The Principles Of General Systems Theory Applied To The Medical Model: Who Benefits?, James T. Decker, John R. Redhorse
The Principles Of General Systems Theory Applied To The Medical Model: Who Benefits?, James T. Decker, John R. Redhorse
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The term "Medical Model", though frequently used by professionals, theoreticians and laymen in referring to certain aspects of the medical profession, or of the entire medical system, is rarely used with any degree of precision. The term, indeed, has been used as a shorthand expression, leaving it unnecessary to explicate descriptively the interrelated components of the medical arena. The theories, conceptual constructs, practice, and operating ideologies of the Medical Model, and their association with bi-cultural, economic, political and other concepts are left unspoken. These elements are simply assumed to be implicit in the use of the term. It is our …

Comparisons Of The Habitual Activity Level Of Selected Women To Performance On The Bruce Multistage Treadmill Test And The Cooper 12 Minute Run Test, Teresa Carver Owen
Comparisons Of The Habitual Activity Level Of Selected Women To Performance On The Bruce Multistage Treadmill Test And The Cooper 12 Minute Run Test, Teresa Carver Owen
Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to determine whether the Cooper 12 Minute Run test and Bruce Multistage Treadmill test measure the same type of cardiovascular-endurance performance when testing adult women. A second purpose was to determine whether divergent levels of habitual activity by women are reflected in the scores on each test. Four groups of habitual activity were defined and labeled as follows: non-exercisers, minimal exercisers, adequate exercisers, and more than adequate exercisers. Ten healthy women were selected as subjects in each group. Subjects ranged in age from 22 to 35 years and were within the normal weight range …
An Evaluation Of A Data-Based Sex Education Training Program For Mentally Retarded Adults, Patricia Ann Riley
An Evaluation Of A Data-Based Sex Education Training Program For Mentally Retarded Adults, Patricia Ann Riley
Dissertations and Theses
The study determined that twenty-three mildly to moderately retarded adults living within the community increased their sexual knowledge after attending a twelve month, data-based sex education training program. The Lane Community College-Adult Basic Education (LCC-ABE) Pre/Post Test was administered to each subject when he/she began and finished the training program. The Intermittent Probe Tests were administered to each subject after instruction in each of thirteen topic areas in the curriculum. The main conclusions were that: (a) the subjects significantly increased their sexual knowledge after training; (b) class, sex, ability level, age, type of residence, and length of time in that …

Indications For Cardiac Catheterization In The Diagnosis And Management Of Coronary Artery Disease, George W. Vetrovec
Indications For Cardiac Catheterization In The Diagnosis And Management Of Coronary Artery Disease, George W. Vetrovec
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
In 1979 coronary angiography remains the standard test for diagnosing the presence and extent of coronary artery disease. Non-invasive studies such as exercise testing are only relative predictors of coronary anatomy. Therefore, to define specifically whether or not coronary disease exists in a given patient and, if present, to delineate its location, severity and the potential for bypass surgery, a coronary angiogram is the test to obtain. The purpose of this paper is to discuss indications for coronary angiography in the management of patients with established or suspected coronary disease.
Recent Advances In The Management Of Chronic Airway Obstruction, James A. L. Mathers Jr.
Recent Advances In The Management Of Chronic Airway Obstruction, James A. L. Mathers Jr.
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
Recent advances in our understanding of the natural history of chronic airway obstruction have identified aspects of this process that may enhance the morbidity and mortality of patients with a progressive increase in airway resistance. These advances have helped us to be more specific in the investigation and quantitation of the disease in the pulmonary function laboratory and to be more precise in our therapeutic management. Experience has taught us that the most useful measurement with which to characterize the degree of disease and its rate of progression is the forced expired volume in one second (FEV1). The comprehensive studies …

