John Paul Scott Oral History, John Paul Scott Aug 1986

John Paul Scott Oral History, John Paul Scott

Oral History Collection

Susan Mehrtens' Note:

Dr. J.P. Scott was the head of animal behavioral research at Hamilton Station. He carne to our meeting with a thoughtful outline, and spoke to it for most of our interview. His tape, as a result, is mostly a monologue. This tape is extremely valuable because Jax threw away all the records of Hamilton Station, so only the accounts of Scott, Fuller and Fox (in this project) can provide a record of this aspect of the Lab's past. Scott indicates how pervasive was the network in which his work was conducted, and how many noteworthy figures or …

Effects Of Seating Arrangement On Affective Meanings And Group Interaction In Healthy Senior Citizens, Judith Ann Boughton Aug 1986

Effects Of Seating Arrangement On Affective Meanings And Group Interaction In Healthy Senior Citizens, Judith Ann Boughton

Masters Theses

Occupational therapists state that environmental factors (seating arrangements) influence behavior. This ex post facto study examined the effect of peripheral versus central seating arrangement on interaction (verbalizing and looking), affect, and group climate in 41 healthy senior citizens. Nine men and 32 women aged 62 to 83 participated in two collage activities (creative and imitative) in either a parallel/nonsharing group or a project/ sharing group. Seating arrangement was added to an earlier study's independent variables (creative and imitative activities, and sharing and nonsharing groups). Dependent variables consisted of three factors of affective meaning from the Osgood Semantic Differential, evaluation, power, …

Caring Choices: Decision-Making About Treatment For Catastrophically Ill Newborns, Betty Wolder Levin Jan 1986

Caring Choices: Decision-Making About Treatment For Catastrophically Ill Newborns, Betty Wolder Levin

Publications and Research

Decision making for catastrophically ill newborns has recently emerged as a social issue. Advances in biomedical technology and practice, and changes in other economic, social and political factors have led to controversy about norms to guide treatment choice. While much has been written on how such decisions should be made, there has been little social science research on how such decisions are actually made.

The purpose of this dissertation is to elucidate the way that clinicians think about treatment decisions for catastrophically ill newborns. The focus is on decision making with respect to the limitation of treatment in those situations …

Ua37/13 Plants Used By The Prehistoric Indians Of Kentucky, Chuck Crume Nov 1985

Ua37/13 Plants Used By The Prehistoric Indians Of Kentucky, Chuck Crume

Faculty/Staff Personal Papers

No one knows exactly when the Indians first entered the area we now call Kentucky, but there is an approximation. Archeologists have found evidence of Clovis camps and living sites in the state (9,000 to 12,000 B.P.), This would have been during the Paleo Stage, toward the end of the last ice age. The climate of the area would have been much cooler then. The selection of plants and animals would also have been different than those found in modern times.

Paleo Indians used plants for food, utility and medical uses. It seems that plant use during this period is …

Recovery Of Helminths From Prehistoric Feces: The Cultural Ecology Of Ancient Parasitism, Karl J. Reinhard Aug 1985

Recovery Of Helminths From Prehistoric Feces: The Cultural Ecology Of Ancient Parasitism, Karl J. Reinhard

Karl Reinhard Publications

Several helminth parasites have been recovered from archaeological sites on the Colorado Plateau. These include Ascaris, Trichuris, Enterobius, Moniliformis, and tapeworms in the families Hymenolepidae and Taeniidae. The recovery of these animals demonstrates that cross-temporal: comparison of parasitism between different prehistoric lifestyles is possible. Such comparison might elucidate the effects of changing lifestyle and subsistance pattern on human parasitism.

Desiccated feces recovered from archaelogical deposits were studied. Hunter-gatherer feces were selected from Dust Devil Cave in southeastern Utah. Agriculturalist feces were studied from Antelope House, a cave site in northeastern Arizona, and Salmon Ruins, a Pueblo …

Rationality, Culture, And The Construction Of “Ethical Discourse”: A Comparative Perspective , Carolyn P. Edwards Jan 1985

Rationality, Culture, And The Construction Of “Ethical Discourse”: A Comparative Perspective , Carolyn P. Edwards

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The problem of ethical relativism has never been resolved or laid to rest. It turns out to be a complicated set of problems, involving many philosophical issues of meaning (Brandt 1954; Ladd 1957). For example, how should we define morality and ethics? How should we define the problem of ethical relativism? How does the problem of ethical relativism relate to the problem of cultural relativism?

One question that is part of this package is a scientific one and concerns whether there are even aspects of moral values and ethical discourse that can be validly abstracted from their cultural context and …

Comparison Of Haitian Children In A Nutrition Intervention Programme With Children In The Haitian National Nutrition Survey, G. G. Berggren, James R. Hébert, C. M. Waternaux

Faculty Publications

Weight-for-height and height-for-age data were compared for preschool-age Haitian children enrolled in a community health and nutrition intervention programme and children measured in the Haiti national nutrition survey of 1978. Cross-sections of the longitudinal data of the intervention programme corresponding to the season when the national survey was conducted (May to September) were chosen for the three years of available programme data (1969, 1970, 1971). Significantly less stunting was found in children in the 1970 and 1971 intervention group than in the children covered by the national survey. Tests of trend also showed that the height (or length) status of …

Parenting Skills Of Primiparas As Correlated To Maternal Age, Kristine Grow Johnson Dec 1984

Parenting Skills Of Primiparas As Correlated To Maternal Age, Kristine Grow Johnson

MSN Research Projects

A descriptive study was designed to examine parenting skills of primiparas and determine if parenting skills correlated with maternal age. The researcher hypothesized that there would be no significant difference between maternal age and scores as determined by the Parenting Skills Questionnaire and the Observation of Parenting Skills. Primiparas, ranging in age from eighteen to thirty-three, comprised three samples : ten in the eighteen to twenty-three age group, ten in the twenty-four to twenty-nine age group, and three in the thirty to thirty-five age group. Parenting knowledge and skills were assessed of subjects with infants three to seven days old. …

Genetics And Epidemiology Of Gallbladder Disease In New World Native Peoples, K M Weiss, R E Ferrell, C L Hanis, P N Styne Nov 1984

Genetics And Epidemiology Of Gallbladder Disease In New World Native Peoples, K M Weiss, R E Ferrell, C L Hanis, P N Styne

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Native peoples of the New World, including Amerindians and admixed Latin Americans such as Mexican-Americans, are highly susceptible to diseases of the gallbladder. These include cholesterol cholelithiasis (gallstones) and its complications, as well as cancer of the gallbladder. Although there is clearly some necessary dietary or other environmental risk factor involved, the pattern of disease prevalence is geographically associated with the distribution of genes of aboriginal Amerindian origin, and levels of risk generally correspond to the degree of Amerindian admixture. This pattern differs from that generally associated with Westernization, which suggests a gene-environment interaction, and that within an admixed population …
