A Comparison Of Blood Pressure Readings Taken On Preoperative Patients During Hospital Admission And One And One-Half To Three Hours Later, Susan Lee Woodward

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A "before-after" type experimental study was conducted to find an advantageous time to record baseline blood pressure readings on preoperative patients, which could be referred to following surgery and interpreted as representative of normal for the patients. A review of medical and nursing literature revealed that there is a need to established a blood pressure reading indicative of normal for each patient prior to surgery. Because literature substantiated its acceptance, the ausculatory method of taking indirect arterial blood pressure readings was the technique utilized in this study. Sixty conveniently selected general elective surgical patients, twenty-five to forty-five years of age, …

An Analysis Of Critical Incidents To Determine Effective And Ineffective Clinical Instructions, Nyrabella Fiedler Clague

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

It was the purpose of this survey to determine what constitutes effective and ineffective clinical instruction from the student's viewpoint, and to make the findings available. The descriptive survey method using the critical incident technique was used as the method of research. A critical incident report form was constructed as a tool for gathering the data. There were 117 students of nursing who submitted 166 incidents; 52 per cent were of effective instruction and 48 per cent of ineffective instruction.

A review of pertinent literature revealed that the reactions of students to teachers were important criteria to use as one …

Interpretation Of Activity Orders By Physicians And Nurses, Sharon Jean Staley Jun 1965

Interpretation Of Activity Orders By Physicians And Nurses, Sharon Jean Staley

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to find out the interpretations of activity orders by physicians and nurses in one selected hospital, and to compare the findings of this study to Roose's study to develop a guide for these activity orders. Roose, who surveyed the interpretations of activity orders by physicians and nurses in a group of hospitals, recommended that the same study be replicated in one hospital to find out the discrepancies of interpretation by physicians and nurses in one environment. This study, based on that recommendation, surveyed interpretations by physicians and nurses of four activity orders: (1) complete …

A Comparison Of Axillary And Rectal Temperatures In Children, Doris Payne Jun 1965

A Comparison Of Axillary And Rectal Temperatures In Children, Doris Payne

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This study was conducted on seventy-five children, three to eight years of age. The purpose was to compare a three-minute axillary with a three-minute rectal temperature. Known factors which might influence the findings were eliminated. These were emotional stress, physical exercise, antipyretic medications, cooling and heating measures, gastro-intestinal disturbances, and croupettes or oxygen tents. The range of the difference between the temperatures was from 0.8 degrees to 2.2 degrees with the mean difference of 1.13 degrees. A little less than half of the temperatures had one degree of difference. An additional thirty-two per cent were within 0.2 degrees of being …

Nurse Attendance Versus Use Of Analgesic Medication In The First Stage Of Labor, Jo Ann Soulé Henriksen

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

To determine if the woman who receives the continuous attendance of a nurse during the first stage of labor requires less analgesic medication than the woman who is given interrupted or intermittent nursing care, a study was made employing the experimental method with the parallel-group technique. Thirteen patients meeting the criteria of the study who received continuous nursing attendance during the first stage of labor by the nurse researcher were closely matched to thirteen patients from a group of one hundred seventy-three, whose nursing care was given by the staff personnel. As an objective method of assessing support during labor …

Development Of A Positioning Device For Use In Conjunction With Panoral Radiography, Ray M. Hymer

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A cephalometric positioning device has been developed for use on the XRM Panorex X-Ray machine. Tests have demonstrated that the variability in producing serial radiographs with this device is comparable to, or less than, that currently accepted in conventional radiographic cephalometry.

Two procedures for obtaining serial radiographs were employed. Two patients were used for the first procedure and three patients were used in the second procedure.

In the first procedure each patient was positioned in the device and two radiographs were taken in sequence without disturbing the patient.