CsH~2NO2+.C1 -, m.p. 441-449 K (from ethyl acetate), P212~2 l, a = 7.363 (2), b = 21.824 (6), c = 5.790 (2)/~, Z = 4, D x = 1.354, D m = 1.356 Mg m -3 (flotation: CC14-C6H6). The structure was solved by MULTAN. Full-matrix least-squares refinement converged to R = 0.057 for the R configuration and to R = 0.056 for the S configuration (P < 0.05). This is consistent with spontaneous resolution of the title compound, single crystals of which provided optically active aqueous solutions. A partially occupied oxygen site O(1)' is attributed to the oxidation of the alkyl hydroxyl group to a ketone during the data collection. The CI- is hydrogen bonded to H2(N)554, H3(N)555, and 1-t(O2)655 (2.37, 2-19, and 2.10 A). Both O(1) and 0(2) are internally hydrogen bonded [HI(N)...O(1), 2.41 and H(O1)...O(2) = 2.24 A]. Intramolecular hydrogen bonding may account for the unusual pharmacological properties of this compound in which only the N-C(1)-C(2)-O(1) and the O(1)-C(2)- C(3)-C(4) and O(1)-C(2)-C(3)-C(8) torsion angles (-41, -60, +122 ° ) differ significantly from those of other phenylethanolamines.
Diseases Which Mimic Asthma And Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (Copd), George W. Burke Iii
Diseases Which Mimic Asthma And Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (Copd), George W. Burke Iii
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
The American Thoracic Society defines asthma as a disease characterized by increased responsiveness of the trachea and bronchi to various stimuli and manifested by widespread narrowing of the airways that changes in severity either spontaneously or as a result of therapy. In this context asthma is a physiologic diagnosis. It is most often recognized when a patient complains of episodic wheezing and dyspnea and most often confirmed by the demonstration of variable airways obstruction on spirometric testing.
Surgical Treatment Of Mitral Valve Disease, Zubair Ul Hassan
Surgical Treatment Of Mitral Valve Disease, Zubair Ul Hassan
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
This paper discusses the indications for surgery in mitral valve disease by comparing the natural history of the disease, as it can best be determined from the literature, with the results of various surgical procedures. It may be stated at the outset, however, that there are no controlled studies comparing medical and surgical treatment nor are they likely to be carried out in the near future.
Management Of The Difficult Hypertensive Patient, A. Jarrell Raper
Management Of The Difficult Hypertensive Patient, A. Jarrell Raper
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
Hypertension, while usually easily handled, can in certain patients present difficult problems in management. A history of stroke sometimes creates doubt as to the advisability of lowering the blood pressure as this might reduce flow to the brain, causing the patient to have another stroke. It is recognized that severe hypertensives clearly do better if they are treated, but the mild-to-moderate hypertensive patient with a history of stoke is a more difficult problem, and uncertainty about proper management has been so great that a large multicenter clinical trial – randomized, double-blind, and placebo-controlled – of 452 patients was done by …
Pre- And Postoperative Care Of Pulmonary Patients Undergoing Nonthoracic Surgery, R. Paul Fairman
Pre- And Postoperative Care Of Pulmonary Patients Undergoing Nonthoracic Surgery, R. Paul Fairman
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
A variety of pulmonary complications occur in patients during and following nonthoracic surgery. These may include hypoxemia, atelectasis, bronchitis, pneumonia, and respiratory failure. The incidence of these complications is high and remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the postoperative state. Even so, this morbidity may be underestimated since hypoxemia, the most common pulmonary complication, exerts its influence throughout many organ systems through inadequate tissue oxygenation.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation In A Community Hospital, Raymond J. Casciari, Patricia Ferguson
Pulmonary Rehabilitation In A Community Hospital, Raymond J. Casciari, Patricia Ferguson
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
Pulmonary rehabilitation programs seem to have come into vogue along with the national craze for exercise. This paper will discuss the feasibility of a rehabilitation program in a community hospital. In order to do that, we will first address several questions: “Does pulmonary rehabilitation really work?”; “If so, how?”; and “Is it safe?” Having answered these questions, we will discuss some of the details of setting up a rehabilitation program.
Assessment For Surgery For Aortic Valve Replacement, John Quinn
Assessment For Surgery For Aortic Valve Replacement, John Quinn
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
Surgical management of symptomatic aortic valve disease has been successful in improving both survival and function. Data reported from the literature suggest an operative mortality of from 5% to 8%, with a lower risk for elective replacement, and a 65% to 75% five-year survival rate as opposed to 50% to 60% in non-surgical patients with symptomatic aortic valve disease.

Behavioral Pharmacy, C. Anderson Johnson, Albert I. Wertheimer
CGU Faculty Publications and Research
In the text that follows, the development of a coherent and recognizable teaching and research field devoted to the development of the behavioral and social sciences in pharmacy is proposed. It is important for teachers and researchers in this field to establish a common and recognizable identity; to share basic definitions, purposes and criteria; and to develop forums (such as scientific meetings ·and perhaps a journal) for the exchange and nourishment of the behavioral science knowledge that they generate. It is suggested that this field be called behavioral pharmacy. This title is suggested primarily because Of recent· participant agreement and …
