A Histopathological Assessment Of The Effects Of Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetes On The Ears Of Chinese Hamsters, Karen Ailsworth Dec 1983

A Histopathological Assessment Of The Effects Of Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetes On The Ears Of Chinese Hamsters, Karen Ailsworth

Masters Theses

Research has produced evidence associating progressive, bilateral, sensorineural hearing loss with diabetes mellitus in human and animal subjects. The microangiopathy which is presumably the cause of hearing loss appears similar to the microangiopathy leading to retinal and renal atrophy.

In the present study the temporal bones of six streptozotocininduced diabetic Chinese hamsters and six nondiabetic Chinese hamsters were histologically processed. Sections stained with hematoxylin and eosin were assessed for total auditory and vestibular otopathology and revealed no statistically significant differences between the two groups. Sections stained with periodic acid-Schiff's were evaluated for vascular basement membrane changes and revealed no statistically …

A Study Of The Validity Of The Global Assessment Scale, Daniel J. Dekker Dec 1983

A Study Of The Validity Of The Global Assessment Scale, Daniel J. Dekker

Dissertations

The study evaluated the concurrent validity of the Global Assessment Scale (GAS), a rating scale which is used to measure overall severity of psychiatric disturbance in program evaluation systems and in research studies. Validity was evaluated by comparing GAS ratings of 60 community mental health outpatients to scores on the MMPI.

The literature review indicated that the GAS has been used in over 90 studies. Thirty-one inter-rater reliability coefficients cited indicated an acceptable median reliability of .80, but studies relevant to the GAS's validity were sparse and marginally supportive. The GAS was utilized primarily to evaluate change due to psychotherapy …

The Politics Of Mental Health After Care, Steve Rose Nov 1983

The Politics Of Mental Health After Care, Steve Rose

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Essential to the development of a positive practice in mental health after-care is a precise formulation of clients' needs. Clarity about a statement of needs provides added information about anticipated obstacles to meeting those needs, both at the client and systemic levels. To accomplish this preliminary task, it becomes necessary to create what we refer to as a "problem definitional" level of theory. Problem defining theory mediates between more global theory, which establishes a larger context for understanding the broad policy issues and direct implications,* and the articulation of practice theory.

Identification Of Four Complementary Rna Species In Akabane Virus-Infected Cells, Asit K. Pattnaik, G. Abraham Sep 1983

Identification Of Four Complementary Rna Species In Akabane Virus-Infected Cells, Asit K. Pattnaik, G. Abraham

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

The analysis of RNA extracted from purified Akabane virus demonstrated the presence of three size classes of single-stranded RNAs with sedimentation coefficients of 31S (large, L), 26S (medium, M), and 13S (small, S). Molecular weights of these RNA species were estimated to be 2.15 x 106,1.5 X 106, and 0.48 x 106 for the L, M, and S RNAs, respectively. Hybridization analysis involving viral genomic RNA and RNA from virus-infected cells resulted in the identification of four virus-specific cRNA species in infected cells. These cRNAs were found to be nonpolyadenylated by their inability to bind …

The Effects Of Cerebrovascular Surgery On Behavior: What Has Been Demonstrated?, Laurence M. Binder Sep 1983

The Effects Of Cerebrovascular Surgery On Behavior: What Has Been Demonstrated?, Laurence M. Binder

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

We studied the effect of the superficial temporal artery to middle cerebral artery bypass (STA-MCA) procedure on neuropsychological function. Nineteen patients with cerebrovascular disease of the anterior carotid circulation (12 on surgical and seven on medical therapy) received an extensive battery of neuropsychological tests; the average test-retest interval was eight weeks. Both groups improved on some measures, and no patients deteriorated. There was no evidence of greater improvement by the surgical group. The results are compatible with a spontaneous remission/practice effect interpretation. A review of the carotid endarterectomy and STA-MCA bypass literature suggests that the null hypothesis of no effect …

The Effects Of A Sexual Teaching Program With Post-Myocardial Infarction Clients, Delores Williams Aug 1983

The Effects Of A Sexual Teaching Program With Post-Myocardial Infarction Clients, Delores Williams

MSN Research Projects

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of a structured teaching program on knowledge and behavior regarding the resuming of sexual activity post-myocardial infarction. The effects of the teaching program were mea sured by the "Cardiac Sexual Knowledge and Behavior Inven tory" posttest. This test was administered to the control group prior to attending the planned teaching program. The experimental group attended individualized teaching sessions during the hospitalization period. Subjects in the experi mental group were posttested two to four weeks after their hospital discharge. The cardiac clients and their spouses received three two-hour teaching sessions on …

Medical Oncologists' Self-Reported Practices And Opinions Regarding Cancer Chemotherapy Informed Consent Procedures, George Walter Rakowsky Aug 1983

Medical Oncologists' Self-Reported Practices And Opinions Regarding Cancer Chemotherapy Informed Consent Procedures, George Walter Rakowsky

Masters Theses

This study gathered descriptive data on the parameters of informed consent with cancer chemotherapy patients from the medical oncologists' point of view. A review of the literature suggested that no such research has previously been attempted. A description of disclosure practices would clarify current procedures and would also serve as a guide for further research in the area.

Six hundred questionnaires were mailed to medical oncologists, and thirty percent of these were returned. Data were analyzed primarily using descriptive statistics. Additionally, relationships between demographic variables and different disclosure practices were investigated.

Significant relationships were observed between variables reflecting the size …
