSA ofthe bean are discussed. Present equipment limitations restrict the routine use of cardiac DSA, but these should be overcome with advances in technology.

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance: Current And Future Clinical Applications, Jerry W. Froelich, David O. Hearshen, Robert D. Halpert, Suresh Patel

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Nuclear magnetic resonance has evolved from a laboratory analytical tool to become a rapidly developing discipline in clinical medicine. We present a brief historical overview, an introduction to the basic principles of the phenomenon, and a statement of the current status of clinical imaging. We have elected to use the traditional terminology nuclear magnetic resonance to refer to the imaging component of the field rather than the American College of Radiology (ACR) modification magnetic resonance. We do this out of respect for the founders of the field.

Electrophysiology Of Flounder Intestinal Mucosa. Ii. Relation Of The Electrical Potential Profile To Coupled Nacl Absorption, Dan R. Halm, Edward J. Krasny Jr., Raymond A. Frizzell Jun 1985

Electrophysiology Of Flounder Intestinal Mucosa. Ii. Relation Of The Electrical Potential Profile To Coupled Nacl Absorption, Dan R. Halm, Edward J. Krasny Jr., Raymond A. Frizzell

Neuroscience, Cell Biology & Physiology Faculty Publications

We characterized the hyperpolarization of the electrical potential profile of flounder intestinal cells that accompanies inhibition of NaCl cotransport. Several observations indicate that hyperpolarization of ψa and ψb (Δψa,b) results from inhibition of NaCl entry across the apical membrane: (a) the response was elicited by replacement of mucosal solution Cl or Na by nontransported ions, and (b) mucosal bumetanide or serosal cGMP, inhibitors of NaCl influx, elicited Δψa,b and decreased the transepithelial potential (ψt) in parallel. Regardless of initial values, ψa and ψb approached the equilibrium potential for K (EK …

Lymph Flow In Newborn Lambs : Effects Of Change In Osmolality, Debra S. Wickman Jun 1985

Lymph Flow In Newborn Lambs : Effects Of Change In Osmolality, Debra S. Wickman

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Recent investigations have shown that volume loading and alterations in body fluid osmolality cause rapid shifts throughout the body's fluid compartments in the adult dog. The lymph system has been found to be a vital link in the body's ability to compensate for excess fluid, and thus provides a strong defense against edema formation (Brace and Power, 1981; 1983). There have been no previous studies dealing with the investigation of whole-body lymph flow responses in the newborn. The purpose of this experimental research was to perform a systematic study into the whole-body lymph responses of newborn lambs to the particular …

Psychosocial And Behavioral Characteristics Of Ischemic Heart Disease Patients: Their Measurement And Relationship To Adherence In An Intensive Nutrition Education Program, Lynn Caldwell Jun 1985

Psychosocial And Behavioral Characteristics Of Ischemic Heart Disease Patients: Their Measurement And Relationship To Adherence In An Intensive Nutrition Education Program, Lynn Caldwell

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Nonadherence to therapeutic regimens which necessitate major lifestyle change is recognized as one of the most serious problems in medical practice today. Attempts to prevent and control chronic disease, including the development and progression of cardiovascular disease, are only effective when recommendations to the patient are carried out. Few studies have systematically studied the relationship of psychosocial and behavioral factors to adherence outside the theoretical framework of a specific behavioral model; no study has done so with a carefully measured diet as the outcome variable in a controlled prospective clinical trial with patients suffering from cardiovascular disease.

This study, as …

A Study Of Transferable Antibiotic Resistance In Enteric Bacteria, Charles H. Regeski Jun 1985

A Study Of Transferable Antibiotic Resistance In Enteric Bacteria, Charles H. Regeski

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A group of 48 enteric bacteria was selected from a total of 170 at Loma Linda University Medical Center because of resistance to three or more antibiotics. They were examined to see if any of the antibiotic resistances were transferred by conjugation to either of two recipient bacteria. These were a restrictionless, antibiotic sensitive, azide resistant mutant of Escherichia coli K 12 designated E. coli 1228 and a similar phenotypic strain of Salmonella typhimurium LT2 designated LB 5000. Forty-three transferred one or more antibiotic resistances to either or both recipients, a frequency of 25.3% of the total bacteria and 89.6% …

Correlates Of Knowledge And Locus Of Control On Burden In Professional Caregivers Of Alzheimer's Disease Victims In Three Institution Types, Ruth A. Manning-Gay

Community & Environmental Health Theses & Dissertations

In assessing professional caregivers of Alzheimer's Disease victims, this study tested whether, 1) knowledge would influence perceptions of burden in providing care to such patients, and if 2) individual locus of control would influence perceptions of burden in caring for; Alzheimer's I patients. Professional nurses (BSN's, RN's, and LPN's) from nursing banes, hospitals and psychiatric facilities were asked to complete a three part survey. Three instruments were utilized in this study: the Burden Self-Interview by Zarit, Reeves and Bach-Peterson and adapted for professional caregivers, a 15 item knowledge quiz and the North Carolina Internal External scale (short form) by Schopler, …
