Ear Lateralization For Time Compressed Rhymed Word Sequences: Primacy And Recency Effects, Janet Lee Patterson
Ear Lateralization For Time Compressed Rhymed Word Sequences: Primacy And Recency Effects, Janet Lee Patterson
Speech and Hearing Sciences ETDs
Primacy and recency effects for lateralized time compressed rhyme sequences were investigated. Subjects were forty normal hearing, right handed, young adult listeners. Stimuli were 0% and 60% time compressed five word rhyme sequences presented with no masking and contralateral multitalker masking. Item errors and order errors were counted for each position in the rhyme word sequences. A series of analyses of variance were computed for paired differences of positions in the sequences for each ear and error type to assess differential primacy and recency effects.

Percutaneous Transfemoral Renal Artery Occlusion In The Management Of Advanced Renal Carcinoma, Douglas E. Johnson
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
This report describes renal artery occlusion as a therapeutic alternative to nephrectomy and chemotherapy in treating patients with metastatic renal carcinoma. Using a combination of Gelfoam and the Gianturco stainless steel coil, embolization was performed on 75 patients at the University of Texas System Cancer Center, M.D. Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute with promising results. Its use is recommended 1) to facilitate surgical removal of large and difficult tumors, 2) to control local symptoms (pain, bleeding, etc), and 3) as part of a planned therapeutic program consisting of infarction, nephrectomy and progestins for patients with minimal to moderate metastatic disease.

The Acquisition Of Five Specific Morphemes By English-Speaking Preschool Children, Maxine Ulyate
The Acquisition Of Five Specific Morphemes By English-Speaking Preschool Children, Maxine Ulyate
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of the present research was to study the acquisition of the morphemes involved in the production of the noun plural and possessive, the present progressive tense, the third person singular of the verb and the regular past tense. Research had documented that a time lapse existed between the time that a child was able to correctly inflect a common English word and when he could correctly inflect a phonetically similar nonsense item. This lapse appeared to be the time during which the child formulated an internal rule for the production of each morpheme.
The methodology involved testing sixty …

Diagnostic Comparison Between Free Speech Samples And Imitation Tasks, Tina Valcarenghi
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This study investigated and compared the advantages and disadvantages of a free speech sample and imitation type task in analyzing language performance in kindergarten children. An analysis of the language performance of 15 children was completed. Their language ranged in severity from normal to severely delayed. The children were divided into three distinct subgroups; severely delayed, moderately delayed and normal. The subject's scores were analyzed to determine if there was a significant difference in the reliability of these two measures and in the sensitivity in identifying presence and severity of disorder.

The Effect Of Primary Nursing On Nurse Job Satisfaction And Patient Satisfaction With Nursing Care, Karen Garrison
The Effect Of Primary Nursing On Nurse Job Satisfaction And Patient Satisfaction With Nursing Care, Karen Garrison
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Nursing as a profession has seen the loss of large numbers of practitioners through job dissatisfaction. In addition, recent studies testing professional growth among new graduates have demonstrated negative findings. Lack of responsibility and accountability have been indicated as potential causes of these problems which confront professional nursing.
In nursing modalities such as functional, case method and team nursing the lack of autonomy in providing care is visible. The team nursing approach fragments patient care; a nurse in this system is responsible for team members rather than directly for patients. The registered nurse does not have enough personal contact in …

The Clinical Application And Practical Limitations Of Bone Conducted Speech, Terry Scott Cochrane
Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of increased intensity on the bone conducted speech discrimination ability of normal listeners utilizing standard audiological equipment. The NU-6 word lists were utilized to test the bone conducted speech discrimination skills of ten normal hearing subjects, 21 to 30 years of age, on standard clinical equipment. Both the hearing levels (dB HL) and the sensation levels (dB SL) of the test administration were considered. In general, it was recommended that 100 dB Hl is the most appropriate dial setting for the administration of bone conducted speech discrimination tests even though …

