Assessing Khumbu Region Glaciers Mass Balance Change Using Geospatial Techniques From 2012 To 2024, Yashvi Jagatbhai Shah

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

The glaciers in the Hindu Kush Himalaya are critical for sustaining the water supply of South Asia's major rivers, upon which over 230 million people, both in the mountainous regions and lowland areas, depend. Climate change is driving rapid glaciers melt near the summit of Mount Everest, located at an elevation of approximately 7,906 meters (25,938 feet). This has resulted in glacier thinning occurring up to 80 times faster than the original ice formation. However, due to their disposition in a complex topographic setting and inaccessible terrain, continuous glacier observations pose significant challenges.

This study evaluated the mass balance of …

Fpga-Based Sensors For Distributed Digital Manufacturing Systems: A State-Of-The-Art Review, Laraib Khan, Sriram Praneeth Isanaka, Frank Liou

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The combination of distributed digital factories (D2Fs) with sustainable practices has been proposed as a revolutionary technique in modern manufacturing. This review paper explores the convergence of D2F with innovative sensor technology, concentrating on the role of Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) in promoting this paradigm. A D2F is defined as an integrated framework where digital twins (DTs), sensors, laser additive manufacturing (laser-AM), and subtractive manufacturing (SM) work in synchronization. Here, DTs serve as a virtual replica of physical machines, allowing accurate monitoring and control of a given manufacturing process. These DTs are supplemented by sensors, providing near-real-time data to …

Artificial Intelligence And Cracks In The Foundation Of Intellectual Property, Robin C. Feldman Dec 2024

Artificial Intelligence And Cracks In The Foundation Of Intellectual Property, Robin C. Feldman

Faculty Scholarship

Our implicit image of progress and the standards we use to calibrate human contribution to progress are quietly at risk from the onslaught of artificial intelligence (AI). AI has the potential to significantly shrink the pool of creative work that is protectable by intellectual property (IP) law and the range of information that is protectable, as well as shrinking the value proposition of IP regimes themselves.

As society faces this changing landscape, we must tread carefully to distinguish fears about AI from the task of defining the boundaries of intellectual property, whose theoretic concepts aren’t designed to bear such weighty …

Jamming Precoding In Af Relay-Aided Plc Systems With Multiple Eavessdroppers, Zhengmin Kong, Jiaxing Cui, Li Ding, Tao Huang, Shihao Yan

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Enhancing information security has become increasingly significant in the digital age. This paper investigates the concept of physical layer security (PLS) within a relay-aided power line communication (PLC) system operating over a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel based on MK model. Specifically, we examine the transmission of confidential signals between a source and a distant destination while accounting for the presence of multiple eavesdroppers, both colluding and non-colluding. We propose a two-phase jamming scheme that leverages a full-duplex (FD) amplify-and-forward (AF) relay to address this challenge. Our primary objective is to maximize the secrecy rate, which necessitates the optimization of the …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

High-grade serous ovarian carcinoma (HGSOC) is genetically unstable and characterised by the presence of subclones with distinct genotypes. Intratumoural heterogeneity is linked to recurrence, chemotherapy resistance, and poor prognosis. Here, we use spatial transcriptomics to identify HGSOC subclones and study their association with infiltrating cell populations. Visium spatial transcriptomics reveals multiple tumour subclones with different copy number alterations present within individual tumour sections. These subclones differentially express various ligands and receptors and are predicted to differentially associate with different stromal and immune cell populations. In one sample, CosMx single molecule imaging reveals subclones differentially associating with immune cell populations, fibroblasts, …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Studies suggest links between diabetes and gastrointestinal (GI) traits; however, their underlying biological mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we comprehensively assess the genetic relationship between type 2 diabetes (T2D) and GI disorders. Our study demonstrates a significant positive global genetic correlation of T2D with peptic ulcer disease (PUD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), gastritis-duodenitis, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and diverticular disease, but not inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). We identify several positive local genetic correlations (negative for T2D – IBD) contributing to T2D’s relationship with GI disorders. Univariable and multivariable Mendelian randomisation analyses suggest causal effects of T2D on PUD and gastritis-duodenitis and …

More Than Semantics? Navigating The "Policy ∗ Design" Concepts' Landscape, Diana Pamela Villa-Alvarez, Adam Wellstead

