From Welfare To What?: The Limitations Of Low-Income Work, Lande Ajose Sep 1997

From Welfare To What?: The Limitations Of Low-Income Work, Lande Ajose

New England Journal of Public Policy

The premise of the welfare law enacted by Congress is that people living in poverty could vastly improve their economic status if only they were employed. The author argues that economic security for welfare recipients will not be realized simply by increasing the labor-force attachment. Home health aides comprise an occupation that could absorb many of the large pool of workers expected to join the labor market because demand for their services is high and barriers to entry are low. However, as this survey shows, the home health field offers limited promise to welfare recipients because, significantly for women rolling …

The Role Of Alcohol And Stress On Measures Of Depression And Anxiety Among College Students, Jeffrey F. Porter Aug 1997

The Role Of Alcohol And Stress On Measures Of Depression And Anxiety Among College Students, Jeffrey F. Porter

Masters Theses

In clinical literature regarding the effects of regular alcohol use, psychological benefits of moderate consumption have been suggested (Neff & Husaini, 1982; Neff, 1984; Neff & Husaini, 1985; Neff, 1985; Neff, 1986; Neff, 1993, Lipton, 1994). Despite the diverse groups with which this theory has been examined, no published studies have lookeq specifically at the high-risk group of college undergraduates. Subjects were surveyed to assess their typical drinking behavior, the number of stressful events they had experienced within the past 12 months, their perceived social support, and depressive and anxiety symptoms they experienced within the seven days leading up to …

Estimating Ibnr Reserves With Robust Statistics, Daniel Cheung Jun 1997

Estimating Ibnr Reserves With Robust Statistics, Daniel Cheung

Dissertations

There is often a considerable time lag between an incurred of an accident, such as medical malpractice or product liability, and the time it is reported to the insurance company. These Incurred But Not Reported (IBNR) losses need to be predicted in order to determine the necessary loss reserves. Many actuarial methods have been developed for IBNR reserves estimation. However, none of the methods being used for loss reserving is robust to outliers, nor do they provide adequate statistical inferences to support the actuarial decisions. The rank-based method proposed in this thesis is robust to outliers, and provides statistical inference …

An Investigation Of The Divine Proportion In Varying Facial Types, Gender And Age Groups, Chris A. Coleman Jun 1997

An Investigation Of The Divine Proportion In Varying Facial Types, Gender And Age Groups, Chris A. Coleman

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This retrospective study evaluated the 26 cephalometric measurements which comprise 13 ratios that were purposed by Robert M. Ricketts to be Divine Proportions. The hypothesis that was tested in this study was one that stated that these 13 ratios were not only Divine Proportions, but were constant in all facial types, in both genders and in all stages of growth. In an effort to test this hypothesis, cephalographs were chosen at random from the files of Dr. Ruel Bench, which are currently housed in the Ricketts Research Library at Loma Linda University. Each film tracing was reviewed for accuracy and …

Role Expectation Of Chief Nurse Executive Officers In Integrated Healthcare Systems Located In Highly Managed Care Markets, Daniel L. Gross Dnsc

Dissertations

The healthcare industry is undergoing radical transformation. Healthcare's transformation is characterized by new patterns of organization, alliance, management, administration, and governance. Traditional fee-for-service reimbursement strategies are rapidly dissolving and managed health care is proliferating. Managed care and managed competition are forcing hospitals and healthcare providers to reduce expenses and identify improved methods for healthcare delivery. Integrated healthcare delivery systems (IDSs) and networks are at the center of healthcare reform. Chief Nurse Executive Officers (CNEOs) are increasingly finding themselves in roles within complex IDSs located within highly managed care markets (HMCMs). This new work environment is altering old and mandating new …

D'Agostino, Peter W. F. Wilson, Albert J. Belanger, Daniel H. O'Leary, Philip A. Wolf, David Rush, Ernst J. Schaefer, Irwin H. Rosenberg

United States Public Health Resources

Recent epidemiologic studies suggest that elevated homocysteine concentrations in plasma represent a risk factor for vascular disease and stroke. In the present study, we analyzed plasma samples from the 20th biannual examination of the Framingham Heart Study cohort to determine distribution of plasma homocysteine concentrations, with emphasis on relationships to vitamins that are involved in homocysteine metabolism and prevalence of carotid artery stenosis. Results showed that homocysteine was positively correlated with age. After controlling for age and sex, homocysteine exhibited strong inverse correlation with plasma folate, and weaker correlations with plasma vitamin B12 and pyridoxal- 5' -phosphate. Homocysteine was …

A Characterization Of Early B-Lymphopoiesis: The Differentiation Of Lymphohemopoietic And Early Committed B-Lymphoid Progenitors, Timothy C. Ball Jan 1997

A Characterization Of Early B-Lymphopoiesis: The Differentiation Of Lymphohemopoietic And Early Committed B-Lymphoid Progenitors, Timothy C. Ball

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Studies of B-lymphopoiesis have long been hindered by the lack of assays capable of supporting the differentiation and identification of lymphohemopoietic and early committed B-lymphoid progenitors. The clonal identification of cell-cycle dormant lymphohemopoietic progenitors from mice treated with 5 flurouracil (5-FU) became possible with the development of the two-step assay for lymphohemopoietic progenitors. Studies presented in this dissertation are centered around elucidation of the processes of differentiation of lymphohemopoietic progenitors in an attempt to determine the sequence of events occurring in divergence of the B-lymphoid and myeloid lineages. To address this question a single-step assay capable of supporting the differentiation …

Analysis Of Phosphorescence In Heterogeneous Systems Using Distributions Of Quencher Concentration, A.S. Golub, A.S. Popel, L. Zheng, R.N. Pittman

Physiology and Biophysics Publications and Presentations

ABSTRACT

A continuous distribution approach, instead of the traditional mono- and multiexponential analysis, for determining quencher concentration in a heterogeneous system has been developed. A mathematical model of phosphorescence decay inside a volume with homogeneous concentration of phosphor and heterogeneous concentration of quencher was formulated to obtain pulse-response fitting functions for four different distributions of quencher concentration: rectangular, normal (Gaussian), gamma, and multimodal. The analysis was applied to parameter estimates of a heterogeneous distribution of oxygen tension (P02) within a volume. Simulated phosphorescence decay data were randomly generated for different distributions and heterogeneity of PO2 inside the excitation/emission volume, consisting …

Indicator Bacteria Concentrations Of Two Northwest Arkansas Streams In Relation To Flow And Season, Dwayne R. Edwards, Mark S. Coyne, Tommy C. Daniel, P. F. Vendrell, J. F. Murdoch, P. A. Moore Jr.

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Concentrations of indicator bacteria such as fecal coliform (FC) and fecal streptococcus (FS) are often used to assess the suitability of waters for their intended use(s) and to allocate resources for water quality improvement measures. There is evidence, however, that concentrations of FC and FS can be influenced by variables such as season and flow rate during sampling, which could lead to biased results. The objective of this study was to assess the impacts of season and flow rate on concentrations of FC and FS. Fecal indicator bacteria concentrations were measured for approximately three years at five sites on two …