In the second procedure three clinic patients were used as subjects and …

The Extent To Which Patients Follow Their Low-Cholesterol Diets, Beverly Jo Peterson Jun 1965

The Extent To Which Patients Follow Their Low-Cholesterol Diets, Beverly Jo Peterson

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This exploratory study was conducted to discover to what extent patients follow their low-cholesterol diets. If they did not, the reasons were investigated. It was hoped that the findings would aid in defining areas of instruction which need greater emphasis when patients receive instruction concerning a low-cholesterol diet.

An interview guide was used as a data gathering tool. The dietitians at one private teaching hospital recorded all dietary prescriptions sent to them during the specified period and ten physicians were contacted for permission to include their patients in the study. The patients were then contacted by telephone and the interviews …

Root Surface Area Related To Anchorage In The Begg Technique, Donald Copeland Freeman Jun 1965

Root Surface Area Related To Anchorage In The Begg Technique, Donald Copeland Freeman

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Almost two hundred years ago Hunter recognized the necessity of extracting teeth to ’’procure room for the others which are to be brought into the arch.” He further noted that, ”To extract an irregular tooth would answer but little purpose if no alteration could be made in the situation of the rest.”1

Extraction of selected teeth to gain room for the proper placement of the rest, and the subsequent procedures to utilize this space to the utmost advantage, have been integral parts of orthodontic treatment for many years.

Strang and Thompson2 stated that the ability to manipulate any …

Factors Related To First Year College Success In A Selected Group Of Scholarship Recipients, Laverl C. Giles May 1965

Factors Related To First Year College Success In A Selected Group Of Scholarship Recipients, Laverl C. Giles

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The idea of a scholarship program is almost as old as the oldest institution of higher learning. The universality of such a program is almost completely comprehensive throughout the world. Although the purpose of scholarship programs has varied as much as each of the institutions varies, in most of the situations the programs have been well acclaimed. The success of these programs in terms of the student has often been tested or at least scrutinized. This type of study has been attempted several times. However, both Harris (11) and Endler (7), in reviewing the literature from 1931 to 1959, report …

On The Mathematical Basis Of Medical Diagnosis, Malcolm E. Turner Jan 1965

On The Mathematical Basis Of Medical Diagnosis, Malcolm E. Turner

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Armed with an overwhelming accumulation of data about disease, how can we ensure that they will all be employed effectively to make a correct diagnosis in a particular patient? The use of electronic computers can be of some help in the collation, correlation, storage, and communication of the accumulated information, but we must be careful in instructing the machinery so we will not one day find a monster whose behavior is unpredictable. A reasonable procedure would be to analyse our own thought processes carefully to ascertain how the human diagnostician arrives at his conclusions. The matter is certainly not settled …

Oxygen Affinities And Electrophoretic Patterns Of Hemoglobins In Trout And Basses From Virginia, Jack D. Burke Jan 1965

Oxygen Affinities And Electrophoretic Patterns Of Hemoglobins In Trout And Basses From Virginia, Jack D. Burke

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Hemoglobin solutions were prepared from pooled samples of blood taken from each of the following species; Salmo gairdneri, the rainbow trout; Salvelinus fontinalis, the brook trout; Salmo trutta, the brown trout; Micropterus dolomieui, the smallmouth bass; Micropterus salmoides, the largemouth bass. Hemoglobin electrophoretic patterns for each species were developed on cellulose acetate membranes. Oxyhemoglobin affinity curves were determined spectrophotometrically on different hemoglobin solutions from each species. Interspecific differences concerned with hemoglobin electrophoretic patterns, oxyhemoglobin affinities, and the Bohr effect were shown for both trout and basses.

The Challenge Of Pulmonary Emphysema, David V. Bates Jan 1965

The Challenge Of Pulmonary Emphysema, David V. Bates

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

I feel very privileged to be invited to be your Stoneburner Lecturer for this year. When I came to consider what I really wanted to say and what might interest people in widely different areas of medicine, there really was little choice. I perhaps can claim to be able to talk about emphysema from a rather broad standpoint than some other physicians. Not because I suffer from it, which is sometimes a good reason for talking about a disease, but because I have been trained both in England and in America, and the outlook on this disease has differed in …
