Nurses’ Attitudes Towards Hospitalized Older Adults In A Tertiary Care Setting In Ghana, Yakubu H. Yakubu, Abdul-Ganiyu Fuseini, Eleanor Holroyd
School of Nursing & Midwifery, East Africa
Introduction: The increasing population of older adults and rapid increases in co- morbidities globally has necessitated the need for a healthcare delivery system that meets the multifaceted needs of the growing population of older adults. Concurrent with these rising complex health needs is the importance of positive, non-judgmental attitudes of health services providers towards older adults. Moreover, this is particu-larly important in the nursing profession, given nurses' significant and crucial roles in healthcare settings.
Aim: The study aimed to evaluate nurses’ attitudes towards older adults in a tertiary hospital in Ghana.
Design: It employed a descriptive cross-sectional …
Narrative Capacity, James Toomey
Narrative Capacity, James Toomey
Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications
The doctrine of capacity is a fundamental threshold to the protections of private law. The law only recognizes private decision-making—from exercising the right to transfer or bequeath property and entering into a contract to getting married or divorced—made with the level of cognitive functioning that the capacity doctrine demands. When the doctrine goes wrong, it denies individuals, particularly older adults, access to basic private-law rights on the one hand and ratifies decision-making that may tear apart families and tarnish legacies on the other.
The capacity doctrine in private law is built on a fundamental philosophical mismatch. It is grounded in …
Incidence Of Coronary Artery Disease And Testosterone Replacement Therapy, Stephen Leard
Incidence Of Coronary Artery Disease And Testosterone Replacement Therapy, Stephen Leard
Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Papers
In the United States, males see a decrease in testosterone levels around the age of 40, potentially leading to a condition known as hypogonadism. Testosterone administration is the leading treatment for symptomatic hypogonadism. Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) has increased in popularity amongst practicing healthcare providers. This literature review aims to investigate differences in incidence rates of cardiovascular events in males receiving testosterone therapy compared to untreated males with hypogonadism. Given the conflicting evidence regarding the association between exogenous testosterone and cardiovascular risk, published studies and meta-analysis were reviewed to prove this relationship. A comprehensive literature review was performed using electronic …

An Assessment Evaluating The Possible Participation Of A Virtual Nutrition Education Program For Older Adults, Ashlyn Cobble
Undergraduate Honors Theses
The importance of proper nutrition education among older adults is crucial in promoting overall physical health and management of chronic health conditions. However, access to such education has been limited, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. With the current boom in social media popularity, as well as virtual communication portals such as Zoom, the question must be asked if nutrition education could be effectively implemented for the use of older adults through these electronic channels. The study design for this particular research was a cross sectional survey to inform development of an online nutrition education program for older adults in Northeast …
Long-Term Effects Of Estrogen Deficiency On Cardiac Systolic Function And Hypertrophy Following Chronic Sympathetic Stimulation, Pamela Avendano
Long-Term Effects Of Estrogen Deficiency On Cardiac Systolic Function And Hypertrophy Following Chronic Sympathetic Stimulation, Pamela Avendano
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death worldwide. Pre-menopausal women have a lower incidence and severity of CVD compared to age-matched men. However, at the onset of menopause, CVD increases. A central feature in patients with CVD is excessive chronic sympathetic stimulation (CSS) of β-adrenergic receptors (β-AR’s). Clinical and animal studies show estrogen deficiency and age exacerbate cardiac β-AR signaling and contractile function. This led to the hypothesis that prolonged estrogen deficiency followed by CSS worsens left ventricular cardiac function and hypertrophy in the aged female heart. Female mice underwent bilateral ovariectomy or SHAM surgery at 2.5 months …

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Advance care planning (ACP) involves discussions between the patient and their care providers and those close to them about future care. Every patient is entitled to ACP; however, research has shown that providers do not regularly implement them for various reasons. In addition, multiple barriers may be preventing providers from initiating ACP. Among them are lack of knowledge and confidence, apprehension, time, and fear. This Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) addresses the problematic barriers to regular ACP discussions between providers and the patients. Specifically, the purpose of this DNP project is to develop, implement and evaluate an online module to …

