THE weather had been remarkably pleasant, with an odd shower of rain followed by several warm days.
Just the weather for blowfly troubles, so the owner decided it was time he crutched his breeding flock of 500 ewes.
But as the mob approached the yards trouble was coming
A Guide To Good Lamb Marking, H E. Fels
A Guide To Good Lamb Marking, H E. Fels
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
LAMB marking is the most severe of the various ordeals that sheep are called upon to endure.
It is a series of surgical operations, each involving a risk of infection, and some involving risks of severe haemorrhage.
Growth rate is reduced to the same extent by rubber rings as by the knife.

Oral feeding of stilbestrol or implanting with stilbestrol or Synovex has resulted in increased weight gain and efficiency of gain for cattle fed finishing rations.
Combining oral feeding or stilbestrol with implanting did not give increased performance above that obtained from oral stilbestrol alone in two tests. Implanting cattle fed oral stilbestrol at the start of the feeding program with either stilbestrol or Synovex gave a similar pattern of performance to that obtained from oral stilbestrol alone.

We, as seniors, are now rapidly approaching graduation and are beginning to plan our future lives and endeavors after receiving our degrees. Several are planning to continue their education in pharmacy or related fields, but the majority will enter the profession at the retail level. In whatever direction we decide to embark, let us hope we can remember the many things which our professors have tried to teach us. Probably the most important ideal set forth by the faculty is the ethical standards we all must follow, for without ethics we cannot truly call pharmacy a profession. It is up …

Hydatid Disease In Western Australia, K J. Austen
Hydatid Disease In Western Australia, K J. Austen
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
BECAUSE hydatid disease is a disease of humans as well as animals every consideration must be given to its control and to the prevention of any possible increase in incidence.
The incidence of hydatids in Western Australia has not, in the past, been very high.
However, the great increase in sheep numbers which has taken place in recent years and which is expected to continue for many years to come, will produce a situation where it could be expected that the incidence of the disease will rise unless stock owners, particularly sheep owners, take appropriate steps to control the tapeworms …

A Measure Of Clover Infertility In Ewes, N Davenport
A Measure Of Clover Infertility In Ewes, N Davenport
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
SERIOUS impairment of the breeding ability of ewes grazed for prolonged periods on growing pastures containing dominant subterranean clover has been experienced in Western Australia for many years.
The first widespread recognition of the problem coincided with the upsurge of improved pasture establishment based on the Dwalganup variety of subterranean clover in the higher rainfall sections of the wheatbelt and adjacent sheep raising areas to the west and south.

Choking Of Milking Machine Pulsators, G R. Olney
Choking Of Milking Machine Pulsators, G R. Olney
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
THE value of applying the teat cup squeezing action more slowly, by "choking", has been well demonstrated for a number of years.
Leslie and Whittlestone (1938) suggested that brutal teat cups and snappy pulsators could be undesirable because of the trauma caused.
Choking was recommended by them to overcome this.

Worms In Sheep. 3. Control Of Worms By Drenching, R W. Butler
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
DRENCHING for worm control must be carefully timed in relation to the effect of climatic conditions on the development and survival of worm larvae on the pastures, and the seasonal variation in worm burdens carried by sheep.

Danger : Watch Out For Foot-And-Mouth Disease, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
This article was prepared by officers of the Department of Agriculture's Animal Division, with the approval of the Chief Quarantine Officer (Animals) for Western Australia.
THE introduction of foot-and-mouth disease into Australia would be an event of national importance.
Its economic consequences could be far-reaching and grave.

Studies On The Metabolism And Excretion Of Chlorine Chloride, John Thomas Mccloskey
Studies On The Metabolism And Excretion Of Chlorine Chloride, John Thomas Mccloskey
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The organic base choline is of considerable interest to the physiologist because of its role in normal metabolic function, and to the pharmacologist because of its possible application in the treatment of several human diseases.
The overall function of choline in the biologic system must be seen as an equilibrium between its lipotropic activity as a whole molecule and its function as a source of methyl groups in biochemical reactions.
IV. Investigation Undertaken in This Study
Due to the long-standing and as yet unresolved question dealing with the relative merits of the path by which choline leaves the intestine, these …

A Study Of Several Factors Incident To The Absorption Of Choline From The Small Intestine Of The Albino Rat, Ralph E. Purdy
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The substance choline, one of the quaternary nitrogen bases, has been the subject of a number of reviews and investigations. It has been described as a cholinergic agent, an inotropic agent, a vitamin, and perhaps in other ways. In spite of the interest shown in its action and uses, there is as yet very little information available as to the mechanism by which it is absorbed by the intestinal mucosa.
The studies referred to thus far leave the field open for additional investigation. No mention was found in the literature of studies on selective areas of absorption of choline in …

Seasonal Thermal Acclimation In A Population Of Iguanid Lizards (Sceloporous O. Occidentalis, Baird And Girard, 1852), Charles Stetson Greene
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Within the few years following the publications of the first studies on reptilian thermoregulation (Mosauer, 1936; Attsatt, 1939; Cowles and Bogert, 1944; and Strelnidov, 1944) there has been an increasing number of investigations concerned with the mechanisms that underlie this phenomenon. Many studies have demonstrated that heliothermic lizards maintain a relatively constant body temperature during per- iods of diurnal and seasonal activity. Much of this regulation is dependent upon behavior. An extensive review of thermoregulation in both lizards and snakes has been compiled by St. Girons and St. Girona (1956).
