Congenital Anomalies Of The Heart, C. W.M. Poynter Jan 1919

Congenital Anomalies Of The Heart, C. W.M. Poynter

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

For a number of years I have been studying the abnormalities of the circulatory system resulting from developmental disturbances. One paper relating to the aortic arches has already appeared, Poynter (1916), and in this one I shall confine myself to the anomalies of the heart. There are few subjects which have attracted more attention among the medical profession than the irregularities in the developmen~ of the heart and great vessels, but in the case of the heart the interest is not so much from the teratological side as in the case of the arteries; its developmental defects are frequently of …

Notes have been made of these abnormalities and the literature describing similar conditions has been gradually collected. The more recent textbooks in anatomy devote little space to the subject of arterial variations and the classic works which have reviewed the field are no longer readily consulted; then, too, new facts have been added to our knowledge of arterial development since the most recent of the latter were published. In view of these facts it has seemed worth while to …

Summary Of Two Years' Study Of Insects In Relation To Pellagra, Allan H. Jennings Sep 1914

Summary Of Two Years' Study Of Insects In Relation To Pellagra, Allan H. Jennings

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials

Excerpt:

With the growing interest in pellagra, following the authoritative recognition of its presence in the United States in 1907, the study of its etiology was taken up by various investigators and the several theories of causation were subjected to close scrutiny.

Prominent among these theories was that of insect transmission, first advanced by Sambon, who limited this function to the species of blood-sucking gnats comprising the genus Simulium.

The importance of the disease and the possibility of such a factor in its causation, led the Bureau of Entomology, late in 1911, to undertake an investigation of the subject …