The Role Of Map Kinase Phosphatase-5 In Cardiac Adaptations To Endurance Exercise, Jaime Alfredo Perales
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Endurance Exercise is a form of exercise that provides many benefits to the human body. Primarily, the cardiac muscle endures many cardiac adaptations in response to Endurance Exercise. But the mechanisms that are involved within these adaptations remains to be fully understood. MAPK or mitogen-activated protein kinase is a well know signaling pathway that promotes many cardiac benefits such as cell proliferation, protein synthesis and cell differentiation. Although this pathway is activated due to its upstream kinase (MKKs), the research presented focuses on the relationship and mechanisms involved in mitogen kinase phosphatase (MKPs) specifically (MKP-5). The research presented hopes to …

Plasma biomarkers that reflect energy balance disorders in people living with HIV (PLWH) remain limited. Growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF15) abundance in plasma of mice and humans induces negative energy balance but also becomes highly elevated in obesity and other metabolic diseases. We sought to compare plasma GDF15 levels in PLWH and HIV-negative persons and mouse models expressing the HIV accessory protein Vpr (that recapitulate HIV-associated metabolic disorders) and determine their relationship to metabolic parameters. We measured liver Gdf15 mRNA levels and plasma GDF15 levels in male Vpr mice and littermate controls. In parallel, we analyzed plasma GDF15 levels in …

The Effect Of Estrogen On Gdnf Production Of Skeletal Muscle In Vitro, Hope Welter
The Effect Of Estrogen On Gdnf Production Of Skeletal Muscle In Vitro, Hope Welter
Honors Theses
As life expectancy continues to rise, the number of people over age 65 in the U.S. is increasing. An aging population brings with it impacts on the national health system and associated economic expenditures. As individuals age, the skeletomuscular system suffers reduced function due to disease or conditions such as sarcopenia. Sarcopenia is characterized by muscular atrophy resulting from reduced muscle innervation. Exercise has been linked to prevention of sarcopenia, a suspected result of increased production of glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF). GDNF promotes neuronal survival, regeneration, and the formation of neuromuscular junctions. Therefore, treatments like exercise that increase …
Literature Review On Outer Hair Cell Regeneration And Potential Hearing Restoration, Serena Karlov
Literature Review On Outer Hair Cell Regeneration And Potential Hearing Restoration, Serena Karlov
Honors Theses
The cochlea is the portion of the inner ear responsible for hearing, containing both the organ of Corti and auditory hair cells. Sound wave vibrations mechanically bend the stereocilia on the three rows of outer hair cells and one row of inner hair cells. These hair cells transduce this mechanical energy into electrical impulses that are relayed from the auditory nerve to the brain, where sounds are processed. In this review I provide an overview of inner ear anatomy, ear physiology, and auditory transduction. I then move on to specifically focus on the importance of outer hair cells, their regeneration, …

Dancing With Dementia: Using Dance And Movement To Combat The Negative Effects Of Occupational Deprivation In Skilled Nursing Facilities, Mikenzi R. Rivenbark
MOT Student Capstones
As human beings, it is natural to crave interaction with others and to engage within our surrounding environments. Unfortunately, individuals with dementia often lose their ability to independently access and participate within their environment; resulting in occupational deprivation. Occupational deprivation is seen frequently in residents with dementia within a skilled nursing facility (SNF) as they are often left disengaged and seated idle within the facility. Occupational deprivation can lead to psychological and physical illnesses, it can also enhance the progression of dementia, and result in premature death. The use of dance and movement with these residents can provide them the …

BACKGROUND: Older adult women are at risk for negative health outcomes that engaging in sustained physical activity can help prevent. However, promoting long-term maintenance of physical activity in this population has proven to be a challenge. Increasing autonomous motivations (ie, intrinsic, integrated, and identified regulations) for physical activity may facilitate enduring behavior change. Digitally delivered games for health that take a celebratory technology approach, that is, using technology to create new ways to experience valued behaviors and express valued beliefs, may be a useful way to target autonomous motivations for physical activity. Formative research with the target population is needed …
