Phenyl Butyl Nitrone Compositions And Methods For Treatment Of Oxidative Tissue Damage, John M. Carney, Robert A. Floyd Jun 1991

Phenyl Butyl Nitrone Compositions And Methods For Treatment Of Oxidative Tissue Damage, John M. Carney, Robert A. Floyd

Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Patents

Compositions for treating tissue damage from ischemia contain PBN, or active derivatives thereof, which are active during ischemia in preventing ATP depletion of the cells which predisposes them to subsequent injury during reperfusion, and which are active during reperfusion as oxygen radical scavengers, in a suitable pharmaceutical carrier for systemic or local administration, especially to the CNS, spinal column and eyes. Based on animal studies, the dosage for treating damage due to stroke is in the range of 10 to 300 mg/kg. Similar dosages are useful in treating damage resulting from free radical generation during inflammation, either as a product …

Assessment Of Methylprednisolone Purging Efficacy On Daudi Burkitt Lymphoma Cells From Normal Bone Marrow, Nalini Janakiraman, Loreen M. Niewenhuis Jun 1991

Assessment Of Methylprednisolone Purging Efficacy On Daudi Burkitt Lymphoma Cells From Normal Bone Marrow, Nalini Janakiraman, Loreen M. Niewenhuis

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Studies on normal bone marrow and Daudi Burkitt lymphoma cells were performed to determine the efficacy of selective, in vitro chemopurging with methylprednisolone (MP). We found that MP reduces the numher of lymphoma cells without significant damage to bone marrow cells. This information is important because we need to improve the existing in vitro purging regimens used to cleanse autologous marrows of metastatic disease before transplantation into cancer patients who have received high-dose chemotherapy. Normal human bone marrow (NBM) and Daudi lymphoma cells were trealed in parallel with various purging regimens. NBM death was evaluated using soft-agar culture, while Daudi …

The Development Of Mental Health Services In Sub-Saharan Africa: The Case Of Rwanda, Froduald Gatarayiha, Franz Baro, Morton O. Wagenfeld, Rene Stockman Jun 1991

The Development Of Mental Health Services In Sub-Saharan Africa: The Case Of Rwanda, Froduald Gatarayiha, Franz Baro, Morton O. Wagenfeld, Rene Stockman

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This paper considers several aspects of the evolution, organization and current status of the mental health system of Rwanda. The centerpiece of the Rwandan mental health system is the neuropsychiatric hospital in Ndera. Resource constraints preclude development of an extensive system of specialty mental health care. The World Health Organization has proposed that mental health services can best be delivered in developing countries through decentralization and integration with primary health care services. The accomplishments and problems encountered in implementing this model in Rwanda are described and, based on this experience, some recommendations are offered for other developing countries.

Effect Of Delays In Processing On The Survival Of Mycobacterium Avium-M. Intracellulare In The Isolator Blood Culture System., C. Fordham Von Reyn, Stephen Hennigan, Sandra Niemczyk, Nicholas J. Jacobs

Dartmouth Scholarship

Concentrations of Mycobacterium avium-M. intracellulare ranging from 10(-1) to 10(3) CFU/ml were added to blood, placed in Isolator tubes, and held at room temperature for intervals ranging from 4 h to 56 days before being processed (centrifugation and culture on Middlebrook 7H10 agar). At all concentrations tested, M. avium-M. intracellulare was recovered after hold times ranging from 4 h to 7 days; the number of final CFU actually increased progressively for hold times of 8 h or more. Hold times of up to 7 days did not increase the time from processing to the first appearance of visible colonies. At …

Time Delay Neural Networks And Speech Recognition: Context Independence Of Stops In Different Vowel Environments, Gregory Andrew Makowski Jun 1991

Time Delay Neural Networks And Speech Recognition: Context Independence Of Stops In Different Vowel Environments, Gregory Andrew Makowski

Masters Theses

A series of speech recognition experiments was conducted to investigate time-dynamic speech recognition of stop consonants invariant of vowel environment using data from six talkers. The speech preprocessing was based on previous studies investigating acoustic characteristics which correlate to the place of articulation (Blumstein and Stevens 1979). The place of articulation features were statistically abstracted using four moments and the energy level of the speech sample.

Both statistical and neural network pattern recognition methods were used. Statistical methods included linear and quadratic discriminant functions, maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) and K-nearest neighbors (KNN). The neural network approach used was Time Delay …

Interleukin-2-Triggered Raf-1 Expression, Phosphorylation, And Associated Kinase Activity Increase Through G1 And S In Cd3-Stimulated Primary Human T Cells., Antanina Zmuidzinas, Harvey J. Mamon, Thomas M. Roberts, Kendall A. Smith May 1991

Interleukin-2-Triggered Raf-1 Expression, Phosphorylation, And Associated Kinase Activity Increase Through G1 And S In Cd3-Stimulated Primary Human T Cells., Antanina Zmuidzinas, Harvey J. Mamon, Thomas M. Roberts, Kendall A. Smith