Michigan Tech Publications

Scholarship from the design discipline and policy sciences has produced rich empirical and theoretical knowledge on the intersection of policy and design. However, using concepts that pair “policy” and “design” in various ways, often with different meanings, can confuse practitioners and scholars alike. This confusion is further exacerbated by the sheer variety of online information, including peer-reviewed articles, books, reports, blogs, courses, and the websites of prominent scholars, practitioners, and policy actors. To address this, we analyze “Policy * Design” concepts from a Google Search Engine scraping tool and, in doing so, identify four distinct approaches: “policy design,” “design for …

An Exploration Of Refugee Policy Using Social Construction Theory & The Narrative Policy Framework, Daniel S. Amoruso Dec 2024

An Exploration Of Refugee Policy Using Social Construction Theory & The Narrative Policy Framework, Daniel S. Amoruso

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Social Construction Theory and Narrative Policy Framework are cohesive products to assess policymaking by examining social construction variables and the formation of narratives. Although I use each independently and together, using them in conjunction helps to ascertain the difference between what someone does and says. Often, there is a substantive disconnect between the two. As with many policy arenas, interest in refugee policy has ebbed and flowed over the past ten years as the United States fluctuates from Democrat to Republican and back to Democrat administrations. Various administrations, media outlets, and separate communities often portray refugees differently; some favorably toward …

Where And How Are Undergraduate Students Developing Dispositions Needed For The Geoscience Workforce?, Kaelyn Lagerwall

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Dispositions, such as the desire to learn, work ethic, initiative, and organization, are defined as internal attributes, attitudes, or values that stimulate action. Rather than being intrinsic traits, dispositions can be learned and are considered a dynamic and evolving arrangement of interconnected components. Dispositions are highly desired and valuable to the workforce, playing a critical role in gaining and maintaining employment; they are frequently mentioned in job advertisements for bachelor-level geoscientists. Therefore, it is important to understand where and how geoscience students are developing these dispositions as part of their degree programs. We surveyed faculty in geoscience departments at two …

Constructing A Blueprint For A Professional Development Module On Interventions For Bullying And Self-Advocacy For Nursing Faculty, Glenn Murphy

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Bullying remains a persistent issue among nursing faculty. Nursing faculty often claim they do not have the communication skills or the confidence to address bullying behaviors and to advocate for themselves. Instead, they often avoid the perpetrators or accept bullying as part of the nursing education environment. One possible solution involves creating a professional development module for nursing faculty. My Delphi study led to the creation of a blueprint for a professional development module on interventions for bullying and self-advocacy for nursing faculty. Over the three rounds of online questionnaires, an expert panel of nursing faculty suggested content areas, recommended …

Is International Law Progressive, Cormac Macamhlaigh Dec 2024

Is International Law Progressive, Cormac Macamhlaigh

Buffalo Law Review

The rise of authoritarian populism in recent years has raised the question of whether international law can be coopted for authoritarian purposes. Tom Ginsburg has recently argued for the rise of what he calls “authoritarian international law” which, he claims, is undermining the hitherto progressive ethos of international law since the foundation of the United Nations. This paper critically examines this category of authoritarian international law. Adopting a Dworkinian interpretive methodology to the question of the normativity of international law, it argues that a putative authoritarian international law is incompatible with the normativity of international law as currently understood. This …

Equivalence Of Eval-Readback And Eval-Apply Big-Step Evaluators By Structuring The Lambda-Calculus's Strategy Space, Pablo Nogueira Iglesias, Álavaro García-Pérez Dec 2024

Equivalence Of Eval-Readback And Eval-Apply Big-Step Evaluators By Structuring The Lambda-Calculus's Strategy Space, Pablo Nogueira Iglesias, Álavaro García-Pérez

Artículos científicos

We study the equivalence between eval-readback and eval-apply big-step evaluators in the general setting of the pure lambda calculus. We study ‘one-step’ equivalence (same strategy) and also discuss ‘big-step’ equivalence (same final result). One-step equivalence extends for free to evaluators in other settings (calculi, programming languages, proof assistants, etc.) by restricting the terms (closed, convergent) while maintaining the strategy. We present a proof that one-step equivalence holds when the ‘readback’ stage satisfies straightforward well-formedness provisos, the ‘eval’ stage implements a ‘uniform’ strategy, and the eval-apply evaluator implements a ‘balanced hybrid’ strategy that has ‘eval’ as a subsidiary strategy. The proof …