A Comparison Of Maternal Remarks To Normal And Language Delayed Children, Vanessa Jow Bunker
Dissertations and Theses
This investigation compared maternal remarks to language delayed offspring and maternal remarks to normal language developing offspring in an attempt to determine if and where differences occurred. The following questions were asked:
1) Do mothers of language delayed children present their children with a significantly different percentage of verbal constraints (commands and question) than do mothers of normal language developing children in a play situation?
2) Do mothers of language delayed children present their children with an equal number of utterances as mothers of normal language developing children in a play situation?
3) Is the maternal mean length of response …
The Effects Of Morning And Afternoon Scheduling On The Clinical Performance Of Severe Aphasic Adults, Judith Ann Fisher
The Effects Of Morning And Afternoon Scheduling On The Clinical Performance Of Severe Aphasic Adults, Judith Ann Fisher
Dissertations and Theses
Concern regarding variables which influence the performance of aphasic adults has been demonstrated in the literature. Marshall et al. (1978) found that one such variable, scheduling of intervention, influenced significantly the test performance of their subjects. They determined that the aphasic subjects performed better in the morning than in the afternoon. The purpose of the present study was to determine if performance of severe aphasic adults on easy and difficult, single-word picture-identification tasks, presented in a clinically reinforcing manner, is differentially affected by morning and afternoon scheduling.
The questions posed in this investigation were: 1) Does morning versus afternoon scheduling …
Androgen-Induced Immunosuppression, Debra Ann Weyant
Androgen-Induced Immunosuppression, Debra Ann Weyant
Dissertations and Theses
It is well established that females are more immunocompetent than males as evidenced by higher humoral antibody titers, lowered susceptibility to infection, and more efficient graft rejection.
Furthermore, females also exhibit a much higher incidence of autoimmune disease. These observations have led investigators to believe that the male hormonal environment may play a key role in the regulation of immune response. For this reason, this study is concerned with the expression of autoimmunity and of immune function in the mouse.
This study included the New Zealand Black (NZB) mouse strain, as an animal model for human SLE, as well as …
An Investigation Of The Consistency Of Stimulus Overselection Of Autistic Children, Patricia O'Meara Walker
An Investigation Of The Consistency Of Stimulus Overselection Of Autistic Children, Patricia O'Meara Walker
Dissertations and Theses
A review of the literature indicated that not all of the research in the area of overselectivity of autistic children has been in agreement. It does seem evident that some autistic children overselect. This could be the result of an attentional factor or a modality preference. This has important implications for the education of autistic children. In the light of the inconsistency of autistic children's reactions to sensory stimuli this investigator believed there was a need to determine if overselection is consistent before referring to the overselected modality as a preferred modality or comparing overselected modalities with the child's mode …

The use of so many different therapeutic approaches to stuttering raises frequent questions about methodology and treatment. Confidence in a methodology and treatment approach depends upon follow-up research conducted with systemic analysis of the individuals prior to treatment and following treatment.
The purpose of this study was to conduct a follow-up evaluation on R.L. Casteel's Four Stage Stuttering Program at Portland State University and to examine the degree of maintained fluency in relation to entering baseline, time in program, and exit stage.

This study was designed to investigate the relationship, in a counseling session, of an initial guided meditation by a counselor to presence, a core condition of counseling and psychotherapy as defined in psychosynthesis. Presence consists of two variables--the quality of the therapeutic relationship and the ability of the counselor or therapist to disidentify from his or her personality and become identified as a 11 Self. 11 The quality of the therapeutic relationship was measured by the Barrett-Lennard Relationship Inventory. Counselor disidentification-"Self"identification was assessed by the number of distracting thoughts, feelings, and body sensations experienced by the counselor during the counseling …

A Design For Organizational Structure: Ambulatory Care Services In The Department Of Health And Hospitals, City Of St. Louis, Edward M. Peters
Theses
This paper by Edward M. Peters explores the organizational design of ambulatory care services within the Department of Health and Hospitals in St. Louis, driven by a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Municipal Health Services Program. It begins by detailing the current challenges within St. Louis’s health department structure, emphasizing the need for integrated, neighborhood-based healthcare services to serve underserved communities.
Peters examines three organizational models: maintaining the current structure, adopting a hospital-based approach, or establishing a dedicated ambulatory care division. The analysis emphasizes the limitations of the current health center model, which relies heavily on categorical programs …