Dartmouth Scholarship

To gain further insight into the role of Raf-1 in normal cell growth, c-raf-1 mRNA expression, Raf-1 protein production, and Raf-1-associated kinase activity in normal human T cells were analyzed. In contrast to the constitutive expression of Raf-1 in continuously proliferating cell lines, c-raf-1 mRNA and Raf-1 protein levels were barely detectable in freshly isolated G0 T lymphocytes. Previous work with fibroblasts has suggested that Raf-1 plays a signaling role in the G0-G1 phase transition. In T cells, triggering via the T-cell antigen receptor (TCR)-CD3 complex (TCR/CD3) resulted in an approximately fourfold increase in c-raf-1 mRNA. In addition, the promotion …

Evidence For Attenuation Of Myo-Inositol Uptake, Phosphoinositide Turnover And Inositol Phosphate Production In Aortic Vasculature Of Rats During Pregnancy, Kirk P. Conrad, Susan A. Barrera, Peter A. Friedman, Vicki M. Schmidt May 1991

Schmidt

Dartmouth Scholarship

We postulated that vascular phosphoinositide metabolism is attenuated during pregnancy, and thereby could contribute to maternal vasodilation and reduced vascular reactivity. The basal rate of incorporation of [3H]myo-inositol and [3H]glycerol into phosphoinositides of aortae from pregnant rats in vitro was significantly reduced, when compared with vessels from virgin animals. After injection of [3H]myo-inositol intravenously into chronically instrumented conscious pregnant and virgin rats, the incorporation of the label by phosphatidylinositol was 66 +/- 4% less in aortae of gravid versus virgin animals (P less than 0.001), despite comparable plasma concentrations of radioactivity. Fold stimulation of total [3H]inositol phosphates by arginine vasopressin, …

Efficient Immortalization Of Luminal Epithelial Cells From Human Mammary Gland By Introduction Of Simian Virus 40 Large Tumor Antigen With A Recombinant Retrovirus, Bartek J, Bartkova J, Kyprianou N, El-Nasir Lalani, Staskova Z, Shearer M, Chang S, Taylor Papadimitriou J May 1991

Efficient Immortalization Of Luminal Epithelial Cells From Human Mammary Gland By Introduction Of Simian Virus 40 Large Tumor Antigen With A Recombinant Retrovirus, Bartek J, Bartkova J, Kyprianou N, El-Nasir Lalani, Staskova Z, Shearer M, Chang S, Taylor Papadimitriou J

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

When defined in terms of markers for normal cell lineages, most invasive breast cancer cells correspond to the phenotype of the common luminal epithelial cell found in the terminal ductal lobular units. Luminal epithelial cells cultured from milk, which have limited proliferative potential, have now been immortalized by introducing the gene encoding simian virus 40 large tumor (T) antigen. Infection with a recombinant retrovirus proved to be 50-100 times more efficient than calcium phosphate transfection, and of the 17 cell lines isolated, only 5 passed through a crisis period as characterized by cessation of growth. When characterized by immunohistochemical staining …

The Relationships Among Competitive Orientation, Sport-Confidence, Self-Efficacy, Anxiety, And Performance, Jeffrey J. Martin, Diane L. Gill Apr 1991

The Relationships Among Competitive Orientation, Sport-Confidence, Self-Efficacy, Anxiety, And Performance, Jeffrey J. Martin, Diane L. Gill

Kinesiology, Health and Sport Studies

We examined the relationships among trait and state psychological variables and performance in male high school distance runners using the Sport Orientation Questionnaire (SOQ; Gill & Deeter, 1988), the Competitive Orientation Inventory (COI; Vealey, 1986), the Trait Sport-Confidence Inventory (TSCI; Vealey, 1986), the State Sport-Confidence Inventory (SSCI; Vealey, 1986), the Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-2 (CSAI-2; Martens, Burton, Vealey, Bump & Smith, 1990), and separate self-efficacy scales for performance (time) and outcome (place). As hypothesized, trait sport-confidence predicted state sport-confidence and outcome self-efficacy. However, competitive orientation did not contribute to the prediction of state measures. State sport-confidence and self-efficacy predicted performance, …

Evaluation Of Four Aerobiological Sampling Methods For The Retrieval Of Aerosolized Pseudomonas Syringae, Mark P. Buttner, Linda Stetzenbach Apr 1991

Evaluation Of Four Aerobiological Sampling Methods For The Retrieval Of Aerosolized Pseudomonas Syringae, Mark P. Buttner, Linda Stetzenbach

Environmental & Global Health Faculty Research

The Andersen six-stage impactor, the SAS (Surface Air System) impactor, the AGI-30 impinger, and gravity plates were evaluated for the retrieval of aerosol-releasedPseudomonas syringae. The upper limits of the impactor samplers were exceeded at a spray concentration of 10^7 CFU/ml, indicating that these samplers are not appropriate for monitoring high airborne concentrations. Decreased cell concentrations were retrieved with increased sampling time for the Andersen and AGI samplers, indicating that a minimum sampling time is preferable for monitoring aerosolized vegetative cells.

Nurse Leaders: The Relationship Between Return To School And Sex Role Traits, Family Demographics And Household Responsibilities, Mary Lynn Anderson

Dissertations

The purposes of this study were: (a) to describe differences , if any, in sex-role traits, age and number of children, proportionate income, and responsibility for household tasks and childcare between female registered nurses who return to college and those who do not; and (b) to extend the research regarding the adult learner's return to college in the specific area of baccalaureate degree completion by registered nurses. Chi square and analysis of variance of survey data, and interviews were used in determining differences between the student and nonstudent groups.

Four hypotheses were tested. The only hypothesis which was supported was …
